A new, free, fan-made card game, Pocket Crystal League<\/em><\/a>, melds two of our favorite things: Pok\u00e9mon\u2019s creatures and storytelling, and the deck-building game from Inscryption<\/em>, Polygon\u2019s 2021 game of the year. <\/em>Specifically, the card game\u2019s mechanics derive from the first portion of Inscryption<\/em> that takes place inside Leshy\u2019s cabin.<\/p>\n

Pocket Crystal League<\/em> creator moodytail calls the Pok\u00e9-card game \u201cpretty straightforward and easy to learn,\u201d and notes that it is \u201ccompletely different to the Official Trading Card Game.\u201d In other words, no Pok\u00e9mon TCG experience required.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a nifty marriage of two concepts. Like Inscryption<\/em>, Pocket Crystal League<\/em>\u2019s virtual game table has a row where cards can be placed, in order to attack enemy cards. But instead of the horror puzzle\u2019s games stoat and wolves, these cards have gen 1 and gen 2 Pok\u00e9mon on them. From the opening of Pocket Crystal League<\/em>, the game prompts players to select a Grass, Fire or Water deck \u2014 and each of them have type advantages against enemy Pok\u00e9mon cards.<\/p>\n

Like Inscryption, <\/em>laying down an offense card requires paying a cost. But instead of squirrels, Pocket Crystal League <\/em>fittingly has players spend Oran Berries. (Other berry types unlock as the player moves along.) As the player advances, they unlock additional Pok\u00e9mon, and create the optimal deck. And rather than fighting across several of Leshy\u2019s maps, Pocket Crystal League<\/em> will have players advancing in a more a Pok\u00e9-inspired path:<\/p>\n

After choosing a starter deck, your goal is to travel through Kyoumu, challenging each of the Gym Leaders from the eight major cities in the region, building up your team to reach the ultimate goal, the Crystal League. Along the way, you\u2019ll be presented with numerous choices to expand your deck, strengthen your cards, give them unique special abilities, and battle other trainers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Pok\u00e9mon aesthetics of the game are adorable and nostalgic \u2014 a nice nod to some classic Game Boy games \u2014 from the upbeat musical track to the pixelated visuals. Pocket Crystal League<\/em> is free to download on <\/a>Itch.io<\/a> and is playable on Windows PC. \u201cThis project was done ultimately just for fun, and I\u2019m not getting any kind of revenue or payment from it,\u201d moodytail says, \u201cplease Nintendo, let it be!\u201d<\/p>\n
