This pedestrian cross-walk system uses smart technology to ensure a safe flow of traffic

Smartpass is a universal smart pedestrian cross-walk system.

The language of cross-walk signals is universal. When traveling to a new city, it can feel like such a relief knowing that you won’t have to pull out your pocket translator just to cross the street. While deciphering cross-walk signals is relatively simple, there are different road rules and forms of street etiquette that are unique to each city.

Designer: 2s.design studio

In driving cities like Los Angeles, jaywalking is generally frowned upon, but in New York, it’s an essential skill if you plan on being on time. In Poland, 2s.design studio has been at work on developing a universal smart pedestrian cross-walk system called Smartpass.

Aiming to create a cross-walk system that provides safety and comfort for all traffic participants, 2s.design studio’s Smartpass incorporates assistive features for pedestrians and vehicles that obey the cross-walk signals. When pedestrians approach the cross-walk, a central unit with built-in GSM and detection modules sends alerts to the system’s supplemental modules for pedestrians to cross safely.

Once the internal sensors detect oncoming pedestrian traffic, sound alerts are broadcasted and LED lights to illuminate to guide pedestrians to the other side of the street. Antiskid modules also trace the traffic lanes for cars to come to gradual stops as they let pedestrians walk across the street. Radar and monitoring modules detect pedestrian crossings on the streets, so cars can safely continue driving.

Designing Smartpass, 2s.design studio conducted research with the Institute of Roads and Bridges of the Warsaw University of Technology, which revealed that cross-walks can be made 30% safer by integrating smart cross-walk systems like Smartpass. The success of Smartpass in Warsaw led to the introduction of the smart system by the designers to the rest of Europe. They also hoped to open up the market to foreign manufacturers.

Report: Galaxy S22 sales falling due to the GOS scandal, carrier subsidies increased to counter

Report: Galaxy S22 sales falling due to the GOS scandal, carrier subsidies increased to counter

It seems that the GOS scandal has seriously tarnished the image of the Galaxy S22 series in South Korea. The Korea Times reported that Samsung’s carriers partners had to increase subsidies in order to prevent sales falling.

KT and LG Uplus are now offering KRW 450,000 ($370/EUR335) in subsidy for the Galaxy S21 and KRW 500,000 ($410/EUR375)for the Galaxy S22+ with select plans (over KRW 90,000 for KT and KRW 85,000 for LG). The Galaxy S22 Ultra was already getting KRW 500,00 in subsidies, has been since last month.

For comparison, the initial level of subsidies were on the level of KRW 150,000, a third of the current amount. The change in subsidies was agreed upon by Samsung and the carriers.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 trioThe Samsung Galaxy S22 trio

While the sagging demand is being blamed on GOS (throttling in select games and apps), one anonymous carrier representative doesn’t see it that way:

“There is a view that the GOS issue adversely affects the sales of the S22, but there is no clear decline in terms of sales volume. There is demand for devices not only from those who play games, but also from those who do not play games. There has been controversy over the GOS, but there are two high-end smartphone brands — Samsung’s Galaxy S series and Apple’s iPhone — so we don’t see a clear sales decline of the Galaxy devices.”

An analyst at Eugene Investment & Securities is forecasting an operating profit of KRW 4 trillion for Samsung’s mobile device business in Q1, an increase of KRW 1. 3 trillion compared to the last three months of 2021. The analyst doesn’t buy the carrier’s explanation, however, and does believe that the GOS scandal “left a big scar on the credibility of the Galaxy and Samsung brands”.

Samsung quietly launches Galaxy S20 FE 2022 with a lower price

Samsung quietly launches Galaxy S20 FE 2022 with a lower price

Well, this is an unexpected surprise – Samsung quietly launched a ‘Galaxy S20 FE 2022’ model in its home country. No, this isn’t an April Fools joke, even though the device seems to have appeared on KT and LG Uplus on April 1 (by the looks of it, it won’t be available on SKT).

As far as we can tell, this is identical to the original Galaxy S20 FE 5G (Snapdragon 865 chipset and all), except that the AKG headset has been removed from the retail package and the price has been dropped by KRW 200,000.

The final price is KRW 700,000 ($575/EUR525), though most buyers will likely get a carrier subsidized version. You will recognize the new model by its model number, SM-G781NK22 (or just SM-G781NK in some places). There are only three color options available: Cloud White, Cloud Lavender, and Cloud Navy.

The odd thing is that KT is offering a free AKG headset for those who buy before the end of April, which makes this just an elaborate way to offer the original Galaxy S20 FE 5G with a discount.

We have not yet seen an official announcement by Samsung. There is no sign of this 2022 edition in other countries either.

Intel shares specs of top Arc GPU – 175W TDP, up to 2250 MHz clock speed

Intel shares specs of top Arc GPU – 175W TDP, up to 2250 MHz clock speed

Intel has accidentally (or not?)

Intel has accidentally (or not?) shared some specs for its highest-end Arc GPU desktop.

The specs appear at the 29-second mark of a promo video for Intel Arc Control – Intel’s GPU monitoring app (similar to NVIDIA GeForce Experience), where users will be able to download drivers, get a detailed breakdown of performance, and set parameters of the Arc GPUs.

The 1-second snippet gives the parameters of an as of yet unannounced GPU, which at 99. 57% utilization packs 175W of power with a GPU clock speed of 2250 MHz and a VRAM clock speed of 1093 MHz.

The 175W TDP is only the GPU power, and not the full board power, which means this is likely a 200W card. The clock speed would align with about 17. 5 Gpbs of bandwidth, which equals about 560 GB/s of throughput.

This will be very much a high-end GPU, in line with AMD’s RX 6700 XT or NVIDIA’s RTX 3070.

Intel shares specs of top Arc GPU - 175W, up to 2250 MHz

Intel could launch its Arc line of desktop GPUs soon – perhaps as soon as May or June. They’re touted as having full AV1 encoding and decoding, which many creators will appreciate. AV1 is a direct competitor to HEVC – Intel claims AV1 is 20% more efficient at the same bit rate, and 50% more efficient than h.264.

The ARC GPUs have interesting tech such as XeSS – Intel’s image-upscaling algorithm and XMX AI acceleration.

Oppo F19 gets ColorOS 12 public beta

Oppo F19 gets ColorOS 12 public beta

Oppo is finally bringing the ColorOS 12 beta to the public for users of the F19 smartphone. The program was invite only since late February, but now the company is looking for 5,000 users of the midranger to participate in the next of the software.

Oppo F19 opens up for public beta of ColorOS 12

The Oppo F19 is a very popular smartphone in India, and because of that Oppo is looking for beta testers only in the South Asian country. They can apply through the Settings menu – tap on Software Update and then the gear wheel in the upper corner. If the beta is available, the “Apply for Beta Version” option will be present, otherwise, you need to wait “for the next round”.

Once people apply, they will receive the beta version within 3 workdays, meaning the package is likely sent by humans rather than being an automated process.

Oppo reminds F19 users that the device might heat, lag, and drain its battery after the update, which will improve over time – after all people should be willing to experience some inconvenience for the glamour of being pioneers in the field.

World View balloon spacecraft wants to take space tourism to new heights

World View balloon spacecraft wants to take space tourism to new heights

Space is often said to be the next frontier, at least as far as discovering new places and information goes. Most of us, however, still have a lot to learn about our own planet, especially since we rarely see the Earth from a different point of view. Space, at least those few hundred kilometers beyond our atmosphere, offers that perfect vantage point that will hopefully give us a different and better perspective of our home, literally and figuratively. That’s the kind of life-changing experience that the budding space tourism is promising, and one company is trying to promote a different kind of experience that’s meant to be enjoyed in a relaxing manner rather than the thrilling adventure the likes that Blue Origin, SpaceX, or Virgin Galactic want to give.

Designer: PriestmanGoode

When you hear the phrase “space tourism,” you will most likely imagine trips beyond our atmosphere aboard typical spacecraft like rockets. Indeed for companies like Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, that’s the most conventional way to reach the skies. Virgin Galactic, on the other hand, is taking the runway less traveled with a spaceship that takes off like an airplane, reducing the need for expensive and risky rocket launches.

These space travel experiences, however, offer just a brief glimpse of the world below them, lasting just a few minutes or an hour or two at most. They offer zero gravity, technically micro-gravity, experiences that often fill our imaginations and satisfy childhood dreams of becoming astronauts. These brief, exhilarating moments might be enough for an adventure of a lifetime, but it’s hardly the only way we can enjoy space or our planet from that altitude.

Just like a hot air balloon trip, World View is promising a more subdued experience but one that is just as enjoyable, especially since it stretches out to 6 to 12 hours. The balloon spacecraft “launches” just before dawn so that tourists get to see the sunrise from 30,000 meters above the Earth’s surface, just enough to see the planet’s curvature splitting Earth and space. After hovering for hours, the spacecraft slowly descends back to terra firma, gently and safely guided by parafoils.

The “tour” doesn’t include that period of weightlessness as the cabin is pressurized and climate-controlled, prioritizing comfort over thrills. The spacious area has room for eight passengers and two professional crew members and has amenities like in-flight dining, a bar, and reclining seats. Oversized windows give passengers a nearly unobstructed view, while cameras pointing back down to Earth let them zoom in on surface details.

Carried only by helium, World View’s balloons could offer a more sustainable alternative to rockets that still use precious fuel to launch. Intended to be part of more luxurious and relaxed activities like team-building exercises or retreats, this kind of spacecraft and launch technology really put a different perspective on space tourism, one that passengers will be able to savor for hours to get their money’s worth.

Three LG phones will get Android 12 in Q2 2022

Three LG phones will get Android 12 in Q2 2022

LG closed its mobile division, and on its way out promised current devices will keep receiving firmware updates until the summer of 2025. The Korean company now revealed the next three devices that will receive Android 12. Three more will get security updates and they will also be seeded by the end of this quarter.

Here’s the list:

It is worth noting that these updates will reach devices in South Korea first, and once the package is confirmed to be okay, will be pushed to global units.

LG reminds its users to back up any important data because even though the updates are official and not beta, files could still be lost in the transitioning process from Android 11 to Android 12.
