Apple drops trade-in value for Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch models, but iPhone unaffected

Apple drops trade-in value for Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch models, but iPhone unaffected

If you’re waiting to trade in your old Mac, iPad, or Apple Watch for a new model, bad news. Apple has lowered the estimated prices for all of these products, which means you’ll get less when trading in them for a new product by the company. The good news? iPhone’s value has not changed.

In addition, some Samsung and Google smartphones also saw their trade-in value lowered (via MacRumors). Apple Watch Series 2, which could get up to $20 in trade-in value, is no longer accepted.

MacBook Pro: up to $1,000 (previously up to $1,350)

MacBook Air: up to $400 (previously up to $490)

MacBook: up to $220 (previously up to $315)

iMac Pro: up to $1,500 (previously $2,135)

iMac: up to $850 (previously up to $1,200)

Mac Pro: Up to $2,000 (previously $2,720)

iPad Pro: up to $655 (previously $680)

iPad Air: up to $190 (previously up to $335)

iPad: up to $190 (previously up to $200)

iPad mini: up to $200 (previously up to $205)

Apple Watch Series 6: up to $150 (previously up to $170)

Apple Watch SE: up to $120 (previously up to $135)

Apple Watch Series 5: up to $120 (previously up to $135)

Apple Watch Series 4: up to $85 (previously up to $105)

Apple Watch Series 3: up to $50 (previously up to $70)

While it’s a bit complicated to speculate over trade-in values of iPads and Apple Watches, there could be a reason why Mac values dropped so much. It’s natural for Intel Macs to be less valuable now that Apple has completed the switch from Intel chips to its own chips.

For iPhones, on the other hand, Apple still gives up to $650 when trading in an iPhone 12 Pro Max. The company still accepts older iPhone 6s as a trade-in but offers only up to $30.

You can find the full list here.

LAYER x Deutsche Telekom show how to hide tech in stylish home decor

LAYER x Deutsche Telekom show how to hide tech in stylish home decor

Homes are getting more and more connected these days, mostly thanks to the new breed of Internet-connected devices scattered across the property. Although many of them try to blend in with your interior, such as smart speakers, which try to draw our attention visually and audibly, most of the devices look like a technical device. That doesn’t have to be the case, of course, and there are many ways to better integrate these devices into what look like everyday household objects and accessories. That’s exactly the proposal that Deutsche Telekom Design is making through LAYER, making interior design an integral part of the product’s design rather than an afterthought.

Designer: Benjamin Hubert (LAYER Design)

It’s not that difficult to spot devices and “smart appliances” inside a room. Smart speakers, even those that are stylish and attractive, don’t always fit in with the surroundings. There are also devices that do not hide their existence and openly proclaim their true nature. The most dangerous devices are routers and meshes. They can look like unnatural structures in a cozy home, while set-top boxes or wireless speakers can be just as harmful.

This visual and design inconsistency is no small matter when it comes to creating a conducive atmosphere for your home. Visual clutter can have psychological and physical consequences. Fortunately, that doesn’t have to be the case, especially with today’s technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes. That’s the kind of smart home that Deutsche Telekom is trying to present with this “eclectic family” of connected devices that look more like decor than tech products.

At the very top of that list is the router, which actually looks more like a desk mirror. In fact, it does function as one when the router’s display isn’t active. Even then, it only displays text rather than icons and images, making it a very minimalist piece of tech equipment. Joining it is a mesh repeater that masquerades as an upright wooden bowl decoration. They might even resemble some smart thermostats when hung on a wall, except without extraneous details and interfaces.

The set-top box/speaker does have telltale signs of an audio device, mostly due to the typical fabric-like surface that marks almost all speakers. With its minimalist design and text-based display it is still a great candidate for interior accessories. The product’s unique feature is the accompanying webcam, which measures less than a tuna can. There’s also a more typical set-top box that isn’t shaped like a box at all. It looks more like a bowl made of ceramic that can be displayed in your living room.

In addition to the designs themselves, this Home Harmony connectivity concept also tries to steer the ship towards more sustainable shores. Electronics are often made using plastics and unfriendly substances, but the use of wood, ceramic, and alternative materials will help make these objects not only blend in visually but also become a better part of people’s lives at home.

Apple Car self-driving could take cues from Siri and iPhone input

Apple Car self-driving could take cues from Siri and iPhone input

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Apple has hired Desi Ujkashevic, a former Ford executive, to join the efforts of the Apple Car project. Since then, questions continue to arise on whether or not the ‘Apple Car’ will become a real thing.

Also referred to as ‘Project Titan’, the project is working to create Apple’s first self-driving electric vehicle. It aims to launch as early as 2025, but reports propose that the goal is a bit too ambitious.

Apple Car may actually come to fruition

Reported by Patently Apple, the Cupertino company has published a new patent today regarding the Apple Car. The patent covers autonomous vehicles, specifically an advanced “Guidance System” that can refine the car’s final destinations.

The patent notes that an “autonomous” or “self-driving” vehicle is “capable of sensing [its] environment and navigating to destinations with little or no ongoing input from occupants.” However, driver input may be valuable to the motion control component of this self-driving vehicle.

Patently Apple suggests the Guidance System will be easy to use in areas where accurate mapping data may not be available. The patent includes various methods for guiding the vehicle using intent signals. It may use multiple computing devices to indicate the destination of the vehicle like a mall, office complex, etc.

A route towards the destination may be identified, and the vicinity of the destination may be reached. At this point, finer-grained guidance regarding the actual stopping point of the vehicle may be needed. The method may further comprise detecting, using one or more sensors, one or more signals generated by an individual authorized or permitted to provide guidance with respect to movements of the vehicle.

Additionally, the patent shows the driver may use the touch-screen of an iPhone or iPad to make inputs. The devices could mark an intended stopping point, trace a path, or indicate an intended direction using a virtual joy-stick – it seems that Siri may also be another way to command the vehicle.

Individuals may also be able to gesture toward an intended parking space by using a voice command such as “park over there.”

It’s also noted that Apple has scrapped previous patents to replace with new ones to better represent this project.

9to5Mac’s Take

There’s been a lot of rumors swirling around lately about the Apple Car. While we’ve been hearing about it for years, I finally feel like this project will actually become a real thing. With not only this new patent and the hiring of Desi Ujkashevic, Apple is probably eager to ramp up its work. While still many years away, it feels like things are heating up, and we will probably continue to hear even more.

What are your thoughts on the Apple Car rumors? Do you think it’s a real thing? Would you buy one?

Overwatch League 2022 starts May 5: How to get tokens and beta drops

Overwatch League 2022 starts May 5: How to get tokens and beta drops

Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch League, the professional esports organization that’s been all about Overwatch, returns for a new season — the league’s fifth — on Thursday, May 5. The new season of Overwatch League esports will usher in a substantial change: OWL players will be competing in the Overwatch 2 PvP beta, which means teams of five, hero reworks, and brand-new hero Sojourn will be playable.

Overwatch League will also be playing Overwatch 2‘s new mode, Push, as part of the gameplay rotation.

Viewers can check out the full Overwatch League 2022 schedule at the league’s official website, but here’s the gist for opening weekend: League play starts at 12 p.m. PDT/3 p.m. EDT on May 5 and runs through Sunday, May 8. Viewers who also play Overwatch will want to tune in for opening weekend, because the league is handing out beta access to the Overwatch 2 PvP test on PC — some 1,500 beta keys per hour. (Fans need to watch at least one hour of the broadcast to be eligible, Blizzard says, and are eligible for drops at the end of any hour in which they watch. Fans need to link their Battle.net account via the Overwatch League website for a chance to get into the beta. )

Overwatch players can also earn Overwatch League Tokens by watching, and those can be used to purchase limited-time skins exclusively available via those tokens. Viewers will earn five tokens for every hour of live Overwatch League matches they watch, with 2X token drops during select matches. Again, that requires linking your Battle.net account.

More details on Overwatch League perks and its opening weekend are available at the official website.

Samsung Earns ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Awards for Environmental Protection

Samsung Earns ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Awards for Environmental Protection – Samsung Global Newsroom

Underscoring our environmental leadership, Samsung Electronics America today received two 2022 ENERGY STAR(r) Partner of the Year Awards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The Samsung awards include the ninth Sustained Excellence Award to Product Brand Owner, and the second Partner of Energy Management Award. These honors recognize the outstanding contribution the company has made in protecting the environment by demonstrating exceptional product innovation and achieving operational energy efficiency. These 2022 recognitions demonstrate Samsung’s continued successes in energy efficiency from products to operations, building on the company’s landmark accomplishments in 2021. The latest accolades come on the heels of the rare and prestigious Corporate Commitment Award received in 2021 for Samsung’s long-standing and multi-faceted commitment to demonstrating leadership and partnership across the ENERGY STAR program, mitigating climate change and providing efficient solutions in support of our customers’ goals.

The EPA’s ENERGY STAR program has been America’s resource for saving both energy and money, as well as protecting the climate, for 30 years. As part of its annual ENERGY STAR Awards, the EPA honors businesses and organizations for leading their industries in the creation of energy-efficient products and services, and in the development and adoption of strategies that provide substantial energy savings in buildings.

“Sustainability is core to Samsung’s mission and we have an obligation to help stem the effects of climate change and preserve our planet for future generations. These accolades from the EPA reflect our ongoing efforts to reduce our impact through our efficient ENERGY STAR products, as well as through our reduced energy footprint in the built environment,” said Mark Newton, Head of Corporate Sustainability for Samsung Electronics America. “We’re proud to promote the EPA ENERGY STAR program and are thrilled to be recognized for our leadership in delivering sustainable innovations to our customers and supporting a clean and efficient energy economy in our operations.”

“We know it’s going to take all of us working together to tackle the climate crisis, and the 2022 ENERGY STAR award-winning partners are demonstrating what it takes to build a more sustainable future,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “These companies are showing once again that taking action in support of a clean energy economy can be good not only for the environment, but also for business and customers.”

The Sustained Excellence Award to Product Brand Owner is a prestigious honor bestowed by ENERGY STAR. It’s awarded to ENERGY STAR partners that have made a long-term commitment to fighting the climate crisis by providing and promoting energy efficient products to consumers and demonstrating leadership in energy efficiency. This marks the ninth year that Samsung has been named an ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence partner in the Product Brand Owner category.

As a world technology leader, Samsung believes consumers have an opportunity to impact the environment by making everyday choices. This includes the possibility to buy energy-efficient products that reduce energy consumption without compromising performance, comfort, or features. In 2021, Samsung had 381 ENERGY STAR base models in the U.S., which is an increase of 25% compared to 2020. Moreover, all of Samsung’s PCs, dishwashers, front load clothes washers and air purifiers are ENERGY STAR certified. Samsung is committed to energy efficiency innovation and that is why the company won the 2021 ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for Advanced Adaptive Compressors in the refrigerator category and the 2022 Emerging Technology Award for Induction Cooking Tops. These are awards that recognize innovative technologies that improve energy efficiency. Globally, Samsung product efficiency innovations have helped our customers avoid an estimated 301 million tons of CO2 emissions since 2009, the equivalent of removing more than 65 million cars off the road.

The Partner of the Year for Energy Management Award is given to ENERGY STAR partners that can demonstrate excellence in improving the energy performance of buildings and plants through a corporate-wide, portfolio-based energy program. From offices to warehouses and distribution centers, to electronic and appliance labs, Samsung Electronics America has a diverse portfolio of 41 buildings located across the country. As of 2021, the company has received ENERGY STAR Tenant Space recognition for seven leased spaces. As of 2021, this number ranked second nationally for most recognized properties within Tenant Space. As a result, Samsung Electronics America represented about 19% of the total properties recognized nationally within Tenant Space.

In addition to the Tenant Space effort, Samsung is meeting previous commitments for energy demand mitigation by retrofitting facilities with ENERGY STAR certified equipment, fixtures and products, as well as powering all facilities in the U.S., including manufacturing, with 100% renewable energy. Moreover, in 2021, Samsung enjoyed a continued reduction in electricity consumption from 2020 resulting in a 10% reduction in Weather Normalized Site Energy Use Intensity (kBtu/ft2).

Samsung’s commitment to energy efficient products and operations is a critical aspect of the company’s efforts to tackle climate change. We look forward to continuing our efforts to ensure consumers have a positive impact on the environment by making everyday changes that focus on energy efficiency.

Fortnite is free on iPhone and Android again with Xbox Cloud Gaming

Fortnite is free on iPhone and Android again with Xbox Cloud Gaming

Microsoft is bringing Fortnite back to mobile devices, just not the way you expect. On Thursday, Microsoft announced a new partnership with Epic Games that will make Fortnite playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming and free on all supported browser, enabled devices. Among the devices that are compatible with Fortnite are a variety of Android and iOS devices, including iPhones and iPads.

To play the game on mobile, players will have to go to Xbox’s website on a web browser, then sign in with their Microsoft account. After that, players can jump into games with either touchscreen controls or with an Xbox controller.

The game was previously playable in browsers using Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but the latest version will be free for anyone with an Xbox account. This is the first entirely free game that Microsoft has brought to its cloud service. Similar browser-based Fortnite streaming is also available through Nvidia’s GeForce Now streaming service as well, though that requires a subscription.

Fortnite was removed from both Apple and Google’s mobile app stores in 2020 after Epic allowed players to purchase V-Bucks (the game’s currency) directly from Epic instead of through the App Store, bypassing the stores’ cut for the purchase price — a move that explicitly violates Apple’s App Store agreement.

Apple quickly removed Fortnite from the App Store — a move that Epic anticipated — leading Epic to release a video that parodied Apple’s most famous commercial, and to file a lawsuit against Apple. Google likewise pulled Fortnite from its app store, leading Epic to instruct players how to install the game outside of the Google Play app store. Apple and Google then counter-sued Epic.

The case made it to court and the judge ruled that Apple can’t prohibit developers from providing alternative options for purchase. Despite this, Fortnite remains unavailable on the iOS App Store, and may remain that way for up to five years, according to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney.

Leaked photos show a new Infinix Note model with 108MP camera, 120W fast charging

Leaked photos show a new Infinix Note model with 108MP camera, 120W fast charging

Infinix announced a trio of new devices last week, including the Note 12. It seems that this was only the start of a new series as an anonymous tipster sent us images of a new model along with some information about it.

Spy shots of a new Infinix Note model, note the 108 MP camera (and ultra wide module)

Spy shots of a new Infinix Note model, note the 108 MP camera (and ultra wide module)

Our source tells us that this is part of the Note series and judging from what we know, it will be a higher-end offering than the vanilla 12 – a sequel to the Infinix Note 11 Pro, perhaps.

You can see the 108 MP label on the back, that’s quite an upgrade over the 50 MP 1/2.8” sensor of the Note 12. Also, there is an extra camera and judging by the “12-24 mm” marking, it will be an ultra wide module (the vanilla Note only got a 2 MP depth sensor extra). Infinix previously used a 108 MP sensor on the Zero X Pro (an ISOCELL HM2).

Upcoming Infinix Note model

Upcoming Infinix Note model

Anyway, our tipster says that this Note model will probably be powered by the Helio G96. Compared to the G88 found inside the vanilla model, this means faster CPU cores (using two A76 cores instead of two A75), a similar Mali-G57 MC2 GPU and support for 108 MP sensors.

Last year we tested an Infinix concept phone that supported 160W fast charging. However, no production Infinix has broken the 100W barrier yet – something that might change with the new Note.

The USB-C port may support 120W fast charging (also note the 3.5 mm headphone jack)

The USB-C port may support 120W fast charging (also note the 3.5 mm headphone jack)

If our info is correct, the company has been testing 120W fast charging for this model. We don’t know the battery capacity or the 0-100% charge time, but it will be much faster than the regular Note 12 (which has a 5,000 mAh battery with 33W charging support).

There is no word on the exact launch date yet, but it should be fairly soon.
