It\u2019s simple enough to snicker at the 12-frames-per-second animation of the 1980s, and the cynical narratives that the decade\u2019s syndicated cartoons spun to sell <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lkQE5wuBFeY\"><em>Jem and the Holograms<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>dolls or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pn49zxXRHhA\"><em>Centurions<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>playsets to kids coming home from school. But making that look and feel come home to someone playing a video game, as if it were a cartoon come to life, would take a <em>lot <\/em>of work. They\u2019d have to work <em>against <\/em>the engine they\u2019d be using to build the game, even.<\/p>\n<p  >It was worth it, Eric Booker and Luke Rideout said. Their boss, Trent Oster, wasn\u2019t sure. <\/p>\n<p >\u201cYou\u2019re telling me,\u201d Oster said, summarizing a conversation with Booker and Rideout, \u201cthat you want to take Unreal \u2014 which is really good at doing photo-real stuff, and lighting, and all this awesome stuff \u2014 and you want to turn all that lighting off, and put a bunch of effort into making it look how it\u2019s not supposed to look?\u201d<\/p>\n<p >The look, of course, is what makes <em>MythForce<\/em>, which launched April 20 in early access on the Epic Games Store for Windows PC. In gameplay, yes, it\u2019s a lively, first-person hack-and-slash adventure where players level up a team of characters with loot and XP from procedurally generated dungeons. In look and sound, <em>MythForce <\/em>players are plundering a world of pure 1980s syndicated UHF cartoon nostalgia. All it\u2019s missing is a blue-screen 1-800 ad for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P3CnvphQs04\"><em>Freedom Rock<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Et7uuuGofOI?t=5\">Time Life Books<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p >\u201cMy favorite thing to watch has been when [players] first boot it up, that theme song comes on, and, like, the four or five seconds of confusion,\u201d said Beamdog artist Micah Pettibone. \u201cAnd then people just, literally, jamming to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div >\n<div >\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MythForce - Your *NEW* Favorite Old School Cartoon! (30 Minutes of Co-op Gameplay)\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S6uqBi2SBtE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p >Pettibone, by the way, wasn\u2019t even around for the awesome <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/BLZ3H9mWPmo?t=45\">How-to-Buy-Action-Figure-Man<\/a> cartoons of Reagan\u2019s deregulated decade. She\u2019s 29. But Pettibone, an environment artist for the game, was also a quick student for nailing the 1980s look. It may be a distinctive style, but it\u2019s also built on fundamentals and design processes that professional illustrators understand today.<\/p>\n<p >\u201cWhen we started with this project, we had a nice document that details, \u2018Here are some of the main rules of how they approach these scenes,\u2019\u201d Pettibone said. \u201cYou can see that this was an animation where they had less money to put into backgrounds. So these were some of the choices that defined those styles, basically. It was like, \u2018Hey, we\u2019ve got five bucks for the shot, so you\u2019re gonna do a solid color, right?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p >It\u2019s ironic that such a rich and evocative artistic style could, in fact, be described as cost-conscious. But in a way, that mentality helped Eric Booker, the art director, get the project to a point where Oster wasn\u2019t just comfortable with the pitch, he was all-in for the aesthetic, and all of the extra ways it could be expressed in the game.<\/p>\n<div >\n<section  data-c data-cdata=\"{\" routing=\"\">\n<div >\n<p>\n      <button data-ui=\"grid\"><br \/>\n        <svg role=\"img\"><use xlink:href=\"#icon-grid\"><\/use><\/svg><span>Grid View<\/span><br \/>\n      <\/button>\n    <\/p>\n<div  data-ui=\"viewer\">\n<div  data-ui=\"next-image\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<p>      <button  data-ui=\"prev-image\" aria-label=\"Previous image\"><br \/>\n        <svg role=\"img\"><use xlink:href=\"#icon-left\"><\/use><\/svg><\/button><br \/>\n      <button  data-ui=\"next-image\" aria-label=\"Next image\"><br \/>\n        <svg role=\"img\"><use xlink:href=\"#icon-right\"><\/use><\/svg><\/button>\n    <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p >\u201cI wasn\u2019t a big believer in the cartoon visuals off the start,\u201d Oster said. \u201cI used to joke about it when I worked at BioWare, it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey, talking heads, humans that look at you and move their mouths?\u2019 Yeah, that\u2019s a $10 million feature. Now, what\u2019s our feature? Everything looks like an \u201980s cartoon. That\u2019s what we\u2019re spending money on, that we could put elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p >Oster told Rideout, the creative director, and Booker, the art director, they had three months to make the concept work. \u201cAnd after three months, we were like, \u2018OK, this is <em>working<\/em>,\u2019\u201d Oster said. \u201c\u2018And this is working really well. And it\u2019s blending really well with the gameplay. Let\u2019s do this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p >By this point, Booker, working with Pettibone and character artists Diego Velasquez and Aimee Correia, had a solid conceptual foundation for <em>MythForce<\/em>\u2019s dashing heroes, smug villains, and the forbidding Castle of Evil where both sides would meet. Still, Booker needed a creative backstop to be sure that everything was going in the proper direction \u2014 that <em>MythForce<\/em>, wizards, warriors, and all \u2014 really did look like a 1980s cartoon, and Booker and his colleagues hadn\u2019t just convinced themselves it did. For that, Booker turned to a mentor, Mark Cappello, an artist with more than 25 years of experience in both traditional animation and video game development.<\/p>\n<div >\n<section  data-c cartoons that <em>MythForce <\/em>sought to emulate. He explained what they were doing to Cappello and then said, \u201cTell me where I\u2019m wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p >Booker said that Cappello came into the process and explained what the team was looking at, so they would know what to recreate in Unreal Engine 4 and what to leave out. The advice was very technical, but it worked.<\/p>\n<p >\u201cThen we had Mark, who [said] \u2018OK, line count specifically references this.\u2019 Or \u2018This is cel damage, as opposed to, like, a paint imperfection.\u2019 So, that really helped us cherry-pick the elements from a vast array of shows, and then actually get that animation-appropriate terminology that we kept throughout the There\u2019s the overhead of creating the death animations that you mentioned, but that\u2019s still a relatively high VFX cost. We have to create bespoke VFX for all of those, as opposed to what a lot of games would do, which is just to ragdoll something and have blood spatter everywhere. So at one point, we were like, \u2018Hey, we want to do an animated trailer, and a song, and everything.\u2019 And everybody was like, \u2018Yeah! Let\u2019s do it! What\u2019s it gonna cost?\u2019 I don\u2019t know! Let\u2019s figure it out! It was like, \u2018We\u2019re committed. We\u2019re making it happen.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p ><em>MythForce<\/em>\u2019s original soundtrack was composed and performed by Ross Lara of Archipelago Entertainment, in collaboration with the singer-songwriter Jeff Garrison. \u201cWe showed him references to the cartoon intros to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=crznk6ZGIIY\"><em>Thundercats<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=o2Z1yLO9C-Q\"><em>M.A.S.K.<\/em><\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SdtcK1Qs2K4\"><em>Silverhawks<\/em><\/a>, basically had him listen to those,\u201d Rideout said. \u201cAnd the two of them, together, slammed out that song in a couple of weeks, and sent it back to us with a sort of Simlish mumbling, because we didn\u2019t have the lyrics yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p >Oster admits he got a little nervous at this point, as he was \u201cpot-committed\u201d to a big, hairy song without much assurance it\u2019d resonate with the audience.<\/p>\n<p >\u201cThat Simlish version, where they came in without lyrics like, \u2018Ba-baaa, ba-da-baaaa. Ba-namanamnanaaa,\u201d I was like \u2018I don\u2019t know about this! It\u2019s an early access game, which means the developers are closely watching community reaction, particularly the streamers. Pettibone, Rideout, Oster, and Booker all seemed personally touched by the reactions their game has garnered so far. \u201cIt was one of our pillars of design: Never, never become a parody,\u201d Rideout said. \u201cThis is homage, not parody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p  >\u201cWe really wanted it to be a love letter to the \u201980s,\u201d Oster said. \u201cAnd to do that animation, and to not be a mocking, cynical thing. And I really feel we\u2019ve hit that, especially watching the streams and watching people, being in that happy, 13-year-old head space.
