Technics launches a 50th-anniversary edition of their legendary SL-1200 turntable

Technics launches a 50th-anniversary edition of their iconic SL-1200 turntable, available in seven colors.

Known around the world as the best turntable you can get for under a grand, the Technics SL-1200 is a series of direct-drive turntables. While many professional DJs consider the Technics SL-1200 to be their go-to turntable, the technical build of this line of turntables appeals to audiophiles too, who only use the turntable for at-home listening. The series of turntables offer exceptional sound quality as a result of precise motors and absorbent isolation, today Technics releases its 50th-anniversary model.

Designer: Technics

Operating the whole show, the SL-1200 turntable’s main feature is its direct-drive motor, which offers dynamic accuracy when playing records. Since its introduction in the 1970s, the sound quality and accuracy have “further evolved with the SL-1200/1210MK7, and achieved even higher sound quality as the Coreless Direct Drive Motor.” The tonearm is also specific to Technics equipment, the SL-1200 features an S-shaped tonearm, which is unique to Technics audio gear. The S-shaped tonearm produces music in high quality without any stylus skipping by moving along its own arc.

In addition to the SL-1200 turntable’s unique tonearm and direct-drive motor, each insulator foot on the 50th-anniversary edition consists of an internal spring and rubber cushion material to shut out any reverberating vibrations. Integrated pitch controls also help set the Technics SL-1200 apart from other turntables. As the designers note, “Pitch control on the SL-1200 was originally utilized for the precise adjustment of rotation speed. This function was used by club DJs to adjust the pitch of two tracks in order to create a seamless transition. This technique led to the explosive popularity of the SL-1200 worldwide.”

While the designers at Technics haven’t changed the new model too much when compared to the first model, there was never a need-the SL-1200 has always been about the “pursuit for pure audio performance.” Technics goes on to explain, “The vibration-absorbing cabinet and insulators suppress undesirable noise, while the gimbal suspension tonearm provides high tracking performance for high-fidelity sound reproduction.”

Amazfit unveils new, cheaper version of the GTS 2 Mini with the same features

Over a year ago the Amazfit GTS 2 Mini launched in India at Rs7,000 and proved to be one of the more popular smartwatches from the company. Now it has come out with a new version, which knocks the price down to Rs6,000, which will go on sale on the official store and Amazon.in on April 11 (Monday). Note that there will be a special launch discount of Rs1,000 only on the 11th.

The company simply calls the watch “Amazfit GTS 2 Mini (new version)”, although a side by side comparison showed no actual changes (other than the price, of course).

3D-printed artificial reefs made from cremains are designed to regenerate marine biodiversity

3D-printed artificial reefs made from cremains are designed to regenerate marine biodiversity

Resting Reefs is a system of artificial reefs that are 3D-printed from the cremated ashes of passed-over loved ones.

Spreading the ashes of relatives who’ve passed over across the ocean is a beautiful way to memorialize loved ones. While the symbolism behind it is the point of tossing your loved ones’ ashes into the wind, Royal College of Art graduates Louise Lenborg Skajem and Aura Elena Murillo Perez developed a means to still memorialize our passed-over loved ones while regenerating endangered ecosystems in the process. Resting Reef, a line of artificial reefs made from cremated ashes using 3D technologies, marks the culmination of Lenborg Skajem’s and Murillo Perez’s studies at RCA.

Designers: Louise Lenborg Skajem and Aura Elena Murillo Perez

Working with the remains of deceased animals instead of human ashes, the design duo combined animal bones with pulverized oyster shells and a binder to create a composite to be 3D-printed into stippled mounds that resemble underwater reefs. While the designers are still testing their formulas, “it will contain a binder like a low-carbon cement suitable for marine environments.”

The 3D-printed mounds offer ideal growing conditions for oysters by mimicking the form and natural growing scheme of stromatolite reefs, which are formed from microorganisms like blue-green algae. The ashes can be made into reef mounds, which allows the surviving relatives to view their loved ones’ final resting place.

Built to prevent natural and human-induced erosion, protect shorelines from the natural elements, and regenerate native biodiversity, Resting Reef transforms traditional funeral services into preservational burial methods that protect marine life. Putting the customizable process in their own words, the design duo explains, “The way they grow is in layers, which is very similar to how oyster shells grow. We are using 3D printers to bio-mimic similar layers and ridges that are ideal for small marine organisms to attach to.”

Honor Play 6T and Play 6T Pro arrive with Dimensity chipsets

Honor Play 6T and Play 6T Pro arrive with Dimensity chipsets

Honor held a virtual launch today, announcing two new phones, part of the Play series – a vanilla Play 6T and a slightly more powerful Play 6T Pro. Both have 5G-enabled Dimensity chipsets and attractive prices, but there’s a big chance these devices remain bound to the domestic market.

Honor Play 6T and Play 6T Pro arrive with Dimensity chipsets

The Honor Play 6T comes with a 6. 7″ LCD with a waterdrop notch on top for the 5MP camera. It is powered by a Dimensity 700 chipset and will sell with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.

The back has a new design that we haven’t seen on Honor’s phones yet and a 13MP main sensor. There are also a couple of 2MP auxilary cameras and an LED flash.

Samsung Galaxy M53 goes official: a budget A73 that keeps the 108MP camera

Samsung Galaxy M53 goes official: a budget A73 that keeps the 108MP camera

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy M53 5G, which is equipped with a 108 MP main camera and a large 6. 7″ 120 Hz Super AMOLED Plus display. If those specs sound familiar, it’s because the M53 is basically a budget version of the Galaxy A73 5G (rather than the A53, despite the similar names).

Samsung Galaxy M53 5GSamsung Galaxy M53 5G

The one important thing that separates the Galaxy M53 and A73 is the chipset – the M53 is probably powered by a Dimensity 900 instead of the Snapdragon 778G of the A-series phones (“probably” because Samsung rarely list chipset details and we have to confirm those for ourselves). Both are 6 nm chips (TSMC), but the Snapdragon has a better CPU makeup (4x Cortex-A78 based cores vs. 2x A78) and a more powerful GPU.

Also, there is only one memory configuration, 6/128 GB, with no options for RAM or storage upgrades. The microSD slot does make the storage situation less of a worry, however.

A few other cuts were also made in the camera department. The aforementioned 108 MP main camera that sits behind an f/1. 8 lens, but it has lost the Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). The ultra wide camera got a lower resolution 8 MP sensor (down from 12 MP). The remaining two modules on the back are a 2 MP macro and a 2 MP depth sensor. The 32 MP selfie camera survived the budget cut unscathed.

Samsung Galaxy M53 goes official: a cheaper A73 that keeps the 108MP camera

It is punch holed into Galaxy M53’s 6. 7″ display, a Super AMOLED Plus panel with FHD+ resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate. There’s no word on strengthened glass, but the A73 doesn’t have Gorilla Glass (or similar) either. The fingerprint reader did move to the side (Power button), though not everyone will miss the in-display reader.

Samsung Galaxy M53 goes official: a cheaper A73 that keeps the 108MP camera

The phone is powered by a 5,000 mAh battery with 25W fast charging, matching the A73 and A53. One downside of switching to the Dimensity chip is that Wi-Fi connectivity is limited to Wi-Fi 5 (ac) instead of 6. On the flip side, Bluetooth 5. 2 is supported (vs. 5.0).

This was a quiet launch so we’re still waiting on pricing info for the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G, along with a list of launch regions. It this follows the pattern of the A-series launch, it may be a couple of weeks before we find these things out.

Realme GT 2 and GT Neo3’s India launch confirmed, world’s first flagship store opening soon

Realme GT 2 and GT Neo3’s India launch confirmed, world’s first flagship store opening soon

Realme had a big today in India as it introduced five new products in the country – Realme GT 2 Pro, Realme 9 (4G), Realme Buds Air 3, Realme Book Prime, and Realme Smart TV Stick. And towards the end of the event, Realme VP, Mr. Madhav Sheth, announced that the vanilla GT 2 will launch in India during the company’s fourth anniversary, which will be celebrated on May 4.

Realme GT 2 and GT Neo3's India launch confirmed, world's first flagship store opening soon

Mr. Sheth later took to Twitter to announce that the GT Neo3 is also coming soon to India. The company VP didn’t explicitly mention the smartphone’s name, but the post’s caption and the short video clip attached leave little to the imagination. The latter also suggests that Realme will bring the GT Neo3’s cool Le Mans version to India.

The Realme GT 2 was unveiled in February alongside the GT 2 Pro. It comes with the Snapdragon 888 SoC, 6.62″ 120Hz FullHD+ AMOLED screen, 50MP triple camera, 5,000 mAh battery, and 65W charging.

The Realme GT Neo3, unveiled last month, is powered by the Dimensity 8100 chip, features a slightly bigger 120Hz FullHD+ AMOLED panel, and sports a 50MP triple camera system on the rear. But, its biggest highlight is the 150W charging, advertised to fill the 4,500 mAh battery up to 50% in just 5 minutes. There’s also an 80W version of the phone, which packs a 5,000 mAh cell.

We know the 150W variant will launch in India, but it’s unclear if Realme will also bring the GT Neo3’s 80W version to its biggest market or skip it. We’ll hopefully find that out soon. In the meantime, you can head this way to check out the GT 2 and GT Neo3’s detailed specs.

In addition to introducing new products in India at today’s event, Realme announced that it will open the world’s first Realme flagship store in India soon. It will be located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, but the young brand didn’t reveal where exactly.

Samsung US offers up to $100 store credit with a Galaxy S22 phone

Samsung US offers up to $100 store credit with a Galaxy S22 phone

During the pre-order period Samsung US was offering $50 discounts on the regular prices of the Galaxy S22 series – those regular prices being $800 for the S22, $1,000 for the S22+ and $1,200 for the S22 Ultra (for the base memory configuration). Those prices haven’t budged since then, however, the company has offered new ways to save some money almost every week.

This week the offer is simple – you get store credit with your purchase. The Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S22+ come with $100 of Samsung Credit attached, the Galaxy S22 with $50. Note that this offer only for US customers.

You can get up to $100 instant Samsung Credit to spend on accessories, bundles and even tablets

Using the credit is pretty straightforward – after you pick out the phone configuration you like, you hit ‘Continue’ and you are taken to a page where you can spend your credit. Keep in mind that a lot of accessories are 20% off this week, so a $100 go further than usual.

You can keep it simple and just grab Samsung Care+ ($12/month), which covers accidental damage (drops, spills) and cheap screen repairs ($29).

Alternatively, you can pick up an extra gadget or three. For example, the Galaxy Watch4 (44 mm, Bluetooth) is 30% off right now and costs $196. The Galaxy Buds2 have their own discount and are selling for $130. A “fitness companion bundle” gets you the watch and Buds2 for $300 (a bit less than if you get them separately). This is before you apply the Credit, of course, so the Watch4 can be yours for under a hundred bucks.

One of the highest discounts is on the Galaxy Tab S7 FE – the Wi-Fi models (64, 128 and 256 GB) are 40% off, so the slate starts at $318.

Finally, don’t forget that the Enhanced Trade-in program is still active. This means you can send up to 2 old devices, including phones (in good condition or with a cracked screen), tablets and smartwatches.

The sensors for the main camera will have 50MP resolution, while the ultrawide snapper will do 8MP stills. There’s also a 2MP unit, which is either a macro camera or a depth sensor.
