Stephen Colbert joins Critical Role for Red Nose Day charity stream tonight

Stephen Colbert joins Critical Role for Red Nose Day charity stream tonight

Critical role will be joined tonight by The Late Show host Stephen Colbert in a charity stream to support Red Nose Day.

The adventure will premiere live on Critical Role’s YouTube and Twitch channels at 10 p.m. EDT. You can also watch it on YouTube on Friday at noon EDT.

Matthew Mercer will be the Game Master and guide Colbert, Ashley Johnson, MarishaRay, and Sam Riegel through this campaign. Johnson, Ray, and Riegel will be reprising their Mighty Nein characters Yasha, Beau, and Nott, all at level 5.

Colbert’s character’s fate has to some extent already been decided by fans making donation-based votes. He will have a bee that travels with him; the bee will be called Eric the 2nd, and be following in his father’s footsteps. He will be able to cast Polymorph once during the adventure, regardless of his class and level. He needs to recover his dignity that has somehow been taken from him. He will begin his journey with an instrument that is living and can despise violence.

Red Nose Day is a fundraising campaign dedicated to ending child poverty and ensuring a healthy future for all children. Since 2019, the Critical Role Foundation has raised around $790K for Red Nose day, including from its first collaboration with Colbert in 2019. The 2022 campaign has raised $115K even before the airing of the Colbert adventure.

You can find out more and donate at the Critical Role Foundation’s campaign page.

Nvidia GeForce Now app adds native support for Apple M1 Macs just in time for Lost Ark arrival

Nvidia GeForce Now app adds native support for Apple M1 Macs just in time for Lost Ark arrival

After adding support for the M1 through Rosetta last year, Nvidia has just announced that its GeForce Now cloud gaming service is picking up native support for M1 Macs through its latest app update.

Rolling out now, the GeForce Now app for macOS is adding official native support for the Apple M1 chip. Although support was available via Apple’s Rosetta compatibility layer from February last year, native support will improve overall performance for Apple’s new Macs. Nvidia touts lower power consumption and faster app launch speeds with this update.

To get these benefits of the new native M1 support, you’ll need to have the latest version of the GeForce Now app, v2.0.40. You can download the GeForce Now app directly from Nvidia’s website, or check for updates if you already have it installed.

The newest update to the cloud enables the GeForce NOW macOS app to natively support the Apple M1 chip. This update provides lower power consumption, faster app startup times and an overall elevated GeForce NOW experience on M1-based MacBooks, iMacs and Mac Minis.

This update comes just as GeForce Now is adding support for Amazon’s hit Lost Ark game. This is especially great news for Mac owners, as Amazon doesn’t publish the game with official macOS support. Other recent additions to GeForce Now’s lineup include God of War, Dune: Spice Wars, and more.

Call of Duty anti-cheat tool Ricochet ‘cloaks’ legit players to cheaters

Call of Duty anti-cheat tool Ricochet ‘cloaks’ legit players to cheaters

Call of Duty’s newest measure to stop cheaters is quite novel. Legitimate players are made inaccessible to cheaters. Developers told the community of the Ricochet anti-cheat system’s new feature, called Cloaking, in a blog post on Tuesday.

” With Cloaking, cheaters can be unable to spot other players in the game’s world.” Team Ricochet stated. “Characters, bullets, even sound from legitimate players will be undetectable to cheaters.”

Legitimate players, however, can still see and attack cheaters. “Generally, they’ll be the players you see spinning in circles hollering, ‘Who is shooting me?'” Team Ricochet wrote. Fair players are encouraged to “dole out in-game punishment.”

Ricochet is a kernel-level (meaning, very high-level access to software and applications installed on a PC) anti-cheat system that rolled out in Call of Duty: Warzone and Call of Duty: Vanguard‘s multiplayer when the latter launched in November. Ricochet is on the watch for applications that attempt to interact with or manipulate the Call of Duty client.

The Verge noted that, although Team Ricochet has announced Cloaking only now, it or some form of it has been seen in-game since at least mid-February.

RICOCHET seems to have another trick up it’s sleeve to combat cheaters in #Warzone

The anticheat appears to be making “legit” players completely invisible to confirmed cheaters as you can see in this video. pic.twitter.com/T5H53HL8Bs

— ModernWarzone (@ModernWarzone) February 19, 2022

Team Ricochet noted that Cloaking will complement another mitigation technique, Damage Shield, introduced back in February. With Damage Shield, once Ricochet detects a player is tampering with the game, it disables their ability to inflict critical damage on others while still collecting data about what they’re doing and what’s on their system.

Elsewhere Team Ricochet stated that the studios in charge of maintaining multiplayer leaderboards have begun to delete cheaters. The deletion comes after “any security enforcement that results in a ban to a player.”

The team also reported that, since March 18 (when they reported that 90,000 cheaters had been banned that week), another 54,000 have have their accounts removed. “While we may not announce all bans as they happen, know they occur both daily and in waves,” Team Ricochet said.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max taller displays and notch replacement corroborated in leaked panels

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max taller displays and notch replacement corroborated in leaked panels

In March, 9to5Mac exclusively reported that Apple was planning four iPhone 14 models without a mini version. The Pro models will have a larger screen thanks to the new punch hole + pill design that replaces the notch. Now, it seems the iPhone 14 panels’ lineup has leaked.

According to content creator Saran Byte, the iPhone 14 front panels have leaked on Weibo and show the aspect ratio is “slightly different on the Pros (19:5:9 to 20:9),” corroborating with our previous report.

Here’s what 9to5Mac Filipe Esposito wrote back in March:

Early iPhone 14 rumors suggested that Apple’s smartphone lineup in 2022 will have four new models but this time without a “mini” version. According to our sources, the new iPhone 14 (codenamed D27 and D28) will be available in 6. 1-inch and 6. 7-inch versions, and the current 5. 4-inch iPhone mini form-factor will be discontinued.

These mid-range phones will have the same display resolution as the current iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. However, the display on the flagships iPhones 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max (codenamed D73 and D74) may be slightly taller to accommodate the new “notch + pill” design that will replace the notch.

iPhone 14 Pro front panels

As you can see in the image above, these are the four front panels of the upcoming iPhone 14 series. Although we can’t say for sure Apple will call the bigger iPhone 14 “Max,” our sources do believe it will have the same 6. 7-inch display as the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Earlier today, 9to5Mac reported on the iPhone 14 mockups, which give us a nice look at whether the iPhone 13 cases will work on the newer generation, as you can read more about it here.

Counterpoint: Honor is taking Huawei’s spot in China

Counterpoint: Honor is taking Huawei’s spot in China

74. 2 million smartphones were shipped in China in the first three months of 2022, down 14% compared to the same period last year. These levels are similar to the worst that the market saw during the pandemic, indeed the new wave and related lockdowns had a negative effect.

vivo edged out sibling Oppo to regain its #1 spot in the market, even though it declined to 19. 7% market share. The selfie-focused vivo S12 and S12 Pro mid-rangers and the affordable Y-series phones (e.g. Y76s, Y31s) are credited for the company’s strong performance by the analysts at Counterpoint Research.

Oppo was affected worse than vivo and its share slipped to 18%, putting it in second place, just ahead of Apple, which rose to 17.9%. The iPhone 13 was the best-selling phone in China for the quarter, even though demand for the 13 series cooled off after launch. Apple was one of Huawei’s biggest losers.

Counterpoint: Honor is taking Huawei's spot in China

It didn’t gain as much as Honor, though, which shot up from a lowly 5% share to 17% share. The popularity of the Honor 60, 60 Pro and 60 SE helped the company grow not only year over year, but also compared to Q4 2021 (when it sat at 16. 7% share). Huawei tumbled from 15% to 6.2%.

Apple’s and Honor’s growth have moved them ahead of Xiaomi in 5th. The analysts still recorded strong demand for the Redmi K40 series and the Redmi Note 11 series, the cheap Redmi 9A proved popular as well. March brought the Redmi K50 series and the Redmi 10A, which are expected to do well for Xiaomi as well.

Counterpoint reports that the premium foldable devices made up less than 1% of smartphones sold in China in Q1. Limited supply of foldable display panels kept prices high, which didn’t help the situation.

PlayStation’s Golden Week sale discounts a ton of new and old games

To celebrate Japan’s Golden Week, PlayStation is hosting an extensive sale on games for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and even PlayStation 3, along with a separate — but equally sweeping — swath of discounts for games under $20.

The Golden Week sale features titles from Japanese developers, running the gamut from horror games such as The Evil Within 2 and Resident Evil 2 Remake to role-playing games like Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom and Yakuza: Like a Dragon. The Games Under $20 sale (which, honestly, has the better deals of the two promotions) features classics like Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, Civilization 6, Sleeping Dogs, and Star Wars Republic Commando. You should also know that PS Plus subscribers may get more discounts in certain cases.

Below, we’ve compiled some of our favorite games from the more than 1,000 that are on sale.

What is Rogue Legacy 2’s FMF Fan trait?

What is Rogue Legacy 2’s FMF Fan trait?

Cellar Door Games finally released Rogue Legacy 2 from early access on Thursday, and fans have discovered an Easter egg for the developer’s other title, Full Metal Furies, in the list of potential traits.

In Rogue Legacy 2, like the first, players start each roguelite run by choosing an heir, which comes complete with a class, a spell, and a list of traits. These traits can be silly and make your character appear like a clown, or give them blue skin. Other traits mean they start with a bonus Relic, which offers powerful effects. There are other traits that can make it more difficult, such as increasing the size of your character or making the game easier.

However, the “FMF Fan” trait gives bonus gold and no downside. There is no effect. It simply states “You are good at taste.” You’re probably Korean,” and then gives you 25% bonus gold for that run.

A representative of Cellar Door Games explained to Polygon :

why the trait states “you’re probably Korean”.

“[Full Metal Furies] didn’t perform particularly well in the United States or Europe despite positive reviews, but found a huge following in Korea. So much so that the studio regularly receives huge amounts of fan mail, gifts and treats from its Korean player base. A large amount of these they still hang in the studio, and this Easter egg was a big thank you to them.”

It’s uncommon that Rogue Legacy 2 — which can be quite punishing in places — gives you something for nothing. Cellar Door Games decided to honor its legacy and give players a gold boost.

So if you come along the FMF Fan trait in your playthrough, don’t fear and enjoy the free gold. Just make sure you spare a thought for Full Metal Furies once you finish your run.

Update: Cellar Door Games responded to our request for comment around the meaning of the “You’re probably Korean” description for the trait. The quote has been added to the story.

iPhone 14 mockups show whether you’ll be able to keep using iPhone 13 cases [Video]

iPhone 14 mockups show whether you’ll be able to keep using iPhone 13 cases [Video]

The iPhone 14 lineup is coming in less than six months, and reports so far have painted a pretty clear of what to expect. As we inch closer to that release, iPhone 14 dummy units and molds are starting to emerge out of Apple’s supply chain. The latest leaked iPhone 14 designs were published this week by Mac Otakara, and they offer a closer look at whether or not your iPhone 13 cases will fit the new iPhone 14 lineup.

iPhone 14 cases and leaks

As a refresher, the iPhone 14 lineup is expected to consist of four models across two different screen sizes at 6. 1-inches and 6.7-inches. This would include an iPhone 14, an iPhone 14 Max, an iPhone 14 Pro, and an iPhone 14 Pro Max.

These new dummy units and models published by Mac Otakara this week further corroborate these expectations and offer a closer look at the design changes we can expect. The most interesting tidbit here is that this is the first time we’ve seen tests on whether or not iPhone 13 cases will fit the new iPhone 14.

Given that the 6. 1-inch screen size of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro is the same as iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, one would assume that cases would be inter-compatible. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. A video from Mac Otakara shows that, somewhat unsurprisingly, the camera bump will be the issue.

As you can see in the video below, the larger camera bump on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro means that cases designed for the iPhone 13 won’t fit the new devices. There is some awkwardness about the camera bumps, but Apple has also increased the device’s thickness to make room for the larger bump. Even if the imperfections in the fitting of the camera bump are not a problem, this thickness change will mean that the cases won’t fit physically.

Meanwhile, as for the larger iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max, these dummy units show that cases designed for the iPhone 13 Pro Max should roughly fit both of the iPhone 14 models. Camera bump is again the problem. The report explains that “the case itself could be installed, but it could not be completely installed because the rear camera hole interfered.”

You can check out the full video below, which shows the process of trying to install the iPhone 13 cases on each iPhone 14 model. You can learn more about the iPhone 14 in our full guide.

Ex-Sonic Team lead Yuji Naka apologizes for “unfinished” Balan Wonderworld

Ex-Sonic Team lead Yuji Naka apologizes for “unfinished” Balan Wonderworld

Yuji Naka, the former head of Sonic Team at Sega and the director of the disastrous musical platformer Balan Wonderworld, says he was removed from that game’s development six months before its completion, and that he sued publisher Square Enix over that decision. Naka claimed that his case in court is over, and that he no longer has to follow company guidelines. However, he did not reveal the resolution.

In a lengthy Twitter thread posted Thursday, Naka apologized to fans who bought Balan Wonderworld, which he described as “unfinished,” according to a translation of Naka’s comments.

According to Naka, he was removed as director of Balan Wonderworld by the game’s producer, head of marketing, head of sound, managing director, and human resources department for two reasons. One issue that caused conflict during development, Naka said, citing court documents, was a promotion that used a YouTuber’s piano arrangement of music from Balan Wonderworld, instead of the original composition. Naka said he insisted that the original be released. Arzest was the game’s creator. The second problem involved a dispute with Naka over the game’s quality. Naka claimed that he had made suggestions to Arzest regarding improvements to Balan Wonderworld and bugs fixes, which led to an “endangered” relationship between Arzest and Naka.

Naka also apologized for not interfacing with fans on social media. Square Enix had restricted him from doing so. He said he believes that Square Enix does not value game fans or games themselves, based on his experience developing Balan Wonderworld.

Citing his work in the original Sonic the Hedgehog , Naka recalled that the game had been changed two weeks prior to its completion. This was so Sonic could fight if he still had one ring. Naka said this design choice was the result of improving the game’s design until the very end, and that he wasn’t afforded a similar opportunity as director of Balan Wonderworld. He said he ultimately involved a lawyer to negotiate with Square Enix on changes to the game, but was refused and filed suit.

Polygon reached out to Square Enix about Naka’s comments. We will keep you updated when Square Enix responds.

Balan Wonderworld was announced in July 2020 as a new game from Sonic the Hedgehog and Nights Into Dreams creators Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima, the designer of Sonic and founder of Arzest. Balan Wonderworld was released on multiple platforms in March 2021, and was a critical and commercial flop. Naka said he left Square Enix just a few months later, and floated the idea of retiring from the games industry.
