Counterpoint: refurbished smartphone market beats expectations to grow 15% in 2021

Counterpoint: refurbished smartphone market beats expectations to grow 15% in 2021

The market for refurbished smartphones grew 15% in 2021 compared to the year before, outpacing the 4. 5% growth of the new smartphone market. Counterpoint Research reports that refurbished units have been gaining in popularity among consumers and smartphone makers alike.

The switch to 5G pushed many users to upgrade and, interestingly, the higher sales of new units helped boost the sales of renewed units. Many vendors have turned to trade-in deals to lower the purchase cost of new models, which in turn increased the availability of units that can be refurbished and sold again.

Counterpoint: the refurbished smartphone market grew 15% in 2021, beating expectations

Cost saving is a big factor of why people go with refurbished over new – a phone on the second hand market can be 60% cheaper on average than a new unit. The two markets that saw the biggest growth are Latin America (+29%) and India (+25%).

However, mature markets like the US (+15%), Europe (+10%) and China (+10%) also saw people buying restored phones in increasing numbers. These markets also feel a cash crunch, but it’s not all bad.

Counterpoint: the refurbished smartphone market grew 15% in 2021, beating expectations

Sustainability and an eco-friendly initiatives are becoming more popular with consumers and getting a refurbished phone instead of a new one is a great way to reduce e-waste. These initiatives are gaining traction with manufacturers and carriers as well, though their main focus remains on profitability.

“In the EU, government initiatives are helping secondary market sales. With e-waste reduction goals in mind, carriers are making an effort to make use of more secondary market devices. Last but not least, EU markets and collection companies (Back Market and EcoATM are two examples) that Jeff Fieldhack reports is growing their presence ,”.

Third parties also are looking to expand their phone businesses. This was enabled by the growing Right to Repair movement in Europe, the US and Japan as companies opened up access to genuine parts and tools to non-affiliated repair shops.

Apple’s iPhones still lead the second-hand market, but Samsung models are gaining in popularity too and closing the gap.

Canalys: Xiaomi lead Indian smartphone sales in Q1, Realme gained the most

Canalys: Xiaomi lead Indian smartphone sales in Q1, Realme gained the most

The global supply constraints hit India in Q1 2022, Canalys revealed in its latest smartphone market report.

Expectations were the market to record double-digit growth as pandemic recovery continues, but supply chain issues prevented companies like Xiaomi and vivo from securing enough components to manufacture their best-selling low-end models.

Canalys: Q1 smartphone sales in India are up only 2% due to supply constraints

Xiaomi recorded a yearly decline for a second consecutive quarter and so did second-placed Samsung although to a far smaller extent. In contrast Realme increased its shipments by 40% and took third place.

According to Sanyam Chaurasia, an analyst at Canalys, Realme and Itel managed to take on the competition with solid supply. Other makers eventually started to improve their numbers in March 2022 and are positive about Q2, expecting a strong quarter.

Canalys: Q1 smartphone sales in India are up only 2% due to supply constraints

The biggest challenge for smartphone makers in India will be maintaining device affordability. Gas prices and inflation are at a record high in the Asian country, and vendors will hope to maintain profitability. According to Canalys, makers will be able to have a strong market share only if they have a steady flow of mid-to-low-end devices for customers.

Google to kill call-recording apps on Play Store on May 11

Google to kill call-recording apps on Play Store on May 11

Starting with Android 10, Google killed call recording by default and on May 11, the company is implementing new Google Play Store policies preventing third-party apps from using the Accessibility API for recording the call audio stream.

Google to kill call-recording apps on Play Store on May 11

Those changes are towards improved privacy and security as call recording laws across the world vary quite a bit. However, system, pre-installed apps that already have permission to tap on the Accessibility API won’t be affected by the change.

Pixel’s and Xiaomi’s dialers, for example, are two exceptions to the rule. This is considered a native call recording functionality. Although Google has not yet disclosed plans to address these issues, it is reasonable to assume that additional policies will be developed in the future.

Xiaomi Civi 1S arrives with a Snapdragon 778G+ chipset

Xiaomi Civi 1S arrives with a Snapdragon 778G+ chipset

The Xiaomi Civi arrived in September as a beautiful device with great selfie camera capabilities for young people. Today, the company announced its successor, which is called Xiaomi Civi 1S.

The changes are boil down to the chipset which is now a Snapdragon 778G+ and the software where we see the latest version of MIUI and Android. Aside from these two, everything else remained the same, even the price.

Xiaomi Civi 1S comes with a Snapdragon 778G+

Xiaomi kept the 6. 55″ OLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate and 1080p resolution. There is a single punch hole in the center for the 32MP camera.

The camera trio on the back has the same 64MP f/1. 8 main, 8MP f/2. 2 ultrawide and 2MP macro modules.

The first Civi was powered by a Snapdragon 778G, so this time the 778G+ brings an ever so slightly faster CPU. The primary core is now clocked at 2. 5GHz, instead of 2. 4 GHz, while the GPU, ISP, and connectivity remain the same.

The Civi 1S is a fairly light smartphone at just 166 grams and is less than 8mm thick. However, this means some features are still missing – there is no slot for a microSD card, nor is there a 3. 5mm audio jack.

Xiaomi is shipping this phone with MIUI 13 out of the box, and it has Android 12 underneath. The battery is 4,500mAh with 55W fast charging, but there will be no charger in the retail box. The company will provide one at no extra charge to anyone who requests it.

Xiaomi Civi 1S comes with a Snapdragon 778G+

The Civi 1S will sell for the same price as the Civi when it launched – CNY2,299 ($355) for 8/128GB base version, CNY2,599 ($405) for 8/256 GB upgrade, and CNY 2,899 ($450) for 12/256 GB top model.

Pre-sale has already begun in China. The first Civi never made it outside the domestic market, and it’s extremely unlikely that we’ll see that change with the 1s.
