Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro is coming on April 28

Huawei launched the Watch GT 3 last October, and it will follow it up with the Pro model on April 28 at an event in China which will begin at 7PM local time.

Huawei hasn’t detailed the Watch GT 3 Pro’s features yet, but the company posted a video clip on its Weibo account, teasing support for 30-meter sea diving.

The Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro won’t be the only star of the April 28 event since Huawei will also unveil the Mate Xs 2 foldable smartphone at the event.

Huawei hasn’t divulged much about the Mate Xs 2 and the Watch GT 3 Pro, but with the official unveiling just two days away, there’s not much waiting to know all about these products.

Smartphones made for gaming come with some serious hardware, flashy design, active cooling, and sometimes extra buttons to improve the overall gaming experience on a mobile phone. What if you were to create your own mobile phone? That’s what the folks over on YouTube channel Geekerwan set out to do. Well, kind of. These guys took a Xiaomi Mi 9 with a Snapdragon 855, and significantly modified both hardware and software to make it a mobile gaming monster.

The idea is that a three-year-old flagship smartphone has enough horsepower to run modern mobile games and can be bought second-hand quite cheaply. In this video, the Mi 9 with a cracked back was only bought for CNY 700 (roughly $107) and is perfect for converting it into a gaming phone. Basically, anyone wanting to find a cheap smartphone to do this should look for a Snapdragon 855-powered device with moderate community support should do nicely – something like a OnePlus 7T.

The Mi 9’s 3,300 mAh battery isn’t going to cut it. So the battery is tripled by connecting them in parallel so the phone now technically has a 9,900 mAh battery – this will require modding the software to tell it how large the battery is. This involves knowledge with unlocking bootloaders and flashing aftermarket software.

Check out this souped up Xiaomi Mi 9 turned beastly gaming phone

The next step is to overclock and overvolt the chipset. It is possible to flash an aftermarket kernel to allow the display to run at frame rates higher than the factory intended.

The cost of these tweaks is heat. A custom thermal management system will be needed. In its factory state, the smartphone is not optimized for extreme heat, which is why the camera module was removed and a heatsink with 40mm cooling fan was added with thermal compound. Of course, powering the fan will require tapping into the battery. In this case, a DC to DC converter board is added to regulate current to output 5V to the cooling fan. Switches were also added to regulate the fan speed.

Everything is wrapped into an SLA 3D-printed case to house the new brick, complete with universal bracket to mount that onto a game controller. You can see the results of benchmarks and stability testing in the video.

Spoiler Alert: It doesn’t disappoint. Genshin Impact – a heavily graphic-intensive game – averaged 39 frames per second before modifications with the highest settings. With the new mods, an average of 50fps was achieved.

iQOO Neo6 SE specs leak

iQOO Neo6 SE specs leak

vivo sub-brand iQOO has recently unveiled the Neo6, but like last year the Neo family will have multiple members, according to the latest rumor from China. The first one to become official, at some point soon, will be the iQOO Neo6 SE.

This model is allegedly going to sport a 6. 62-inch FHD+ 120Hz OLED flat touchscreen with a centered single hole-punch for the selfie camera, and it will be powered by the aging Snapdragon 870 high-end SoC.

iQOO Neo6iQOO Neo6

The phone is said to come with a 4,700 mAh battery which will have support for 80W fast charging. Thus, the display, battery capacity and charging speed will all match the Neo6. The main difference seems to be in the chipset used, as the Neo6 goes with the most recent top dog from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

On the other hand, camera specs for the Neo6 SE are yet to leak, so there may be some cuts there as well in order to hit what will undoubtedly be an even more affordable price point with this one.

Nintendo delays Super Mario Bros. movie to 2023

Nintendo delays Super Mario Bros. movie to 2023

Nintendo’s animated movie based on Super Mario Bros. won’t make its previously announced 2022 release date. Nintendo and Illumination now say the Mario movie will be released next spring instead.

Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto, a game designer and artist, made the announcement on Twitter , via Nintendo of America’s Account. Miyamoto said he and his co-producer on the film, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, made the decision to delay their Mario movie.

“After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023-April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America,” Miyamoto said. “My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.”

The Super Mario Bros. movie was slated for a Dec. 21 theatrical release. Its new April 2023 release puts it out of the way of another highly anticipated film, James Cameron’s Avatar 2, which is supposed to hit theaters on Dec. 16. Mario fans aching for cinematic Super Mario Bros. content to watch will have to tide themselves over on the existing, live-action Super Mario Bros. movie or Nintendo’s 1986 anime until next spring.

Nintendo announced plans to make an animated Mario movie with Illumination, the studio behind Minions and Despicable Me, in 2018.

The movie, which does not have an officially announced title, features the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. Rounding out the cast are Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. The movie is written by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru) and co-directed by Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go! ), Aaron Horvath (Teen Titans Go To the Movies).

Sony PlayStation 5 gets variable refresh rate support

Sony PlayStation 5 gets variable refresh rate support

Sony today announced that it is bringing variable refresh rate to the PlayStation 5 console. This feature will roll out via a software update that will be made available worldwide this week. The feature was first revealed by Sony in November 2020.

VRR on the PlayStation 5 can be enabled through an option in the Screen and Video settings. You can apply it to supported games only or force it to work for all by selecting an alternative option. This option can cause unexpected visual effects, and it may not work for all games.

Sony PlayStation 5 gets variable refresh rate support

Sony announced a list of titles that will be getting native VRR support in the coming weeks. This includes Astro’s Playroom, Call of Duty: Vanguard, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Destiny 2, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, DIRT 5, Godfall, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Resident Evil Village, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, and Tribes of Midgard.

More games will be getting native support for VRR through a game update. This feature is likely to be available at launch in the future games.

Unfortunately, there is a catch with this announcement, and that is the feature only being compatible with televisions and monitors that support HDMI 2.1. While VRR support was officially added to the HDMI spec with version 2. 1, television and monitor manufacturers have enabled the feature even on HDMI 2.0 models.

This is a rather bizarre decision from Sony as the Xbox Series X/S consoles and even the Xbox One X/S consoles have supported VRR even on HDMI 2.0 displays. Sony’s decision will result in only the handful of users with HDMI 2. 1 displays being able to use this feature, with the vast majority of the users being left out in the cold.

For those who are curious, variable refresh rate allows a compatible monitor to update only when either the GPU or console outputs a frame. The display refresh rate will always be in sync with what is being displayed. This eliminates screen tearing and does not require vsync to activate. It also helps reduce frame time inconsistencies caused by the display’s slow refresh rate. The end result is a smoother, consistent and more responsive gameplay experience.

For those of you with a PlayStation 5 and an HDMI 2. 1 display, you would be able to experience this later this week.

The iPad still needs a Weather app – Here’s how it should look

The iPad still needs a Weather app – Here’s how it should look

For some strange reason there aren’t any native iOS apps on iPad, such as the Calculator or the Weather app. While there are no hints that the iPad will finally get a Weather app this year with the upcoming iPadOS 16, this new concept shows exactly how the app should look on the big screen.

The concept created by designer Timo Weigelt gives us an idea of how the Weather app on the iPhone would look on the iPad. This is not the first time someone has created a concept for an iPad Weather app, but Weigelt told 9to5Mac that most concepts don’t follow Apple’s design guidelines, which makes them unrealistic.

That’s why Weigelt came up with this concept, which is largely based on what the Weather app currently offers on the iPhone. It looks just like what Apple would do.

Since the iPad has a larger screen, the app would show more information at the same time. For instance, when in landscape, the Weather app would show a sidebar with all the user’s favorite cities as well as a more detailed forecast. The app designer also has some fresh ideas.

The concept brings “Jiggle Mode” to the Weather app, so that users can rearrange the information panels in any way they like. Weigelt suggests the app have both weather notifications as well as a macOS version.

With iPadOS 15, Apple finally let users add a full Weather widget to the iPad home screen. The widget will redirect you to The Weather Channel’s site in Safari once you click it. Perhaps this year the company will finally give iPad users what they really deserve.

You can check out the full concept on Behance.

Apple taps same legal team as Starbucks for unionization fight ahead

Apple taps same legal team as Starbucks for unionization fight ahead

There were many stories last week about the plans of Apple Store workers to organize. Although Apple has not yet made a statement regarding its plans to unionize, the company is already working with antiunion lawyers to stop them.

Recent instances of union talks

Apple Store workers at Grand Central in New York City are starting to unionize. These employees seek to improve the quality of working conditions, earn more vacation time and better retirement, and secure a $30-per-hour minimum wage. A few days later news came out that the employees of the Apple Store in Atlanta would be the first to vote in a union election. Employees there ask for similar benefits as the New York City store.

Littler Mendelson also represents Starbucks

The Verge reports that Apple is working with San Francisco-based Littler Mendelson law firm to de-escalate the union fights. Littler Mendelson represents Starbucks to prevent its union partners organizing. The firm previously helped McDonald’s in 2014 when workers were calling for $15 an hour wages.

The management of Apple is attempting to stop their employees exercising their rights to join unions by keeping Littler Mendelson, a notorious union-busting company,” stated Sara Steffens (CWA Secretary-Treasurer). The workers at Starbucks (another Littler client) aren’t buying it, and so will Apple workers.

An anonymous Apple Store employee in New York told The Verge that the company has been spreading anti-union messaging during meetings. “There’s a lot of misinformation that’s been spread trying to scare the masses,” the employee said. They are panicking .”

Apple declined to comment to The Verge regarding hiring Littler Mendelson for its anti-unionization efforts.

BioWare contractors who do QA work on Mass Effect and more want a union

BioWare contractors who do QA work on Mass Effect and more want a union

Workers at Keywords Studios, which have in the past supported BioWare’s quality assurance (QA) efforts, are moving toward unionization according to paperwork filed in Canada. Polygon confirmed the filing with the Alberta Labour Relations Board Monday.

An account called KeywordsUnitedYEG posted a notice on Reddit’s Alberta forum, also on Monday, noting that workers had organized under the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada Union, Local No. 401 to become the certified bargaining agent for a unit of employees of Keywords Studios B.C. Union workers could test the next Mass Effect and Dragon Age games.

Keywords is a company that provides “long-term and cost-efficient video game testing solutions” for other developers, according to its website. Some of the partners include Square Enix, Electronic Arts and Blizzard Entertainment. According to the company’s official site, it provided QA for the most recent Dragon Age and Mass Effect titles — which are BioWare’s most successful series.

This represents another step towards unionization within the gaming industry. Some studios are willing to join forces despite resistance from management and publishers. Raven Software, a support QA studio that worked on the popular Call of Duty franchise, is also in the early stages of a unionization effort.

Polygon reached out to United Food and Commercial Workers Canada Union Local No. 401 as well as Keywords, BioWare, and Electronic Arts for additional comment.

Man uses AirTags and PowerPoint presentation to ask airline for his lost bags [U]

Man uses AirTags and PowerPoint presentation to ask airline for his lost bags [U]

Since Apple introduced AirTag last year, multiple interesting stories related to the item tracker have been shared on the web. A man lost his luggage on a trip to his wedding used AirTags with a PowerPoint presentation in order to request his bag.

Elliot Sharod and his wife, Helen, were flying back to the U.K. from their wedding in South Africa on April 17. The couple purchased tickets that included stopovers at Abu Dhabi and Frankfurt. However, they were forced to change their flight schedule due to the pandemic. Their luggage was not returned to the U.K. after they made it.

Luckily, Sharod placed an AirTag inside each bag so that he could track them on the map. The Find My app enabled the couple to track their bags on a map and discovered that the luggage they had taken to Frankfurt was not with them to London.

AerLingus was the airline that operated the flight and stated that Sharod would receive the bags at his home. Only two bags of the three were delivered to Sharod’s home that night.

After multiple calls and emails to Aer Lingus without a solution, Sharod then complained on Twitter, but even that didn’t seem enough. That’s when Sharod took a different approach: he posted videos and even made a PowerPoint presentation with screenshots from the Find My app showing exactly where his lost bag was.

He told CNN that the bag was located in two different places in Pimlico, and it has never moved since April 21. However, the airline was unable to find it, so Sharod contacted the police as he now believes the bag was stolen.

Hi @AerLingus – perhaps a PowerPoint presentation on the journey you’ve sent my lost/stolen bag on will help?

I’ve told you multiple times where it is and you’re doing nothing about it.

This has been a shocking experience with you pic.twitter.com/105BdEM7MU

— Avios Adventurer (@aviosAdventurer) April 22, 2022

While this saga doesn’t seem to be nearing an end, it’s always interesting to see how useful AirTag can actually be in situations like this. Hopefully, Sharod will be able to get his lost bag back.

Update: With the help of the police and thanks to the AirTag’s location, Sharod was able to get his bag back.

I have the bag. Thank you to the airline.

Me + met police = result

We’re giving you PowerPoints for this presentation! You’ve got this in the bag. pic.twitter.com/tVrIXpMpWw
