Taking Self-Expression to the Next Level With a Truly Bespoke Experience

Taking Self-Expression to the Next Level With a Truly Bespoke Experience – Samsung Global Newsroom

Since its formation, one of the core principles behind Samsung Electronics’ Bespoke has been enriching lives through creative designs. To that end, Samsung has been collaborating with designers and artists and encouraging user participation through worldwide design competitions. Now, with Samsung’s latest design experiences, Bespoke is taking customization to the next level providing consumers the freedom to create designs that truly reflect their personality.

Read on to learn more about the design journey of Bespoke and how, through creative collaboration, the lineup has become a medium of self-expression for both artists and consumers.

Global by Design

Creative inspiration comes in many forms. As a part of the ongoing exploration to discover new design ideas, Samsung has been taking cues from artists around the world. Starting in Korea in 2019, Samsung collaborated with famed designers, such as furniture designer Seungji Mun, interior designer Hasuk Jang and space and strategy designers Jong Kim and Teo Yang. Together, these visionaries led the original design campaign highlighting Bespoke appliances’ adaptable and customizable features.

From there, the inspiration for Bespoke design ventured outside Korea. In 2021, French illustrator Thibaud Hérem and American artist Andy Rementer introduced European architecture and pop art to Bespoke refrigerator designs, both of which are available globally today. Furthermore, earlier this year, Alex Proba, founder of Brooklyn and Portland-based design studio StudioPROBA, created her own limited-edition Bespoke refrigerator panels. Proba used colors and shapes found in nature to express joy through her panel designs Proba’s panels are also available for consumers to enjoy. Through collaborations such as these, artists have been lending a hand in evolving the Bespoke design language by infusing their own artistic styles.

Global inspiration for design also came in the form of cultural representation. In the United States, Samsung introduced panel designs for the 4-Door Flex™ refrigerator based on the stars and stripes of the American flag in celebration of the nation’s Independence Day on the July 4.

Across the pond, even the Queen of England was cited as a source of inspiration. In May, Samsung released limited edition panels with the Union Jack flag designs for Bespoke users in the U.K. in celebration of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

Made by Consumers, for Consumers

A key aspect of expanding the Bespoke design ethos has been listening to consumers. For instance, Samsung launched a worldwide design contest, providing consumers with Bespoke refrigerator panels as a blank canvas for self-expression.

The contests started in Korea with #BESPOKE Rendezvous in 2019. Samsung took to the trendy streets of Hongdae, Seoul with a 3-day pop-up event to launch the design contest, joined by celebrities and performers. Attendees got to see first-hand the modularity of the Bespoke refrigerators in various configurations and were encouraged to create their own designs in exploring the freedom of design. Also in attendance at the event, world-famous graffiti artist Artime Joe of street art team Stick Up Kids performed a live drawing on refrigerator panels.

With more than a thousand design entries covering everything from scenes from Korea’s history to modern abstract art, the contest concluded with the top three winners being announced at the #ProjectPRISM lifestyle showroom at the Samsung Digital Plaza Gangnam location. Later the winners were also invited to showcase their work to designers from around the world at the Milan Furniture Fair.

The contests also made their mark in September 2021, with contests held in Singapore and globally from the U.K., followed by Vietnam in December. Following those, Samsung also launched a design contest in the U.A.E. earlier this year.

In Singapore, Samsung commissioned local artists Candice Phang, Michael Mindflyer, Tan Zi Xi as well as furniture retailer Commune and interior design firm Rooot Studio to create panel designs as inspiration ahead of the #BespokeDesignedByYou contest. After displaying their works, the three artists – Phang, Mindflyer and Xi – also participated as judges in the contest, where they selected a grand prize winner.

In September, Samsung with Wallpaper* magazine in the U.K. hosted a global design contest, drawing in 1,581 submissions. The top 50 designs were selected by a panel of judges consisting of Samsung executives, Wallpaper*’s editor-in-chief as well as local artists. From there, the entries were narrowed down to a hopeful 15 through a popular vote from consumers. The winning designs were displayed at the Samsung K.X. space in London throughout 2021.

Samsung, in Vietnam, launched the Bespoke Be You design competition working with the Vietnam Design Association (VDAS) and a community of design students. Participants were pushed to the limits of their creativity and tasked to create kitchen spaces showcasing the endless design possibilities of Bespoke. Ten design experts and professors from the fields of interior design and architecture as well as representatives of organizations, international design associations and media agencies served as judges for this competition.

▲ [Bespoke Be You : “An house” by Bùi Ngọc Sơn]

In the U.A.E., Samsung presented the #InspireByTheNation contest, which celebrated the nation and its uniqueness with panel designs that reflected important cultural identifiers such as landscapes, foods and architecture. Local food and lifestyle influencers Jacob Abrian and Nisrine EL Lababidi, as well as renowned Chef Alexandros Sperxos, participated as expert judges selecting the top three winners for the event.

At its core, Bespoke has developed as a brand identity capable of transcending geographies and cultures. Thanks to sourcing design inspiration from artists worldwide, Bespoke has become a reflection of the diversity and creativity of its consumer base.

Beyond the Possibility of Home Décor

In addition to design, the role of technology is also pushed to the limits with Bespoke. In 2021, Samsung introduced the Bespoke Creator AI color recommendation service in Korea, which helps make appliance design more accessible through the use of A.I. technology. The A.I. analyzes photos consumers upload of their homes to develop color recommendations that fit best in their environment.

Bringing True Bespoke Customization

Building on the success of the collaborations and competitions, Samsung launched MyBespoke offering North American users a chance to express their individualism by designing their own Bespoke refrigerator panels from start to finish.

To start things off, three influencers took part in designing panels on the Bespoke French Door refrigerator. Later this year, MyBespoke will be opened to the North American public, marking the first time users will have the opportunity to create truly one-of-a-kind panels for Bespoke refrigerators.

By taking cues from artists, using advanced technology and launching a customizable design experience, Samsung hopes to transform traditional home appliances into statement pieces. Samsung constantly innovates to offer consumer appliances that make home life more personal and convenient. Read more about Bespoke appliances and their inspiring designs at Samsung.com.

iOS 16 accessibility features: Three small things that make a big difference

iOS 16 accessibility features: Three small things that make a big difference

Apple has introduced three iOS 16 accessibility features that might sound like small things, but one 9to5Mac reader says they will make a big difference to his independence.

Colin Hughes has been calling for three improvements, and says he is delighted to learn that Apple listened, and that all three are present in the first beta of iOS 16 …

Background

Apple has long been a leader in accessibility features, and things like instructing Siri to answer a phone call has made a real difference to the lives of many people with disabilities.

However, some key related features were missing, causing frustration by disabled people. One 9to5Mac reader has long been offering his feedback on Apple’s accessibility features, explaining both what works for him, and what doesn’t.

Colin Hughes is quadriplegic, having no use of his legs and very limited use of his arms, and first shared his experiences with us back in 2020. He has since regularly commented on accessibility updates, and noted that Apple has read and acted on these pieces.

  • How Apple’s technology helps someone who is quadriplegic – and how it doesn’t
  • Quadriplegic Apple user rates iOS 15 and watchOS 8 for accessibility
  • Apple quietly adds valuable new feature to Mac Voice Control, but more work needed
  • iPhone 13 Face ID failing with CPAP masks; worked with older phones

A number of these issues have now been addressed, and Apple advised him that three more of his accessibility requests have been met in iOS 16.

Siri end call support

You could ask Siri for an answer to an incoming phone call but, bizarrely enough, not to terminate the call. Apple has now fixed this, in the first beta of iOS 16, as Hughes notes:

I thought this was a ridiculous way to use Siri on iPhones. For years, users have been able to place calls by simply saying “Hey Siri”, call …”,, but there hasn’t been a “Hey Siri,” command until now. It lead to a lot of daily frustration as I can’t press the red button on the iPhone screen to hang up a phone call, so this prompted me to campaign for it. I’m really glad Apple has listened and resolved the contradiction! It will hopefully also prove useful to others who have a lot on their plates.

Auto-answer Calls setup

Some users with disabilities find it easier to simply set their iPhone to auto-answer incoming calls.

However, one of the great ironies is that a feature designed to be useful to, for example, quadriplegic people, required them to do something they couldn’t: Go into settings and flip an on-screen toggle. Hughes said that although it may seem like an insignificant thing, this is actually quite important.

I always found it beyond ironic that a feature for people who can’t touch the iPhone screen, or Watch face, required you to do exactly that to turn auto answer on and off. Apple should enable Siri to switch auto answer on/off by saying “Hey Siri, turn on auto-answer”. I am delighted the company has listened and the ability is coming in both iOS 16 and WatchOS 9.

I don’t want auto answer on all the time and I want to be able to turn it on and off myself without having to ask a carer for help. Personal independence is so important to disabled people, practically and psychologically, and technology can really help with this. This feature may sound niche but it is massive for people like me.

Announce notifications without earphones

The iPhone has an “announce notification” function that allows Siri to read aloud messages such as incoming iMessages. But this only worked with AirPods or Beats headphones. Apple now has this fixed, and it also works with MfI Hearing Aids as well as the iPhone’s speaker.

Hughes says this again is something which might sound incredibly minor, but can be a huge benefit.

Announce Notifications has been a real boon for me since the feature was Introduced last year. I use it a lot to keep in touch and stay connected. Even though my iPhone is not always with me, I can still use it to communicate with my friends and family on the move.

However, until now, the announce notifications feature only worked when wearing AirPods or Beats buds. Announce notifications can be very useful even if you don’t have AirPods. My iPhone can be charged while it is on the charging stand at my desk or on my bedside table. Apple has been very responsive to my request to expand the functionality of the iPhone speaker.

I am really pleased to learn Announce notifications is being brought to both Made for iPhone hearing aids as well as over the device speaker for users who want to be able to hear their notifications read out even when their AirPods are not in their ear. I understand there won’t be trigger-less followup support, but for the phone speaker you will be able to act on the notification by saying “Hey Siri”.

I’ll meet Hughes in the near future to film a video that shows how smart home technology and Siri commands have transformed Hughes’ life.

Apple WWDC 2022 is just around the corner: What Product Designers Need to Know

Apple WWDC 2022 is just around the corner: What Product Designers Need to Know

WWDC is always an exciting time for Apple fans. Although the event is primarily aimed at developers, hence the name, there is always something that can be gleaned from what Apple reveals, both on stage and sometimes behind closed doors. There may be a brand new product to look forward to in the coming months, but the main focus of this event will remain on the new experiences offered by the latest versions of macOS and iOS. Although whispers are more muted and limited than usual this year, they don’t seem to have any shortage of excitement. There are still some interesting items that may be revealed this Monday. Some of these could affect product designers.

Designer: Ian Zelbo (rendersbyian)

2022 MacBook Air Colors

Apple broke tradition last year when it announced the new iMacs that came in a variety of colors. As a company best known for its almost clinical choice of colors, this unexpected move seemed like a nod to the candy-colored iMac G3 of old, as well as the more colorful iPhone 5c. Given this sudden change in direction, it wasn’t surprising when rumors started popping up about the MacBook Air getting the same colorful treatment.

Unfortunately, the last-minute word from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is less than encouraging. Despite hopes, dreams, rumors, and drool-worthy renders, the journalist and industry tipster claims that those reports were “probably exaggerated.” Instead, he believes the 2022 MacBook Air will still come in the same trio of hues, namely space gray, silver, and gold. He claims that gold will look closer to champagne.

Though the absence of colorful options might be disappointing, the expected arrival of a notch might be even more devastating. Although the design is still being debated online, Apple may not back down. Either way, the notch has forced many apps to design around it, changing the user experience, for better or for worse.

AR Headset

The Metaverse isn’t ready yet for Apple, at least not in the way that most people presume the Metaverse to be. Apple believes in mixed and augmented reality and is developing its AR platform. It’s just not ready to come out with its own headset yet, not even a prototype, so AR hopefuls will have to wait yet another year, or possibly later this year.

That doesn’t mean Apple will be silent on the AR front, though. Instead, it will be focusing on arming developers with tools to help them adapt their apps to an AR future. Apple has already laid the foundation for this, making it possible for iPads and iPhones to be windows into the mashup between the real world and virtual. New tools are expected to be announced at WWDC, including one that gives apps the ability to react to QR codes. This, for example, could kick off an AR experience after a user scans a QR code printed on a piece of IKEA furniture.

iOS 16 Always-on Display

The next version of iOS 16 will reportedly gain a capability that the Apple Watch has long had. The Always-On Display, or AOD allows the iPhone to continue running even when it isn’t seeing anything. However, this will only consume very little power. It can also only light up the specific pixels required to display a notification or some widget with important information.

Designer: Apple

It’s a feature that’s a long time coming, but it remains to be seen whether it will be a battery-saver or a battery-drainer. Accessory makers, particularly for cases and docks, as well as app developers, might try to take advantage of this new capability by allowing the iPhone to function as a smart display when docked or by showing only a portion of the screen through a cutout of a folio case.

iPadOS 16 Multitasking

The next version of iOS for iPads will take Apple’s tablets one step closer to becoming a full computer replacement. iPadOS 16 might include more powerful multitasking features, including one that will allow owners to run apps in floating windows that they can resize and move around, similar to desktop platforms like macOS and Windows. There seems to be a bit of controversy regarding this feature and its impact on the iPad as well as the relationship between macOS and iPadOS, but it is generally being welcomed by iPad Pro owners who have been using the tablet as their bread and butter device.

The iPad Pro has long been a favorite among designers of all trades as a mobile workstation that can almost replace their laptops. These upcoming multitasking improvements could become a game-changer for them, allowing them more control and freedom in their workflows. It is likely that developers will also need to adopt these new features. The user experience could be drastically altered for these products in the near future.

Meta’s Apple Watch competitor now on pause as company focuses on AR/VR

Meta’s Apple Watch competitor now on pause as company focuses on AR/VR

Last year, 9to5Mac reported that Meta was working on a new smartwatch with built-in camera to compete with the Apple Watch. Now, the Facebook-parent company has halted development of this wearable as it focuses on the metaverse.

According to Bloomberg, the devices that had Wi-Fi, built-in Spotify, and GPS support have been halted, but Meta is still working on other wearables for the wrist, said a person with knowledge of the matter.

The device, which has been in development for at least two years, was designed to include several features common in other smartwatches, including activity tracking, music playback and messaging. A prototype of the now halted device includes dual-cameras, a key differentiator from market leaders like the Apple Watch. One camera was located below the display and another sat on the backside against the wearer’s wrist, according to images and video of a prototype seen by Bloomberg.

With the second camera, users would remove the watch from its strap to quickly take pictures, but “the presence of the camera caused issues with another feature for translating nerve signals from the wrist into digital commands.”

Different from the Apple Watch that focuses on fitness and well-being, Meta’s smartwatch would have the potential to be part of its metaverse future. “Meta has touted the benefits of electromyography as a way of using a person’s hands as a ‘controller’ for other devices, including those geared toward the metaverse,” Bloomberg reports.

Apart from that, the Apple Watch competitor would not have a proper app store. Instead, it would need a Facebook account to handle all possible apps. Some of the examples were Spotify, WhatsApp, Instagram, daily activity tracking, workouts, the photo gallery, calendar, and more.

The Apple Watch competitor was originally targeted for a release in 2023, with a price point around $349.

The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer launching as a stand-alone game

The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer launching as a stand-alone game

[source_video]

The Last of Us Part 2’s previously announced multiplayer component will launch as a stand-alone game, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann announced during Summer Game Fest on Thursday.

Druckmann said Naughty Dog wasn’t ready to reveal much about the game so far, but he did have a piece of concept art to share, showing two characters overlooking an apocalyptic city. Druckmann did say that the stand-alone multiplayer game will be as big as the developer’s single-player games, “and in some ways bigger.”

“It’s got a story. The way we’re telling the story is very unique to this game,” Druckmann said. “It has a brand-new cast of characters. It takes place in another part of the United States.”

No release date was given, but Druckmann said more information will come next year.

The Last of Us Part 2 was originally announced with a multiplayer component, like the first game. Somewhere along the way, things changed: In 2019, Naughty Dog confirmed that multiplayer wasn’t coming.

You want to browse TikTok at work? This NFC Tag lets you block distracting apps and notifications

Browsing TikTok while working? This NFC Tag lets you block distracting apps and notifications

Have you ever opened TikTok or Instagram, closed it, and just within a second later, opened it again? You’ll be shocked to learn that social media addiction can occur involuntary. You might like a photo without actually observing it, or double tap on a TikTok or IG reel just out of habit without really registering the fact. It’s muscle memory… and the Unpluq Tag hopes to break it. The Unpluq Tag is a physical gatekeeper to your digital world – if you’re the kind of person (like I am) who checks IG 30-40 times a day, or spends hours on TikTok without actually realizing it, that’s where the Unpluq Tag comes in. Designed to be an NFC tag that sits around your keychain or somewhere on your table, the Unpluq App + Tag blocks addictive non-productive apps of your choice on your phone and only allows you to open them by actually tapping the NFC tag on your phone. It works in the same way as manually unlocking certain apps and entering a keyword to unlock them. Well, there are a few clever differences…

Designers: Jorn Rigter & Tim Smits

Click Here to Buy Now: $44 $64 (31% off). Hurry, only 2 left!

The Unpluq Tag blocks non-essential apps and hides unimportant notifications, keeping distractions away while you work, play, meditate, or meet friends/family. However, since everyone benefits from periodic breaks and rewards after being productive, the Unpluq Tag gives you short bursts of access to your favorite apps, simply by tapping the NFC tag on your phone. It works like a pass-through, giving you an opportunity to have fun before returning to work. When you physically tap the tag, it becomes a conscious decision as opposed to when people normally open social media unconsciously or subconsciously. One aspect of social media addiction is broken by this agency.

Decide which Apps distract you, and at what time.

Wait, how is this any different from just locking and unlocking your apps? You can lock your apps manually by entering a passcode. This is more an anti-snooping than a discipline feature. Typing out the passcode to unlock an application can be intuitive. Android and iOS even have ‘focus modes’ that allow you to automatically snooze non-essential notifications while working, but those features don’t block the apps. What the Unpluq Tag does is bundle them together into one singular device that actively makes sure you don’t slip into old patterns of behavior. What’s the best thing? The best part? You can conceal your Unpluq Tag and give it to someone you know so that Instagram doesn’t distract from work or school. There’s no way to cheat your way out of the system.

The Unpluq team’s pitch isn’t new – the company also launched the Unpluq Key in 2020, which was an actual hardware device that you had to plug into your phone. In its newer avatar, the Unpluq Tag is smaller and doesn’t have a port. The device works with NFC technology, and interaction can be done by simply tapping. The device works in tandem with the Unpluq app which simultaneously blocks access to distracting apps and snoozes their notifications. You can set your apps to get locked whenever you want, and even program a schedule, so your distractions routinely disappear on their own during work hours. Unpluq can detect apps that need to be blocked automatically, but it allows you to choose which apps to block while you are busy.

The Unpluq Tag can be attached to your keychain or attached to your backpack. For $44, you can grab yourself a single Unpluq Tag, which also comes with a 1-year free subscription to the Unpluq app, which also gives you stats at the end of the day to show you how much time you saved. Go ahead, block all distractions, and unlock your mind’s true potential!

Inflexion Games’ first-person fantasy survival game Nightingale appeared Thursday at Summer Game Fest with a new trailer showcasing how its card system mixes with the 3D world.

“Nightingale “is a PVE-based survival game that can be played alone or with friends.” Inflexion stated on YouTube. “Build, craft, fight and explore as you venture through mystical portals into a variety of amazing and fantastical realms.”

Nightingale is described as a shared world, player-versus-environment game where players will fight and craft through the Victorian fantasy world and visit plenty of different realms. (The cards, it seems, are very important for realm-hopping. )

Judging from the trailer, you will find a variety of pretty, eldritch costumes, which can make it very fashionable while fighting off monsters. Realmwalkers are players who can work together to fight Fae (humanity’s magic rivals).

Nightingale was first revealed in 2021 at The Game Awards, and is being created by veterans of Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
