Could the iPhone 14 lineup mark the return of the ‘Plus’ branding?

Could the iPhone 14 lineup mark the return of the ‘Plus’ branding?

As we’ve covered a number of times already, expectations for the iPhone 14 lineup are pretty clear. Apple is likely to unveil four different iPhone 14 models across two screen sizes at 6. 1-inches and 6.7-inches.

While Apple (usually) does a great job at keeping marketing names under wraps until a product is announced, it’s fun to speculate ahead of time. Something I’ve been pondering recently is whether the iPhone 14 lineup could mark the return of the “Plus” branding…

The iPhone 14 lineup is likely to consist of two 6. 1-inch iPhone models, one of which will be branded as a “Pro” model and the other one being the “entry-level” model. This is unsurprising and is the exact strategy Apple used with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.

But where things are expected to differ is with the 6. 7-inch iPhone models. At the high-end of the lineup will be the iPhone 14 Pro Max, again repeating the strategy used with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. For the first time, however, Apple is also expected to introduce an iPhone with a 6. 7-inch display that is not branded as a “Pro” model.

What this means is that the iPhone 14 will be available in two different screen sizes across four different price points. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that the non-Pro version of the 6. 7-inch iPhone 14 could be priced at around $900, making it the most affordable 6. 7-inch iPhone ever released by Apple.

Loosely looking at current iPhone prices, that means the iPhone 14 lineup could look like this:

  • $799 iPhone 14
  • $899 iPhone 14 Max
  • $999 iPhone 14 Pro
  • $1099 iPhone 14 Pro Max

iPhone 14 Plus?

But my proposal and idea for Apple’s crack marketing team is this. Instead of using the “iPhone 14 Max” name, let’s bring back the “Plus” and call it the iPhone 14 Plus.

  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max

Having two versions of the iPhone 14 with “Max” tacked on the end could prove to be confusing for consumers. Apple’s “Plus” branding was also very popular in the past. The iPhone 6 Plus, for instance, is one of the best selling iPhones of all-time.

The iPhone 14 lineup is actually looking like an extension of Apple’s iPhone 6 strategy of attempting to bring a large screen to as low of a price point as possible. If the iPhone 6 Plus success serves as any indication, the iPhone 14 Plus could be one of the most popular iPhone models in recent years.

Again, this is all just conjecture at this point and Apple does a great job at keeping iPhone branding under wraps until officially announcing the new devices. Apple’s marketing names are notoriously difficult to predict, so it is possible that Apple will do something surprising this year. Drop the numbers all together? Go with the “iPhone 13S” instead? It’s anyone’s guess.

What are your thoughts on marketing names for this year’s iPhone 14 lineup? Give us your best guesses down in the comments.

Peacock adds 4 million paid subscribers, up 40% since last quarter

Peacock adds 4 million paid subscribers, up 40% since last quarter

Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, which owns the Peacock streaming service, has reported its Q1 2022 earnings. In today’s earnings report, Peacock’s paid subscriber count is up 4 million subscribers, up 40% since the end of 2021. Of the 28 million current subscribers, 13 million are paying subscribers, up 9 million from last quarter.

In its conference call, Comcast CEO and Chair Brian Roberts stated the streaming platform has seen a 25% increase in engagement year over year. However, the company doesn’t expect this sort of growth to continue.

We expect more modest subscriber gains until we get to the back half of this year. We expect a great fourth quarter with exciting sporting events like Sunday Night Football and Premier League.

This year’s streaming platform has made some improvements to the service. On Sundays in May, Peacock will stream 18 Major League Baseball games. Apple TV+ also has MLB games added to their lineup. This is a result of sports being a popular content type that viewers want to watch on streaming platforms like Apple TV+. Additionally, NBC shows will become exclusive to the platform this fall, leaving Hulu.

The news of this growth also comes after Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers this quarter. One reason for slow growth was competition from other streaming services. With competitors adding live sports to their lineups, should Netflix do the same to revive itself?

Yesterday’s news about

Comcast and its partnership with Charter was also reported. The two cable giants are banding together to create a new streaming platform on 4K devices and smart TVs.

Circuit Garden offers purely analog electronic sounds that mimic nature

Circuit Garden offers purely analog electronic sounds that mimic nature

Kelly Heaton Circuit Garden Machine Intelligence

Synthesizers serve several purposes, including allowing a person to compose music. Although it is electronic music others may not consider to be music, many notes can create a lovely melody. The “Circuit Garden” by Kelly Heaton is a project that will make us think about nature and enjoy the electronic culture.

What you will hear are birds chirping repeatedly. In addition, there are different shapes of birds singing other tunes. The chirping isn’t annoying it offers a relaxing mood–that is if you are into stress relief music.

Designer: Kelly Heaton

The Circuit Garden shows off machine intelligence combined with human nature. The bird-shaped boards are not the only circuit items. Other shapes are mimicking different animal behaviors and sounds. You will hear more than just birdsong. There are also chirping crickets.

Kelly Heaton Circuit Garden Design

Kelly Heaton Circuit Garden Sample

The designer has created analog electronic designs that generate realistic sounds. What you hear are not real birds. They are not even actual recordings as everything is electronic. These are just electric vibrations from artificial origin.

Kelly Heaton hopes to encourage more people and more discussion about nature, as well as electronic culture. Electronic hardware is the focus of this designer. She wants to go basic with the circuits as they are what allow digital media to happen.

Kelly Heaton Circuit Garden Details

Kelly Heaton Circuit Garden Concept

Heaton thought in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration as she learned from Nikola Tesla. She says her unique art explores different concepts while allowing those circuits to vibrate in natural patterns. Heaton explains that the “Circuit Garden pays homage to electrical oscillation, specifically the astable multivibrator, which is my favorite method for generating life-like waveforms.”

Heaton describes her work also as printed circuit birds. They are self-contained sound generators and are purely analog. There are no software or no audio recordings used here.

Kelly Heaton Circuit Garden Demo

Kelly Heaton Circuit Garden Synthesizer

The Circuit Garden is like a collection of synthesizers producing almost natural sounds of birds and other insects. To change the quality of a song or sound, resistance in the circuit is adjusted. Designer is showing us the beautiful analog hardware that can be achieved. It is still possible to explore the category of creative electronics. We know it’s just there, but it takes a lot of effort to preserve the art.

There are many synthesizers that can produce stunning electronic music. We have a few favorites here including those by Love Hulten: the foldable synthesizer, the EC1, and the TE-LAB. We realize we’ll never live without music or sound effects that’s why we value these synthesizers.

Warframe’s new quest cracks open a galaxy full of weird, wild lore

Warframe’s new quest cracks open a galaxy full of weird, wild lore

With a decade’s worth of content to explore, Warframe can be intimidating, especially for those who are just starting out. Players who can put up with the high-octane space-mech killing gameplay and ninja flipping will discover one of the best plots in gaming. The game recently concluded a long-running, highly dramatic plot centered around the Lotus, players’ collective Space Mom. And with Wednesday’s new update, Angels of the Zariman, developer Digital Extremes has opened a new act for a universe that has grown to rival canons like Warhammer 40K.

The world of Warframe takes place in the Origin System — a far-future, very sci-fi version of our Sol system — after the fall of the gilded Orokin Empire. You play the part of an Operator for the Warframes. This is a mecha-organic killing machine that protects innocents against supersoldiers and space hypercapitalists. Warframe also keeps a major part of its core premise secret until about 25 hours in — and the community carefully guards that spoiler from new players.

Warframe - The Lotus from Warframe

Image: Digital Extremes

“Our biggest failure rate is how do you get a player from finishing the tutorial to The Second Dream?” community and live operations director Rebecca Ford said in a call with Polygon. “That’s the minefield of ‘Oh, god, will someone make it through’ for us, so that needs some patchwork repair — this update does a pretty good job at removing unnecessary obstacles, but it’s clear to us that getting someone there is what makes them actually like or love Warframe.”

For years, the focus of the game has been on the relationship between the player and the mysterious, maternal Lotus. Ford happens to be the voice behind this character. Now that The New War expansion has resolved that story, Angels of the Zariman is set to crack into several of the other weird, wild parts of the Warframe universe.

And for the uninitiated, Warframe truly does get bizarre, going to places where other games are afraid to tread. You will be accompanied by a group of social revolutionaries on Venus, who use robot bodies and labor to pay off their debt. This quest zone is a major one. A second hub centers around family drama. Except that the family is actually a group of scientists who have been consumed by an alternate reality. This is a bit more complex than the killing of eight boars in a wooded area.

“We make [our characters] as human as possible, under a wrapping paper that feels like it’s on space LSD,” said Ford.

Angels of the Zariman was created to celebrate the victory of The New War but also give us a new start. It’s an exciting transition for the writers team. Ford stated that it was a creative exercise, and also served an audience who has placed more trust in Ford than they might have put in themselves. “As a creator, you’re always questioning your decisions, like ‘is this the right choice?’ But when you have an audience to reinforce things, it makes it a much less lonesome feeling.”

As the release to Angels of the Zariman approached, Digital Extremes’ communications have been “hijacked” by a mysterious figure, and fans are already speculating as to who this could be — and dreaming of how they might be able to befriend him, like we have with many of the other NPCs in the game. Even players who aren’t into the nitty-gritty endgame are banding together to solve Zariman-related ARGs and to wildly speculate on plot ramifications. The players are also taking time to send Signal-Chan, a mysterious character that they have created together with others characters like AI Cephalon Cy, the traumatized spaceship AI Cephalon Cy. (Listen, it’s not as weird as it sounds in a setting like Warframe. )

As for what’s next: We may have seen hints of that in the past, specifically in the 2019 TennoCon trailer for the Duviri Paradox, which showed an older Operator wandering through a realm outside of time and reality. Ford stated that players would be well advised to examine every part of the update in order to discover what possible paradoxes might be created. “We’re very committed to blowing your mind with logic … which won’t make much sense until it happens. There’s one or two details in this update that will serve as a foundation for Duviri. You can find interesting things if you look hard

Samsung Galaxy M51 starts receiving Android 12

Samsung Galaxy M51 starts receiving Android 12

The Samsung Galaxy M51 was long overdue to get Google’s latest OS, but, on the other hand, this is almost a two-year-old mid-range handset, so kudos to Samsung for pushing a second major update.

Samsung Galaxy M51 starts receiving Android 12

Anyway, the handset is reportedly getting Android 12 in Russia with build number M515FXXU4DVD1 and it will likely hit other markets pretty soon. This is how updates are usually distributed by the company.

It’s worth noting that this is pretty much the end of the road for the Galaxy M51 in terms of major firmware updates. The device won’t be getting Android 13, although it will continue to receive essential monthly security patches from Google for another year.

How to deal 100 damage with one bullet in Fortnite

How to deal 100 damage with one bullet in Fortnite

One of the Week 6 quests for Chapter 3 Season 2 in Fortnite‘s Battle Royale mode requires you to “deal 100 damage or more to an opponent with one bullet.” To do this, you’ll need some specific guns, as the majority of weapons are completely incapable of doing that much damage. Our Fortnite weekly quest guide explains how to deal 100 damage with one bullet easily.

The easiest way to accomplish the task is to use a sniper rifle or specific shotguns. Any of these :

can be used.

  • Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle
  • Heavy Sniper Rifle
  • Hunter Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle
  • Storm Scout (Exotic, purchased from The Foundation in Sanctuary)
  • Ranger Shotgun
  • Striker Pump Shotgun

For most of these, you’ll need to land a headshot to actually do 100 damage. But the higher the rarity, the more damage the gun does — so if you use a Legendary Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle, it will deal over 100 damage with one bullet, even if it’s a body shot.

We recommend using a Heavy Sniper Rifle or Ranger Shotgun (which both deal over 100 damage on their own, without the need for a headshot or high-rarity version). However, if you can’t find one, you can upgrade a Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle to Legendary status at a workbench.

If you’re going with the lower-rarity headshot method, IO Guards make for easy targets. We recommend hunting them down in Command Cavern or The Fortress.

Once you complete this quest, you’ll get 20,000 XP, which should help you boost up your battle pass level substantially.

Call of Duty 2022 announced: Modern Warfare 2 gets title, logo

Call of Duty 2022 announced: Modern Warfare 2 gets title, logo

Call of Duty returns to Modern Warfare in 2022, developer Infinity Ward and Activision confirmed Thursday in tweets that showed the logo and the title of the next game in the series, which appears to be, simply, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This year’s entry in the enduring shooter franchise is expected to arrive on consoles and PC sometime later this year.

On Twitter, the game’s official account teased “the new era of Call of Duty is coming,” and posted a brief teaser video. That video offers little more than an aesthetic tease, but very briefly shows the logo for Task Force 141, the international spec ops unit that served as the principal protagonists of the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 released in 2009.

(This year’s game may technically be titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, in an attempt to differentiate it from the other game that bears that name, based on the above logo. The Call of Duty: Black Ops games have used Roman numerals for sequels, including the unusual Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII. )

The next Call of Duty is a direct sequel to 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward’s reboot of the sub-brand that started in 2007 with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The 2019 Modern Warfare has been the most successful Call of Duty title to date, Activision has said.

Activision has reportedly shown the new Modern Warfare 2 privately this week to NFL draft prospects in Las Vegas, and is expected to show the game more widely soon.

A new premium Call of Duty game isn’t the only shooter Activision has planned for the property this year; a new Warzone game, a “built from the ground-up,” free-to-play shooter with battle royale elements, is also coming in 2022. The original Call of Duty: Warzone was released in March 2020, and was part of the previous Modern Warfare‘s season 2 content. Since then, Activision and developer Raven Software have updated Warzone with content from Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War and Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Meta Store to offer hands-on experience of the metaverse and actual hardware

Meta Store Portal-Store

Don’t be confused here, but while Meta wants to enhance the virtual and augmented realities with the Metaverse, the company is also taking it to the real world. Next month, a retail store is about to open its doors in Burlingame, California.

The physical Meta Store is launching on May 9. It is a retail space where you can check out some of the products available. You can try out the Meta Quest 2, Ray-Ban Stories, or the Meta Portal. The store allows a hands-on experience of the items on sale.

Designer: Meta

Meta Store Meta Quest Demo

The Meta Store offers interactive demos like making video calls on the Meta Portal. The Meta Quest 2 demo is immersive with VR. Test yourself how the Ray-Ban Stories can help you be present with the world around you. The pair can help you capture those special memories and share them easily. You can choose from many styles, colors and lenses.

The Meta team simply wants people to get a hold of and feel a product first before purchasing–like in the old days. Before you can decide if the Meta experience is for you, it’s important to interact with all of them. This is a great move considering the current pandemic. Meta is mainly a digital company too, so going into the real world is deemed unnecessary. But then again, other tech giants like Microsoft and Google also have their physical stores.

Meta Store Portal Opening

Head of Meta Store Martin Gilliard said, “Once people experience the technology, they can gain a better appreciation for it. If we did our job right, people should leave and tell their friends, ‘You’ve got to go check out the Meta Store.'”

There is a Meta Quest 2 display wall at the Meta Store. It is quite interactive as you can try the hardware, accessories, and content ready. You can also experience games like Supernatural and Real VR Fishing. You can test these apps on an LED wall-to-wall display. The Meta Store will even provide you with a 30-second mixed reality video of your experience that you can share on social media.

Meta Store Hardware Hands-on Experience

The Meta Store is set in a 1,550 square feet area. The Burlingame store is near the Reality Labs HQ. Meta has added an additional Shop tab to meta.com, where all hardware products can be purchased online.

The Meta Store will open on May 9. It will be ready to accept visitors from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM PT, Monday to Friday only. The store is located at 322 Airport Blvd in Burlingame, California.

Tips and tricks for Rogue Legacy 2 beginners

Tips and tricks for Rogue Legacy 2 beginners

In Rogue Legacy 2, you, your heirs, and your heirs’ heirs are all given the opportunity to die by the hands of monsters in a quest for gold and glory — as nature always intended. Now that the roguelite is moving out of early access, we have a few new (and updated) tips to set you on your way. Onward to death(s)!

To save or spend?

After your first run, each new run begins with handing over whatever gold you have left over after upgrades to Charon as he ferries you back to the castle. After hitting level 12 you can unlock The Living Safe that allows you to stash away 10% of your leftovers before you hop back into Charon’s boat. This may lessen the sting of his price a bit — but 90% of that sting is still there!

Try to use as much gold as possible on castle, weapon, or rune upgrades first before paying off Big C — even if that means making a lesser upgrade before the one you really want. Your chances of having a successful future are higher, as most of your gold will soon be gone, so it’s worth trying to get the best bang for your dollar. And remember that Charon is happy to accept zero gold if that’s all you have.

Unlock Health upgrades and Classes first

Very early in Rogue Legacy 2, your primary focus should just be snagging as much gold as you can in your first few unforgiving runs. You’ll start to unlock new perks as you build your castle, but for now keep your focus on upgrading your health and unlocking new classes as soon as you can.

Rogue Legacy 2 screenshot showing the castle upgrade screen and the mess hall that increases max HP

The Mess Hall increases your max HP.
Image: Cellar Door Games via Polygon

You may find another class that is a far better fit for you than the starting Knight, and having a larger health bar will buy you some time to experiment with your character’s abilities. Try out classes with more range like the Ranger or versatility in attack direction like the Valkyrie. You might be shocked by how much you enjoy playing as a lowly Cook and his surprisingly useful frying pan.

After that, take a look at unlocking the various NPCs that you can interact with on the dock, like the Blacksmith and Enchantress. Once those characters are available, you’ll need to start paying attention to other attributes — like equipment and rune weights or your level of resolve — but there’s no need to worry about them early on when they won’t even apply to your runs. …

Learn to use the Architect

One of the characters you’ll unlock as you expand your castle is the Architect, an older gentleman who’ll join you on the dock. The Architect has the ability to lock the dungeon rooms in place as you last encountered them … for a price.

Rogue Legacy 2 screenshot showing the player interacting with the Architect on the docks.

The Architect locks dungeon rooms in place between runs.
Image: Cellar Door Games via Polygon

This can be extremely useful, especially if you’ve discovered a boss or a challenge and want to take a run at with a fresh character. If you only made it to an Estuary with your last sliver of life left, have the Architect lock the world into place and then transport directly to your goal instead of starting over from scratch. Just don’t expect to hold onto too much gold if you need to use him more than once or twice in a row. He won’t be able to keep his prices down for very long.

Keep an eye out for secrets

It’s important to take the time and be thorough in all rooms, no matter how difficult they may appear. After clearing out the space, make sure to check for cracks or holes in walls.

Rogue Legacy 2 screenshot showing the player, in silhouette, entering a secret area through a crack in the wall.

Look for cracks in the walls to find secret areas.
Image: Cellar Door Games via Polygon

If you come across these areas, use Magic to blast your way in and claim your treasure! It’s not a common reward, but it is a good way to be rewarded for looking for the details. You’ll usually be caught up with larger goals, but five extra seconds in a room might net you a few hundred extra gold!

Therefore …

All that glitters is not gold

When choosing your heir, you’ll be faced with a variety of randomly generated options — their class, spells, talents, and any other randomized heirlooms that will come along with them. That may also include traits that can handicap your run with the tradeoff of a higher percentage of gold collected.

Rogue Legacy 2 screenshot showing the heir screen with a list of each heir’s traits.

Selecting your heir.
Image: Cellar Door Games via Polygon

Stick with the 25-50% bonuses. These traits are often not annoying, and sometimes can be quite funny. Once you start seeing 100-200% percent bonuses, though, you’ll be wasting a run unless you’re at the absolute top of your game.

That being said, sometimes the laughs that Rogue Legacy 2 provides are worth it, and you just need to see what your Myopic, Colorblind, one-hit-kill Mage is really capable of!

Challenge yourself

There are two challenges that you’ll come across early in the game — the chance to gain either Ananke’s Shawl or Aesop’s Tome — and you should definitely try to conquer these as soon as you can.

Rogue Legacy 2 screenshot showing the player approaching a statue where you can start the Aesop’s Tome challenge

The challenge to claim Aesop’s Tome.
Image: Cellar Door Games via Polygon

The Shawl is particularly useful, as it allows you to use your dash maneuver in the air as well as on the ground, giving you more options in battle, as well as opening up parts of rooms that might otherwise be inaccessible.

The Tome allows you to access tips from the glowing blue orbs and other helpful spirits you see scattered around the world. But, to be totally honest, there don’t seem to be many “puzzles” early on that are so confounding that you won’t be able to crack them on your own.

Bonus Tip: Smash everything!! (Except the things you shouldn’t! )

Almost everything — chairs, tables, books, lanterns, chairs, candles, and (obviously) enemies — is smashable in Rogue Legacy 2, and there’s a good chance it’ll give you a coin or two when you destroy it. You shouldn’t destroy all lanterns and crates in rooms that appear to have only lanterns. At least not until after you take a look as to what they might be making accessible to you when you jump on top of them.
