Resident Evil 4 VR adds The Mercenaries mode in free update for Quest 2

Resident Evil 4 VR adds The Mercenaries mode in free update for Quest 2

Resident Evil 4‘s virtual reality rework for Quest 2 headsets is getting a free update, one that will add the beloved Mercenaries mode from the original game. The Mercenaries VR was announced Wednesday by Oculus Studios and Capcom along with developer Armature Studio at the Meta Quest gaming show. Today’s update is now available.

The VR version of The Mercenaries for Resident Evil 4 VR features online leaderboards and 20 new challenges for players to experience. These challenges unlock new features such as a Big Head Mode and a classic black-and white horror mode. Players can also get golden gun skins by completing these challenges. Those unlocks will be accessible in the main game, after acquiring them in The Mercenaries.

Oculus Studios, Capcom, and Armature Studio released Resident Evil 4 VR in October 2021. The game reimagines Capcom’s classic survival horror action game in first-person. According to our colleagues at The Verge, it plays better than expected.

In the Mercenaries, players battle waves of enemies while given limited time and ammo, chaining together kill combos for higher scores. Resident Evil 4 VR‘s version of The Mercenaries includes playable characters Leon S. Kennedy, Ada Wong, Hunk, Jack Krauser, and Albert Wesker.

Capcom introduced The Mercenaries as a bonus mode in the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. The mode wasn’t present in 2020’s Resident Evil 3 remake — Capcom opted for the 4v1 multiplayer game Resident Evil Resistance instead — or in Resident Evil 7 biohazard, but Capcom brought back the combo-focused, beat-the-clock mode for Resident Evil Village.

Resident Evil 4 was first released in 2005. Initially a GameCube exclusive, RE4 later came to Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii, Windows PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Capcom previously experimented with VR in 2017’s Resident Evil 7 biohazard.

2024 iPhones will have UD selfie camera and Face ID, analyst predicts

2024 iPhones will have UD selfie camera and Face ID, analyst predicts

We aren’t there yet when it comes to under-display cameras. Current implementations lack satisfactory image quality and are far from being a good enough alternative to the conventional cutout approach.

iPhones in 2024 will have UD selfie camera and Face ID

However, Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple is progressing with the development. He says that Apple will bring the first iPhones with UD selfie camera along with UD Face ID in 2024. And the scheduled upgrade is more of a marketing purpose than actual technological limitations.

UD-smoking cameras are always at a disadvantage when it comes down to image quality. Less light comes into the sensor, due to the extra layer on top. That’s why the ISP and corrective algorithms are crucial for combating this effect. It will be interesting to see what Apple comes up with to counter this. Sadly, we still have about 17 months of waiting to do before we find out.

NFL VR video game launches on Quest, PlayStation this fall

NFL VR video game launches on Quest, PlayStation this fall

The National Football League has taken a second shot at first-person soccer.

Eighteen years after NFL 2K5 toyed with the concept, the league and developer StatusPro are making NFL Pro Era, the first American football video game for virtual reality headsets. NFL Pro Era will be released for PlayStation VR and Meta Quest this autumn.

A video announcing the game at Wednesday’s Meta Quest Gaming Showcase gave viewers a sense of what to expect. Lamar Jackson, the Baltimore Ravens quarterback, took players into the huddle, then the line of scrimmage, where they called and adjusted the play in first person. After looking downfield, the user spears their primary receiver with a high, arcing pass to the back of the end zone.

A news release from StatusPro said game modes will let players “lead your team to a Super Bowl, improve your QB skills by participating in drills, or play catch virtually with your friends in your favorite NFL stadium.” NFL Pro Era appears to be played from the quarterback position only. The game is fully licensed by the league and the NFL Players Association, meaning all rosters will be game-day authentic.

“Utilizing player data was a must-have to create a truly authentic NFL player experience,” Troy Jones, StatusPro’s chief executive, said in a statement. Jones, an NCAA Division I quarterback at Western Kentucky and Akron, founded StatusPro in 2020 with Andrew Hawkins, a six-year NFL wide receiver who earned an MBA from Indiana University while in the league.

” The experience is so real that the fans will be amazed by play and feel just like professional athletes,” Hawkins stated.

NFL Pro Era will be the first fully licensed NFL video game, on a console, and not published by Electronic Arts since 2004. Since then, EA Sports has been the exclusive licensee for Madden NFL games. As NFL Pro Era demonstrates, virtual reality football games are an exception to this, whether on a console or otherwise. EA and the NFL renewed their deal (reported to be $1. 5 billion) in 2020, on terms that still allowed for 2K Sports to announce multiple “non-simulation football game experiences,” such as arcade-style games similar to NFL Blitz (a trademark EA owns).

Arataki Itto is a highlight of Genshin Impact’s Irodori Festival

Arataki Itto is a highlight of Genshin Impact’s Irodori Festival

Arataki Itto, a club-wielding warrior from Genshin Impact, can rock black nails and red eyeliner like nobody’s business. Hebo is a rambunctious and sarcastic himbo who refers to himself simply as “numero uno” in a humorous way. And now, Itto has stolen the show in Genshin Impact‘s newest event, the Irodori Festival, and it’s all because this bitch accidentally drank a drink with soy in it. And as everyone in the world knows, Arataki Itto is allergic to beans!

[Editor’s note: This post contains spoilers for Arataki Itto’s and Thoma’s quest in the Irodori Festival.]

Itto’s new story comes as part of the 2. 6 “Zephyr of the Violet Garden” update. The Irodori Festival, in the realm of the game is an opportunity for Inazuma’s region to promote cultural exchange. In the brief but delirious quest tied to the event, the Traveler (the generic name for the protagonist of Genshin Impact) and their familiar Paimon help organize the event and are tasked with stopping Itto and his friends from hogging a tanuki-themed photo cut-out board.

When approached by Traveler, Itto has no interest in leaving the little cut-out board, which is when Thoma steps in. Thoma is both the Kamisato Clan’s housekeeper and manager, making him a bit heavier. After a brief fluttering of eyes, and an acknowledgement of their “bromance” from Paimon, Thoma suggests Itto solves his problems with a life-or-death “volunteer off.” Whoever wins gets the festival’s free signature drink, a cocktail inspired by a popular light novel.

Itto initially had no desire to volunteer. He discovers that the drink is possible and he says “Thoma,” then he retorts and adds, “Thoma bro, my man, my dude. Maybe I didn’t understand properly.” Then he asks for more information about the way to win the light drink. It is a brief, rambling moment but Max Mittelman’s portrayal of Itto helps make it come to life. Fans loved it even more when they learned that the line was entirely improvised.

Mittelman has a reputation for portraying offbeat characters such as Saitama in One Punch man. On Twitter, responding to a Genshin Impact fan account, he said, “it always tickles me when productions let me go off script.”

Upon winning the volunteering competition, the previously starry-eyed Itto gets a cold hard dose of reality when he realizes the cocktail has soy milk in it. Panic arises, as characters shout, “He’s allergic to beans!” And the great warrior falls to the ground with stomach pain.

It is a delightful and joyful little escape from all the tedious tasks that come with the festival. It’s an exciting highlight of the update. You can experience the joy of the mission with Arataki Itto or Thoma by completing the quest “About that Time We Saved the Tanuki Photo Board” under the “Hues of the Violet Garden” event.

Netflix to soon charge you for sharing passwords with other households

Netflix to soon charge you for sharing passwords with other households

Netflix is currently cracking down on multiple households sharing their passwords on a single account, but only in some markets. Following its latest financial report that showed a decrease in paying subscribers and sent the stock tanking some 35%, the company pledged to go after all of its subscribers doing this. And there is no shortage of those, to be honest.

Netflix will soon charge accounts sharing passwords with other households

According to Netflix, around 100 million households share passwords. All of those are a missed opportunity and the company argues that this is the root cause of this quarter’s decline in paid subscribers. According to its estimates around 200,000 users left the platform or decided to join one of the password-sharing accounts.

Of course, password-sharing practices exist on a spectrum. Some use the passwords for occasional viewing while others watch Netflix on a daily basis. That’s why some of the accounts won’t be monetized but the streaming service will surely try to crack down on those that systematically break its terms of service.

It has been projected that the platform will lose about 2 million paying subscribers over the next quarter but subscriber growth will resume in the second half of 2022.

Origin coffee machine concept pays tribute to Ethiopia

Origin coffee machine concept pays tribute to Ethiopia

Whenever I take my first sip of coffee in the morning, I am always thankful to whoever it was that first developed coffee and the farmers who harvested this particular blend I’m drinking. While some of the world’s best coffee is generally known to come from Brazil, Colombia, and Vietnam (my country, the Philippines, will hopefully someday be included in that list), one of the unsung heroes of the industry is Ethiopia where coffee beans have been thriving since the 7th century. This concept design for a coffee maker pays tribute to the East African country.

Designer: Cheese C

The Origin coffee maker concept wants to bring “meaningful coffee” to your cup by reminding you of its origins. The shape of the coffee maker is inspired by the map of Ethiopia, although of course it’s not in the exact shape but is modeled after the basic outline. This way, the designer is able to “honor” the origin of coffee, although historians can’t really say that the locals who grew the beans cultivated or consumed these precious beans there.

But in any case, the Origin name is pretty apt. The shape is part cylindrical and part rectangular but with a slight protruding top, particularly where the “pressured” coffee comes out. At first glance, it reminds me of a traditional moka pot but without the spout and the handle. It is made from metal and the color is achromatic, giving it an industrial feel that can match other kitchen appliances if that’s your theme. The finishing is not smooth though as it intentionally makes it look like it has corrosions and scratches.

The product design makes it seem easy to use as there are just a few buttons you need to press including the on/off and open/close buttons. You have the option to make an espresso or an americano and there’s also a button or level for the water and the beans. Being a coffee addict, this is something I may actually consider especially as it was designed meaningfully. But of course, a coffee maker or machine is only as good as its beans and the water you use.

D&D ruleset could be applied to more brands and IP, just like Magic

D&D ruleset could be applied to more brands and IP, just like Magic

Hasbro is considering using the Dungeons & Dragons ruleset as the foundation for games that explore more brands and intellectual property, the company said Tuesday. CEO Chris Cocks said in a call with investors that Hasbro’s newly acquired digital toolset, D&D Beyond, could become the main hub for that kind of expansion.

When asked about the due diligence that Cocks and his team performed prior to the acquisition of D&D Beyond from Fandom, he transitioned quickly into discussing growth opportunities created by that purchase. One of them was the expansion of Universes Beyond.

“We have a number of international growth opportunities,” Cocks stated. Cocks said that there is a lot more exclusive content available. You know, we’ve talked a lot about Universes Beyond in Magic, which is this concept of thinking about Magic as a play system and bringing in outside brands or outside IP into that play system. We see potential for that with D&D as well, and we think D&D Beyond can be a primary hub for that.”

Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond was announced in 2021. It’s a series of partnerships with outside companies that puts their characters and their worlds onto Magic cards. The first batch of partners includes Games Workshop, which is working with Wizards to create a Warhammer 40,000-themed collection of Commander decks. Following that launch, a partnership with Middle-earth Enterprises (formerly Tolkien Enterprises), will put characters from The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy into play. A previously released collection of The Walking Dead-themed cards is also grandfathered into the program.

What would Universes Beyond look like when applied to Dungeons & Dragons? Well, it would probably look a lot like the other licensing partnerships that Wizards has already published for the 5th edition ruleset. They include a Stranger Things-themed starter set, a Rick & Morty-themed starter set, and the co-branded books featuring the cast and characters from Critical Role. The only difference here is that Hasbro sees D&D Beyond — a 100% digital platform — as the central hub for those kinds of products.

Cocks also invoked the Hasbro Pulse initiative, which has been a driving force in creating limited edition, high-end Star Wars and Transformers toys starting with Jabba’s Sail Barge from a few years back. It also played a roll in rebooting the HeroQuest franchise and the third edition of Betrayal at House on the Hill. You can easily see a Beadle & Grimm’s collector’s edition of a Universes Beyond D&D Campaign being offered for sale in this area. D&D Beyond would be the test bed to find the largest fanbase, while Hasbro Pulse would help to market and execute on the high-end offering.

“We see a lot of e-commerce and direct opportunities working in partnership with our Hasbro Pulse team to have physical-digital tie-ins that are unique to the [D&D Beyond] platform,” Cocks said. “It’s a fantastic learning opportunity for us and, to your point, very similar to what we’ve seen with [Magic: The Gathering] Arena, where we build this relationship with our customers. It’s a great incremental business opportunity and a fantastic learning platform for us to understand how people are playing our games, what do they want to purchase, and how can we make our products better. This has been an integral part of the segmentation process for Magic over the past couple years .”

Players can now update DualSense PS5 controllers directly on PC

Players can now update DualSense PS5 controllers directly on PC

If you’re a PlayStation 5 owner, you likely know the hassle of having to connect to your console in order to update the firmware for your DualSense controller. It’s especially cumbersome if you happen to be a PC gamer who prefers the feel of the DualSense to that of keyboard and mouse.

Starting today, that’s no longer an issue, as Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Wednesday that PC players will now be able to update the firmware of their DualSense wireless controllers using Windows 11 and “select Windows 10 devices,” without needing to connect to a PS5.

In a page dedicated to the announcement, Sony details the steps that players will have to take in order to update their controllers through their Windows PC, including downloading Sony’s firmware updater app and connecting their wireless controller using a USB cable.

Players will be periodically notified of new firmware updates and prompted to update their controllers to the latest version via the firmware app.
