Eleven is a concept sphere that aims to give the full immersive VR experience

Eleven is a concept sphere that aims to give the full immersive VR experience

A few years ago, when virtual reality and augmented reality started becoming a, well, reality for a lot of gadget users, we thought that the life we saw in sci-fi movies and TV series will finally be upon us. Well years later and while there have been some advances made, it’s still something that’s not as pervasive in our everyday lives. The VR device has not caught on as fast as we expected, and is still considered a luxury by many people. We are still seeing interesting innovations, at the very least in product design.

Designer Tai Geng

There’s this interesting concept for a virtual reality sphere that can give users full immersion, something that improves on the usual head-mounted devices. These HMDs are still the most common VR gadgets right now but are considered just a temporary step in the evolution of the technology. Eleven is the product idea. It is an electromagnetic sphere suspended over an electromagnetic base. This sphere aims to provide a full immersive VR experience through movies, games, and teaching tools.

Inside the sphere is a seat with smart foam contouring so the person using it will feel comfortable and safe inside. Even though the sphere can move in various directions, you won’t need to use seatbelts. The sphere can simulate movements occurring in media, whether they are sideways, forward or backwards. It also has the ability to move upward and down. If the sphere does have zero latency, you will experience instantaneous movements from your game or movie or video.

It seems to be floating above the base as it is designed to have three triangulating electromagnets to orient it when it’s not moving. They covered all these mechanisms with aluminum materials that are fastened into the hollowed base. The movement of the sphere depends on what is going on in the video. This is translated by the attraction and repulsion from the magnets that are used to rotate the sphere.

This is by no means a small sphere as with the base it stands at 6 feet. You will find it fascinating to experience this immersive VR experience. However, if you have motion sickness, this might not be such a good idea of course.

Realme Q5 teased with faster charging, Q5 Pro x Vans version leaks

Realme Q5 teased with faster charging, Q5 Pro x Vans version leaks

The Realme Q2 series reached 1 million sales seven months after launch. Around the same time the Q3 series was teased – one year later the Q3 phones have reached 2 million sales. What’s next?

Realme CMO Xu Qi Chase is teasing the arrival of the Q5 series on Weibo (skipping number 4, of course). The teaser is tucked beneath the 2 million sales announcement and promises “new surprises for flash charging”.

The bottom row lists 30W, 65W and a question mark, which will likely be filled in with 80W. That is the rumored charge rate for the Realme Q5 Pro, which will be equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery. This matches one of the configurations of the GT Neo3.

The Realme Q5 Pro will be a more affordable version of the Neo. It is expected to have a 6.62” AMOLED display (1,080 x 2,400 px) with 120 Hz refresh rate and an HDR10+ certification. It will be powered by a Snapdragon 870 paired with 8/12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128/256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

Additional rumored specs include a 64 MP main camera on the rear, an 8 MP ultra wide-angle cam (119°) and a 2 MP macro module. On the front, a 16 MP selfie camera and an in-display fingerprint reader. The USB-C cable will also have to carry audio (no 3.5 mm jack, by the sound of it), but it will be Hi-Res Audio certified. The phone will also boast stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos.

These specs may not be 100% accurate, they are a mix of the TENAA listing and rumors. The Q5 Pro sounds a lot like a GT Neo2 with faster charging (up from 65W).

A special edition of the Realme Q5 Pro leaked early – a collaboration with Vans that will bring over the popular checkerboard design from shoes to what looks like glass. Notice that this is a photo of a promo poster being mocked up in Photoshop, so the design might not be finalized.

This poster matches the phone design seen on TENAA with a triple camera arranged in a triangle and two separate LED flashes, which again is a callback to the GT Neo2. More on the Realme Q5 soon as it is expected to go official later this month.

Apple now manufacturing iPhone 13 in India

Apple now manufacturing iPhone 13 in India

Apple is now manufacturing the iPhone 13 locally in India at a Foxconn plant near Chennai. The news comes after earlier reports already confirmed Cupertino had started trial production of the iPhone 13 back in December.

We are excited to begin making iPhone 13 — with its beautiful design, advanced camera systems for stunning photos and videos, and the incredible performance of the A15 Bionic chip right here in India for our local customers.

Apple also manufactures some its older models in India like the iPhone 12, iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2020) and is estimated to make 70% of the phones it sells in India locally. Previous reports suggest the iPhone 13 Pro series is next in line to be made locally in India.

One of the key incentives for smartphone manufacturers to assemble their devices in India is to save up on import duties which include a 20% import tax. Apple is rumored in moving up to 20% of its iPhone production from China to India in the near future.

The only Apple charger you need – the MagEZ Slider wirelessly charges ALL your Apple gadgets and even has a detachable power bank

The only Apple charger you need – the MagEZ Slider wirelessly charges ALL your Apple gadgets and even has a detachable power bank

This could be the charger that will rule all …

Meet the PITAKA MagEZ Slider. It’s a charger. No, wait. It’s a wireless charger. Uh, hold on. It’s a wireless charger with MagSafe capabilities. Oh, let me say that again. This wireless charger has MagSafe capability and features a detachable powerbank. It can also charge Apple Watch and AirPods. Simultaneously.

Designers: Stephen Lu, Liang Daqian, Lucky Liu, James Zheng, Tom Chen & Li Huipeng

Charge all your Apple essentials, including your iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch.

Over the course of its existence, PITAKA’s worked to fundamentally make Apple’s products better by designing highly functional charging accessories for them. However, the MagEZ Slider feels like a culmination all of that hard work. The MagEZ Slider, a wireless charger that can be used with your watch, phone and TWS headphones, is a compact, lightweight device that is small enough to fit on any surface and also ensures that you don’t clutter your work space with wires or dongles.

The MagEZ Slider builds on one of PITAKA’s previous products, the MagEZ Juice. MagEZ Juice, which was an ultra-portable wireless charging bank with a dock/stand that allowed you to charge your phone almost anywhere in the world, came with its own dock/stand. The MagEZ Slider has a lot more to offer in this updated version. It has the MagSafe power bank, a docking station for iPhone and an AirPod charging zone. The rear surface of the MagEZ Slider lets you easily pop in a magnetic tray to rest your AirPods on, effectively charging them. This tray has not been baked into the MagEZ Slider to allow for a slimmer profile to fit your specific needs.

Charge the power bank by placing it in the dock, then snap on your iPhone for simultaneous charging.

An adjustable, magnetic stand provides enough space to charge your AirPods.

Plugin and charge your Apple Watch using the Power Dongle.

To charge your Apple Watch, the MagEZ Slider comes with a USB-C port on the side that lets you pop an Apple Watch charging pad in. The removable charging pad ensures that the MagEZ Slider’s design remains clean and minimalistic, allowing you to expand your charging capabilities should you need to.

The Slider comes with a turntable base. Designed to let you adjust your gadgets to face you wherever you are without fiddling with the apparatus (and potentially knocking your phone or other gadgets over, the MagEZ Slider’s rotating turntable base swivels a full 360deg. This unique feature is not what the Slide gets its name. It is, in fact, the sliding MagSafe power bank that gives the MagEZ Slide its name, and also its key user interaction.

The MagEZ Slider’s simplicity lies in the ability to store all of your charging needs in one location. However, this convenience can be augmented by the MagEZ Slider having its own magnetic wireless bank. With a built-in 4000mAh battery, the power bank (which could also be found on the 2019 MagEZ Juice) is the MagEZ Slider’s piece de resistance, letting you effectively travel while your gadget charges. It has a round, curving design, which makes it simple to slip into pockets and dock in the MagEZ Slider when you get back at your desk. The MagEZ SLider is the perfect accessory for Apple accessories and chargers.

This indoor camera concept looks like a literal eyeball watching your every move

This indoor camera concept looks like a literal eyeball watching your every move

Unlike the Eye of Sauron, this home security camera looks less frightening and has a secret trick to keep it from seeing you all the time.

Smart security cameras for homes have seen a lot of popularity over the last few years. However, they also have been criticized. Having something that can see you 24/7 can be a horrifying thought for some homeowners, especially when it involves a third party, like a company that can take a peek at any time, whether you know it or not. There is a growing desire to be safe and secure while out. Service providers as well as homeowners must find ways to balance privacy and security. The concept of this product aims to accomplish exactly that. It provides a fast and simple way to disengage the all-seeing eyes and instantly know when it is sleeping.

Designer: Maurice Mischo

It’s almost ironic that the design of this indoor Wi-Fi camera is patterned after an eye. An eyeball is the best way to say “I see” and that’s why many connected camera companies deliberately design their products so they are discrete, discreet, and less intrusive. This camera idea is a bizarre design choice, especially when it comes to privacy.

The theme of the VISIO WiFi camera idea might not be privacy but rather “obviousness”. It is a camera, and it doesn’t disguise itself as anything else. You or your guests are unlikely to be caught unaware that there is an electronic eye that can see your every move within its field of vision.

It will be clear if the camera has been disconnected, rather than you having to guess it’s state. Smart cameras often have an on switch you only can toggle through an app. This makes it difficult to know if the camera is recording. Not all cameras have visible and unambiguous status indicators, so some owners might feel the need to just physically cover the camera when they want some privacy. That, however, might not stop it from still recording audio.

In contrast, the VISIO camera is completely disconnected when it isn’t connected to its base, which serves as its wireless power supply. Like any disembodied eye, this electronic optic won’t work unless it’s connected to something, though it would still have a small battery so that it could properly shut down when you remove it from its dock.

The VISIO compact Wi-Fi camera concept is genius in its simplicity. Easy to use and easy to distinguish, it takes a lot of guesswork and stress out of the equation of using a smart home camera. Privacy-focused, it is not “in your face”, and incorporates that privacy feature in its design. Unfortunately, this might be against the business interests of smart camera manufacturers, and is why it’s unlikely we will ever see something so simple like this smart eye.

Etto dining table imagines how tech can be unobtrusively embedded in everyday things

Etto dining table imagines how tech can be unobtrusively embedded in everyday things

Minimalist furniture is often considered antithetical to hi-tech features, but this concept challenges those assumptions in a simple yet beautiful way.

There is no stopping smarter appliances and furniture from being made. Many lighting options today can connect to the Internet. Some wooden shelves and desks have wireless charging built in. The influx of technology in our homes can sometimes feel a bit too invasive and disruptive, especially if they tend to drive people apart, even when sharing the same physical space. Technology can sometimes also be too “in your face,” flexing its muscles and creating disharmony in people’s lives. Of course, it doesn’t have to be that way at all, and thoughtful product design offers the opportunities to upgrade what looks like simple, minimalist furniture without disrupting a family’s dynamics. It can be used by friends and family to help them build better relationships.

Designer: Dan Nigri

1

The dining table has always been traditionally associated with family bonding, at least before the era of television and smartphones. It is easy to see how many TV dramas and romcoms have their most pivotal or emotional scenes at the dining table. Things have changed drastically over the past years, especially when family members started paying more attention to their phones instead of each other, even when sitting around the same table. It’s only fitting, then, that this concept starts with a dining table to help repair the damage that technology has done in our lives.

At first brush, Etto looks like a nondescript wooden table. Although it is minimalistic, we like its design. Things change, however, when you “turn on” the table and the surface starts to display icons and text. Underneath that wooden veneer is apparently a screen that you can also touch and play with. You can also assume it is connected to the Internet.

1

The motivation behind this concept design is to bring everyone back to the dining table again. In addition to eating together, the table encourages other social activities, particularly playing games. With a touch screen, however, Etto can really become a canvas for almost anything, like a calendar and project board for discussing the next family vacation or a leaderboard of chores that everyone has accomplished.

It isn’t a gigantic tablet, though, so there are still limits on what you can do on the table. It is limited to a monochrome display of white against the natural wooden surface of the table, and there don’t seem to be enough pixels to display hi-res images. These limitations are designed to be seamless with our daily lives, and not cause disruption or distraction.

Many of the technologies needed to make the Etto table happen already exist today, with touch screen panels hiding behind wooden planks. This is a much more enjoyable and easier way to see a future filled with information and touch screens at all points. You can have your cake and eat it too, and not be worried that it’ll come screaming at you for attention.
