‘Massive’ Facebook hiring freeze and 40% decline in stock price is partly Apple’s fault, says CFO

‘Massive’ Facebook hiring freeze and 40% decline in stock price is partly Apple’s fault, says CFO

A “massive” Facebook hiring freeze has been announced, which the company says will affect “almost every team across the company.”

Parent company Meta told employees that four factors were behind the decision, and that Apple’s introduction of App Tracking Transparency was the first of these …

Business Insider got access to a memo sent to all employees by chief financial officer David Wehner. In it, he lists four factors responsible for slowing revenue growth and increased costs. Apple’s introduction of App Tracking Transparency is the first one listed.

  • “Loss of signal from iOS changes”
  • The war in Ukraine
  • The “general macroeconomic environment”
  • Easing of lockdowns resulting in people spending less time online

The first point relates to App Tracking Transparency (ATT). This makes it harder for advertisers to target consumers with specific interests, and harder for the company to prove that Facebook ads are effective.

Facebook has repeatedly complained about the impact to its ad model, disingenuously claiming that it was concerned about small businesses, and not the multi-billion dollar impact to its own revenue. The memo, however, tells a different story.

We’re facing headwinds including slower revenue growth than anticipated at the start of the year. This is due to a number of factors including the loss of signal from iOS changes, business challenges resulting from the war in Ukraine, and the general macroeconomic environment. Also […] as the pandemic restrictions have lifted, more people are spending time offline and returning to pre-pandemic spending patterns.

This was followed by a memo from global recruitment head Miranda Kalinowski, who said that engineering roles would be significantly hit.

We’re still working out what this means for each org, but this will affect hiring goals for almost every team across the company. Based on this refreshed guidance, we know we need to adjust our hiring targets across the board starting with Eng[ineering].

She says there will be an immediate pause on most engineering hiring, with no further job offers to be made except for roles labelled ML IC5+ and IC7+, which would appear to describe more senior roles in machine learning.

As is usual when large companies deliver bad news, Wehner’s memo tries to end on an upbeat note, including the company’s attempts to use AI to replace the data lost through ATT.

We’re in a strong position with a healthy business, and we feel optimistic about the opportunities to re-accelerate growth, particularly through unlocking new revenue streams through Reels monetization, incorporating AI into our ads system to overcome signal loss from iOS changes, growing business messaging and bringing the metaverse to life. But we also have to be responsible by responding to the unpredictable market forces that have put pressure on our business over the past few months. In practice, this is a valuable forcing function to make sure we’re prioritizing more effectively and are all working on the most important things.

Apple has always said that the move is about allowing customers to choose to protect their own privacy, and only impacts on Facebook’s business if consumers opt out of tracking.

We believe that this is a simple matter of standing up for our users. Users should know when their data is being collected and shared across other apps and websites — and they should have the choice to allow that or not. App Tracking Transparency in iOS 14 does not require Facebook to change its approach to tracking users and creating targeted advertising, it simply requires they give users a choice.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 to come in Beige, Z Flip4 will have Blue variant

Samsung is bringing new colors for the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 smartphones, an industry insider posted on Twitter. Ross Young, DSCC confirmed that the Korean manufacturer will no longer use the Green color scheme and will instead introduce a Beige variant of the Fold as well as a Light Blue Flip.

The Black and Gray choices for Z Fold4 are not new – we had them on the Z Fold3 was announced, although they were called Phantom Black and Phantom Silver. The clamshell shows that Black is becoming lighter and will eventually be called Gray.

Last year Samsung had some exclusive paint jobs for devices, purchased from its online store, and some users even had the option to mix and match panels with hinges. We expect these exclusive deals and features to remain because they bring the Korean maker ahead of its competitors, especially when more and more foldable phones are arriving on the market.

Qualcomm unveils Wi-Fi 7 platforms for access points and home routers

Qualcomm unveils Wi-Fi 7 platforms for access points and home routers

Qualcomm announced the arrival of Wi-Fi 7 Networking Pro Series – a lineup of Wi-Fi chips for enterprise access points, premium home routers and advanced mesh systems. They offer up to 33 Gbps quad-band connectivity over 16 streams, more stable connection and minimized interference.

The four platforms part of this series support much wider 320MHz channels over 2. 4GHz, 5Hz, and 6GHz spectrums.

Qualcomm unveils Wi-Fi 7 platforms for advanced access points and home routers

It feels like Wi-Fi 6/6E arrived just yesterday, and while it was adopted in 2019 and 2020, companies are already gunning for the next-gen standard, dubbed by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 802.11be.

In short, this will enable multi-link operation (MLO), which allows you to use multiple radio links across different channels. There is also Adaptive Interface Puncturing (AIP) that discards slots of spectrum that are too congested.

All these new technologies from Qualcomm will allow for faster and better internet speeds in stadiums. Nick Kucharewski, VP and General Manager of Wireless Infrastructure and Networking at the San Diego company, said Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6 would be able to coexist for a long time as markets “mature and evolve”.

It is worth mentioning that while Qualcomm is paving the way for the next Wi-Fi standard, expectations are it won’t be certified before 2024, so we’ll have to wait a little bit more before mass adoption is a thing.

BOE OLED production for iPhone 13 halted

BOE OLED production for iPhone 13 halted

The OLED screen production for iPhone 13 by BOE, has been halted since February a new report claims. According to the Korean outlet The Elec, the design of the circuit width has been altered without prior authorization and Apple ordered its partner to halt production.

Apple halts OLED production by BOE for iPhone 13

The decline in production of OLED panels at BOE started with a shortage of display driver ICs, which BOE gets from LX Semicon – a South Korean semiconductor company that is also supplying LG Display. However, the more significant reason is the Chinese maker unilaterally changed the thin-film transistor, which would affect the internal architecture of the phone.

The report said that the issue was not a deterrent to the relationship between these companies. The Elec assumed Apple wants to keep its OLED suppliers diversified in order to reduce its dependence on Samsung and LG and have a better bargaining position. Expectations are BOE to manufacture screens for the upcoming iPhone 14, as its B11 factory in Sichuan is still in operation despite the lower production rate.

Leaked Dr. Dre video in 2014 almost put the deal between Apple and Beats in jeopardy

Leaked Dr. Dre video in 2014 almost put the deal between Apple and Beats in jeopardy

When Apple confirmed that it was acquiring Beats for $3 billion in 2014, the deal became news all over the world. However, Tripp Mickle’s book “After Steve” has now revealed that the deal between the two companies was almost put in jeopardy after a video of Dr. Dre was leaked on the web.

Back in 2014, before both companies confirmed the acquisition, there were multiple rumors about the negotiations. Apple’s obsession with secrecy means that no one can speak about the acquisition. But as detailed in a chapter of Mickle’s book (via iMore), the deal had been pretty much confirmed by a video.

Beats founder Dr. Dre was featured in a video that featured actor and singer Tyrese Gilbert. He celebrated Dr. Dre’s success as a hip-hop millionaire due to Apple’s purchase of Beats. Jimmy Iovine was also co-founder and CEO of Beats. He received an immediate call from his manager warning him that the incorrectly uploaded video had been posted to Facebook.

After the event, Apple CEO Tim Cook invited Dre & Iovine to Cupertino in private for a conversation. The book says that Cook was “disappointed,” but that he wouldn’t scrap the deal since he was convinced that acquiring Beats was the right thing to do.

Iovine was worried that Cook would endanger the deal. Cook displayed calmness instead of the angry and verbal curses that might have flowed out of Jobs at such a time. Cook told music executives that while he was disappointed in Dre’s outburst on social media, he still believed that Apple had bought Beats.

Even so, there were some consequences. The Beats acquisition was finalized for $200 million less than expected. Although there was speculation at the time that Beats Music subscriptions had lowered the price, Apple paid Beats less after Dr. Dre made a mistake.

Apple has acquired both Beats Electronics and Beats Music. While the company’s headphones are still available from Apple under the Beats brand, Beats Music has been incorporated into Apple Music.

After Steve: How Apple Became a Trillion-Dollar Company and Lost Its Soul revisits Apple’s last decade, just after Steve Jobs stepped down as CEO to take care of his health. For a more in-depth look at the publication, be sure to read 9to5Mac’s review by Zac Hall. The book is now available in stores.

Tony Fadell talks about Steve Jobs’ controversial decisions on iPod and iPhone development

Tony Fadell talks about Steve Jobs’ controversial decisions on iPod and iPhone development

Tony Fadell, also known as the father of the iPod, released his new book this week called Build, which tells the story behind his 30 years working in Silicon Valley companies. In an interview with CNBC, Fadell discussed the development stages of the iPod’s and iPhone’s early years and controversial Steve Jobs decisions.

No iPod for Windows users

Fadell was hired by Apple in 2001 to help the company develop its music strategy, which of course involved the iPod. As he mentioned in the interview, there had been multiple MP3 players before the iPod, and they had become quite popular. However, none of them were intuitive for people who “just wanted to play MP3s.”

The idea inside Apple was to bring that experience of MP3 players to the masses. After all, in the engineer’s words, “everyone loves music, the audience is everywhere.” However, unlike its competitors, the iPod had to be easy to use, with good battery life, fast data syncing, and support 1,000 songs.

According to Fadell this is one reason Apple chose FireWire over USB. While the original USB standard was super slow with speeds of up to 12 Mbps, FireWire was already able to transfer over 100 Mbps at the time. This decision was not made without another reason.

As some of you may already know, the first two generations of the iPod weren’t compatible with Windows PCs. To transfer music to the iPod, the user must have a Mac – this was Steve Jobs’ decision.

From day one, I said “We gotta make sure it’s going to work with Windows.” And he [Steve] said “Over my dead body, never.”

First generation iPod.

A little help from outside

Jobs believed that the iPod would convince Windows users to switch to the Mac. However, the number of users buying Macs because of the iPod was never significant. And of course, this also affected iPod sales as the product became much more expensive for those who didn’t have a Mac at home.

Even so, Steve Jobs opposed the idea that the product could be used with every PC. That’s when Fadell and the iPod team reached out to journalist Walt Mossberg, who was also a friend of Jobs, for help in convincing him to make the iPod compatible with Windows.

Fadell mentioned that Jobs didn’t want to be wrong, but Mossberg helped him see that opening up the iPod for Windows PCs would be the right way to make the product successful – and it turned out that Mossberg and Fadell were right.

Third-party apps on iPhone

It’s not news that Steve Jobs wasn’t in favor of the iPhone running third-party apps when the device was announced in 2007. Developers and corporates had a lot of requests for their apps once the iPhone was released.

Apple came up with the “sweet solution”, which was to encourage web app development that runs through Safari. Interestingly, Fadell revealed in the interview that the web app idea was highly supported by Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO at the time.

Web apps on iPhone and iPod touch.

Schmidt was on Apple’s board of directors, and he was also heavily involved in the development of the iPhone as it came with multiple Google services built in. Schmidt was “a bit emotional” after seeing web apps run on an iPhone for the first-time.

However, as we know, web apps weren’t that good. Steve Jobs also saw an opportunity to create the App Store to help people “lock in” to the ecosystem.

Wrap up

In the entire interview of one hour, Fadell shared details about his personal and professional life. After leaving Apple in 2008, he founded his own company “Nest Labs” to create smart home devices, which was later acquired by Google.
