Apple working on display for foldable iPhones using tech similar to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3

Apple has reportedly started development work on a new type of display for foldable iPhones or iPads. The technology described is similar to that used in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3.

OLED screens originally had separate layers for every function needed to make the display work: backlighting, content, touch, filtering, protection, and so on. The trend since then has been to combine layers to make screens thinner and lighter.

For the third generation of Samsung’s Galaxy Z fold, the company eliminated the polarizer layer, and Apple is now said to be working on its own version of this tech. The Elec reports.

Polarizers are used to allow only lights in certain directions to pass through, thereby improving the visibility of the display.

However, its use lessens the brightness, thereby affecting the luminance efficiency of the panel as well Companies usually increase the power consumption of the panels to offset this but this also leads to less lifespan for the panels. Removing the polarizer and applying technology with a similar effect resolves these trade-offs.

Samsung’s version claims a third more light transmittance and a 25% power saving.

For Apple products, the Cupertino company creates its own designs for displays, then outsources production to companies like Samsung and LG. Samsung Display currently has the most advanced display manufacturing capabilities, so has often been the sole supplier of screens for Apple until other suppliers catch up.

Apple is believed to have been experimenting with foldable iPhone displays for many years. However, the company’s general approach to new technology is to refrain from the race to be first to market, and to take the time to develop what the company considers to be the best implementation.

We’ve seen quite a few concept images over the years. The most recent reports suggest that we won’t see a foldable iPhone until 2025 at the earliest. These reports still haven’t answered the key question, however: Is Apple’s plan a conventional-size iPhone that opens out into something like an iPad, or a standard iPhone display that folds in half, like the Motorola Razr?

There also remains the possibility that Apple won’t launch a folding iPhone at all. The company has reportedly taken the view that folding phones may involve too many compromises to be anything more than a passing fad. I noted that this seemed to me to be a smart consideration.

Although we’ve had more foldable phones since then, it’s clear that they haven’t set the world ablaze. All the signs point to them selling in very small numbers, and despite living in a large city and having a lot of techy friends, I have yet to see a single folding phone in the wild.

So I do think a case can be made that folding phones are indeed a passing fad. That they have enough wow factor to be superficially appealing, but perhaps not enough practical benefit to persuade people to accept the compromises they entail.

Our sister site 9to5Google said that while the tech has developed, even the Galaxy Fold 3 was too fragile and too expensive to be considered a serious contender for many.

Some just fill the back of tablets and laptops with random designs that hint at their aesthetic tastes. But why risk ruining your laptop’s coating with adhesive when you can get an ASUS laptop that already comes pre-installed with artistic decals, especially from two of this age’s biggest names in the art field that are lending their brush to the Vivobook 13 Slate OLED.

For some people, the pristine surface of the back of a laptop or even a 2-in-1 tablet like the ASUS Vivobook 13 Slate is like a blank canvas just begging for a splash of color and a jumble of lines. Not all of us are artistically inclined, however, and even fewer will know how to safely apply paints and other materials without actually damaging an electronic device. Thankfully, ASUS has done the hard work for us with Artist Editions of its 13.3-inch detachable laptop.


Steven Harrington’s cartoon style bends and curves, giving the composition a sense of dynamism and a pinch of whimsy. Bright pastel colors bring characters and objects to life, creating an almost psychedelic visual experience for observers. Imagine how interesting such an artwork would be on the back of this tablet slash laptop, especially considering how it will always be on display for everyone to see. It would be like staring at a mural or wall graffiti, except in a smaller form and just right across the table.

ASUS x Philip Colbert

Philip Colbert has been described as the crown prince of pop art and, perhaps more significantly, the “godson” of the renowned artist Andy Warhol. Those are pretty heavy titles that carry a lot of prestige as well as expectations, but the young artist seems to take it all in stride and even manages to inject a bit of fun into his masterpieces. Pretty much what you’d expect from an artist with an anthropomorphic lobster as an alter ego!

Colbert’s pop art is often filled with such animals, sometimes in odd poses or clothing. The addition of bright colors, patterns, and objects strewn in an almost disorganized manner makes his artworks look almost surreal as if taken straight from someone’s dreams. This is the kind of impression that Philip Colbert Edition of the Vivobook 13 Slate brings to the table, especially with its mix of materials, themes, and eggs. And yes, there are plenty of lobsters, too.

This Artist’s Edition is a bit more tactile, especially with an elastic rope that crisscrosses on the back of the device. While this edition does come with a mouse and a sleeve, the real highlight as far as accessories go is the lobster figurine. More than just a decorative desk piece, it is actually functional as well, holding a stylus up high when you’re not using it, ever-ready to put your next big idea on digital canvas when it arrives.

Skin Deep

This isn’t ASUS’ first rodeo with making special edition computers that cater to artists, designers, and lovers of the arts, and these Artists Editions join the growing number of tech products that target these groups. Unfortunately, while these are indeed visual and even tactile treats, the computer underneath might not meet everyone’s expectations, especially the creatives that these products are targeting.

The Vivobook 13 Slate OLED beneath these pieces of art is powered by an Intel Pentium N6000, not exactly the most capable of Intel’s processors. There’s only 8GB of RAM inside, and you’re stuck with that for better or worse. The 13.3-inch OLED display might be large, but the 1920×1080 resolution is pretty basic, especially for those doing digital artwork on this kind of device. The Vivobook 13 Slate does aim for economy, with its $600 price tag, but an Artists Edition such as this would most likely have a higher asking price. No word on exact figures yet, though, but the two art-covered slates are expected to launch sometime this second quarter.

This weird iPhone prototype has an iPod Click Wheel that turns into a number pad

Before Apple officially announced the iPhone in 2007, the company secretly developed multiple prototypes – and some of them had a very different design than what we know as the iPhone today. However, another iPhone prototype has now been revealed with a really intriguing design, as it has an iPod Click Wheel that turns into a number pad.

The prototype was revealed by Tony Fadell (via TechCrunch), who was mainly responsible for iPod development at Apple in the 2000s. As Fadell recently released a new book called Build, he has now been sharing details about his time working at Apple and other tech companies.

The story behind the development of the first iPhone has already been told by many people. After Apple’s partnership with Motorola to put iTunes on the ROKR E1 was a failure, Steve Jobs and other Apple engineers were convinced that they had to develop their own smartphone.

However, before 2007, Apple had no other mobile device except the iPod, which was first used as the conceptual basis for Apple’s smartphone. As the company explored the idea of simply putting a phone inside an iPod, a peculiar prototype was created with a Click Wheel that turned into a number pad.

According to Fadell, the prototype was built by a third-party manufacturer in the early stages of “iPod Phone” development. Thanks to a swivel, users could quickly change the bottom of the iPod to use it as a phone. The prototype also had a built-in camera and the colors were already quite similar to the official ones chosen for the first iPhone.

How the iPod Phone became the iPhone

Interestingly, Fadell says that Steve Jobs was the one who strongly encouraged the team to create an iPod with a phone instead of a completely new device. This was because since the iPod design had become so iconic with the Click Wheel, Jobs believed that Apple’s smartphone should have it as well.

“[Jobs] had very clear views on things — until they weren’t clear,” he says. “Or it became very clear that they wouldn’t work. He pushed us very hard on making the iPod Plus Phone work. We worked weeks and weeks to figure out how to do input with the click wheel. We couldn’t get it, and after the whole team was convinced we couldn’t do it, he was like, ‘keep trying!’ At some point we all said, ‘no, it isn’t going to work.’”

Although the former VP of the iPod division believed that this was a good idea at first, he agrees that the experience of using a phone with a Click Wheel wasn’t good. This led Apple’s engineers and designers to completely rethink the project, this time with a large touch screen, almost no physical buttons, and a Mac OS X based operating system. Build

In his new Build book, Fadell shared several other stories about his work at Apple. For instance, he revealed how Steve Jobs was totally against making the iPod compatible with Windows PCs. Fadell also told about how former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made Jobs believe that web apps were the right choice for the iPhone.

Of course, the book also features stories about Nest Labs, the smart home device company that Fadell founded after he left Apple, and which was later acquired by Google.

vivo X80 series India launch set for May 18

The vivo X80 series unveiled last month in China began its global rollout a couple of days ago, starting with Malaysia, and its next stop will be India as vivo’s Indian branch today announced that the X80 series will debut in India on May 18 at noon local time.

The vivo X80 series includes three models – X80, X80 Pro, and X80 Pro+. However, the Pro+ version isn’t unveiled yet, and it will only arrive in Q3 2022, so it’s not launching in India next Wednesday. Moreover, vivo India has only confirmed the X80 Pro explicitly, but the use of the word “series” in its promo campaign pretty much confirms the company will also launch the X80 in India on May 18.

vivo hasn’t revealed the X80 and X80 Pro’s Indian prices yet, but the company says the smartphones will be sold exclusively through Flipkart. Although you can also expect them to be available for purchase through vivo’s official Indian website and retail stores across the country.

Another bit confirmed by vivo is the X80 Pro’s processor. The smartphone was announced with two chipsets – Dimensity 9000 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. And it will be the latter that will power the Indian units, which is hardly a surprise since the Malaysian model also has Qualcomm’s flagship silicon at the helm, while the Dimensity 9000 variant remains China-exclusive for now.

The vanilla X80, on the other hand, comes with the Dimensity 9000 SoC regardless of the region. However, while the Chinese versions of the X80 and X80 Pro run Android 12-based OriginOS Ocean, their global counterparts boot FuntouchOS 12.

IDC: Smartphone shipments declined in India during Q1, Realme grew by 46%

Smartphone shipments in India declined for the third quarter in a row. The January-March period saw 37 million smartphone shipments which is a 4.8% decline compared to the same period last year. Xiaomi was the market leader with 8.5 million shipments, followed by Samsung with 7 million and Realme with 6 million. Realme was the only company that managed yearly growth in India during the period with a 46.3% rise compared to Q1 2021.

Vivo (5.5 million shipments) and Oppo (3.5 million) rounded out the top-five vendors list. Analysts suggest the combination of the third COVID wave, supply shortages and rising inflation all contributed to the lower shipment levels. At the same time, average selling prices (ASPs) continued to rise reaching INR 17,000 ($221) which is an all-time high. Offline shipments fell by 13%.

Sleek scooters designed to transform urban commute

Scooters are like the motorbike’s friendly little brother! They are easier to ride, sleek, and also seem more approachable! Weaving through traffic is super easy with them, letting you finally bid adieu to traffic jams. And if you choose an electric scooter as your preferred means of transportation, then you’re also cutting down on fossil-fuel consumption, and being a major support to planet Earth. In an ode to scooters and their immense functionality, we’ve curated a collection of innovative and nifty scooter designs that seem to be slowly taking over the automotive industry. Ride on!

1. The Stilride Scooter


Swedish startup Stilride launched an electric scooter made from what they call “industrial origami.” Instead of over a hundred separate parts, the Stilride scooter whittles the number down to about 15. The main body of the scooter comes from just a few sheets of steel that are folded by a robotic arm. There are several benefits to this rather innovative process, starting with the reduction of wasted material. The process also takes up less energy, which means fewer fossil fuels are burned during the manufacturing of these scooters.

2. The Rena Max e-scooter


This is the Rena Max e-scooter which definitely shines out in the crowd with its radical design. The fully electric scooter is focused on the needs of the Middle-Eastern and North African delivery personnel. Given its origins, that strategy is absolutely understandable. At the heart, it is an outright delivery platform, and Barq developed this last-mile delivery concept in collaboration with Jahez (A Saudi delivery platform), and Americana (a Kuwaiti food group). The latter has a strong presence in the MENA region with over 1200 food and beverage outlets. Since we are talking of delivery services, the focus is also on digitally lockable carry box that has temperature control, modular shelving, and insulation. The climate-controlled environment ensured the freshness of the food or beverage being delivered.

3. The SMEG Futro

Relying heavily on the Vespa (and even SMEG’s) soft, rounded, colorful, fun-loving image, the SMEG Futro is an e-scooter concept that embodies the feeling of driving down to the beach, the park, or the lake for a lazy Sunday. The scooter’s curved form language is a direct inspiration of SMEG’s own design styles and leans heavily into the golden age of Italian automotive design (when companies like Vespa and Lambretta came to be), while its side panels open up to reveal a whole host of picnic items and tiny kitchen appliances, all the way from tiffins and thermoses to even a toaster and wine cooler!

4. The Justin Bieber X Vespa scooter

Treading on his own experience riding the iconic scooter, Bieber coated his design in optic white livery on the exterior panels and rims for a sleek look to go with the scooter’s feathery light frame. Then, he added his own bad boy flair with a flame decal that’s etched across the scooter’s body. The Justin Bieber X Vespa scooter design is also available in 50, 100, and 100cc guises. Located right between the two handlebars, a full-color digital display syncs with the rider’s smartphone to play music and adjust the LED light’s brightness and color tones. Additionally, Bieber’s collaboration includes gloves, a driving bag, and a matching flame-printed helmet for riders to scoot in style.

5. The NIU NQi GT/S

Custom Wooden NIU Moped by Kalpataru

The custom wooden NQi GT/S obviously isn’t trying to make a point about sustainability or environmental friendliness. It’s an experiment in working with wood as an automotive material, and from the looks of it, I wholeheartedly approve! With an aesthetic that reminds me a lot of automotive clay, the custom NIU moped looks decidedly eclectic, earthy, and like an absolute art-piece. Every single element of its body is made by hand from blocks of wood that were finished and assembled in place, and finally finished with brass accents that bring the moped alive, with an old-meets-new steampunk vibe!

6. Mopet

Mopet is a pet-friendly e-scooter with an integrated storage compartment so small dogs can come along with you on rides in a secure crate. There aren’t many options for dog owners to get around cities with their little pup in tow. Resolving to pulling their dogs on leashes or stowing smaller pups inside bicycle baskets, the options are either inconvenient or unsafe. Providing a solution for dog owners to crate their dogs around with them, Mopet is an electric scooter design that integrates a spacious and secure storage compartment where owners can keep their dogs while they scoot around from place to place.

7. The Gyro Canopy e

With a canopy that provides shelter against rain or even direct sun in some cases, the Gyro Canopy e is Honda’s revamp of its popular Gyro three-wheeled business-scooter line. The new Canopy e looks rather similar to a concept Honda debuted back at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, but now features a much more detailed design that looks like the company’s serious about putting the vehicle into production. Notably, the Canopy e even comes with an electric powertrain, and more importantly, swappable batteries that allow delivery personnel to swiftly and easily swap out batteries instead of waiting to recharge them.

8. BeoSpeed

Aiming to capture the electronics company’s laser focus on the details, Martini outfitted BeoSpeed with a polished, clean exterior that asserts its durable, hefty weight with a stainless steel coat. Striking a mix between modern and classic, BeoSpeed dons natural leather seating and handlebars reminiscent of Bang & Olufsen’s headphone cushions. Working Bang & Olufsen’s curated sophistication into BeoSpeed, the electric scooter features smooth edges, minimally adorned wheels, and stripped-back leather accents that give it a retro and slicked-back personality. Soft, warm headlights and wheel lights are subdued with leather straps and metal stencils, giving the scooter an elusive edge while coasting through night-dark city streets.

9. The Uber Balance

The Uber Balance may seem like a clever fusion of a scooter and the stabilizer rig often used with video cameras, but honestly, it’s an extremely natural pairing if you ask me. Gimbals/stabilizers have been used on boats and yachts to prevent them from tipping over on rough waters, and even if you look strictly at the domain of dining and hospitality, bartenders have perfected the ability to perform tricks while flipping bottles, trays, glasses without getting your drink to tip over.

10. BMW Motorrad e-scooter concept

Designed to look almost like the successor to BMW’s Concept Link from 2017, the e-scooter by Carota Design uses a similar CMF, but with leaner, lighter, and narrower forms. The matte-finish metal panels look distinctly like something from BMW’s playbook, while those orange accents around the windscreen give the e-scooter the pop of color it needs. The E-scooter’s front comes with paneling that conceals the rider’s legs, pretty emblematic of scooter designs, while the motor and battery seem to reside in the space in front of the rear wheel. Carota’s design features a cantilever seat that cuts down on the boot storage but provides a loop on the left to secure your helmet in place.

Samsung completes development of its new 200MP camera, expected to come with Galaxy S23 Ultra

Samsung unveiled its 200MP ISOCELLL HP1 camera last September, but it hasn’t used it on any of its smartphones yet. And while we await more details from Samsung about its first 200MP camera smartphone, Korean publication ETNews claims that Samsung has finished developing its new 200MP camera sensor, which is expected to be used on next year’s Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The publication also claims that Samsung Electro-Mechanics, the Korean conglomerate’s camera division, will manufacture 70% of the new 200MP sensor’s units, while 30% will be manufactured by Samsung Electronics.

Not much is known about this new 200MP camera sensor, but since Samsung has completed its development, we expect to hear more about it soon.

Samsung Electronics is showcasing the future of Micro LED technology at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2022 in Barcelona, with three new models of its state-of-the-art display technology, The Wall.

2022 The Wall Introducing the Slimmest Ever Pixel Pitch

 

At ISE this year, Samsung will unveil its 2022 model of The Wall (Model name: IWB) — an innovative modular Micro LED display that delivers immersive viewing experiences in a high-resolution, large screen format. The IWB will be available in 0.63 and 0.94pixel pitches, with 0.63 being the slimmest ever pixel pitch in The Wall lineup. The new display is now available to preorder globally. 

 

The micro pitch feature of the IWB demonstrates Samsung’s most detailed picture and dynamic range expansion with the screen’s 120Hz frame rate, HDR10/10+ and LED HDR. Following installation, The Wall provides a variety of screen sizes, accommodating 4K movies for 110-inch and up to incredible 8K quality for 220-inch to meet any consumer or business needs. This resolution capability is enhanced by the powerful Micro AI (Artificial Intelligence) Processor, which analyzes every second of content instantly and optimizes picture quality while removing noise.

 

 

The overall size of the cabinets has been increased, allowing businesses and consumers to install only four cabinets to configure the UHD screen, meaning faster and more cost-efficient operation. The display’s improved cabinet strengthens the large, high-resolution screens and improves the mechanical quality for immersive viewing while enhancing seam adjustment. In fact, the installation time has been reduced offering significant benefits to businesses compared to conventional LED signage.

 

The Wall is also packed with industry-leading technology. Firstly, with Multi View, The Wall enables simultaneous multi-source playback from up to four sources, all on one screen, without any additional splitter required for dynamic content display. Secondly, Black Seal Technology built into the display creates a seamless canvas for purer black levels, with an ultra-low reflective film that has been applied to minimize external light reflection. Plus, with 20-bit processing, The Wall delivers outstanding image quality and a smooth viewing experience, supported by a peak of 2,000 nits providing clearer images.

 

 

 

The Wall All-in-One Innovative and Convenient Installation 

Also being unveiled in Barcelona this year, is The Wall All-in-One (Model name: IAB) available in three different models: 4K 146-inch, 2K 146-inch and 2K 110-inch. This incredible, next generation display brings innovation to the installation, not just the viewing experience. The standard resolution of The Wall All-in-One is a 16:9 form factor. The product, which is only sold by screen, will be available globally following ISE 2022. 

 

 

The most innovative feature of The Wall All-in-One is the convenient installation that features a pre-adjusted seam and a ‘Pre-Assembled Frame Kit’. This kit, which makes the whole process simple as a consumer TV, includes the 16:9 form factor display’s internalized deco bezel and an embedded media player S-box, also lowering the total cost of ownership.

 

 

The Wall All-in-One offers a sleek design with display thinness of just 49mm, which is ultimately 59mm in total installation when measured from wall to screen. This slim, bezel-less infinity design provides a direct input connection on the screen without a separate device — creating a clean and convenient setup.

 

 

Additionally, together with 20-bit processing, Black Seal technology and Micro AI Processor, two 4K 146-inch screens can be installed side by side to create a 32:9 form factor model with a detachable feature creating an entire wall of outstanding image quality.

 

 

 

Versatile Display Lineup Adapting to a New Era — From EV Charging Station to Hybrid Classroom

Along with industry-leading Micro LED technology, Samsung is showcasing various new display products at ISE that will meet the constantly evolving needs of this new era. The new lineup will exemplify Samsung’s ongoing innovation in building solutions that include the likes of contactless communication and enhanced safety features.

 

Samsung’s latest 2022 outdoor line-up (Model Name: OHA 55’’, 75’’) has been verified for outdoor visibility by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), while the slim composition enables easy installation and long-term performance through certified IP56-rated protection. With its durable and high-performing hardware, the OHA can perform in a variety of conditions. One use case is electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, which are increasing in demand as the sales of electric vehicles continue to rise worldwide.

 

 

In education, Samsung continues to deliver hybrid learning experiences with its innovative product and solutions. The new 2022 Samsung Flip Pro (Model Name: WMB), available in two large 75- and 85-inch models, is an interactive whiteboard that can provide both teachers and students, with enhanced usability and specialized features to meet ever-changing education needs.

 

 

Samsung Flip Pro’s newly added USB Type-C connectivity provides integrated video control and power (65W charging), while industry-leading touch latency and multi touch features allow simultaneous collaboration for up to 20 people.1 The newly added intuitive control panel, brightness control sensors, and the four front- and rear-facing speakers enhance the overall classroom experience and enable seamless video communication in a remote or hybrid classroom environment. Lastly, with SmartView+, up to 50 devices can be simultaneously connected to the display wirelessly, in addition to enabling multi-view on up to four screens, ideal for larger meeting rooms as well as digitized classrooms. The technology works seamlessly in the background making the product easy to use by teachers and students alike.

Realme is planning a May 12 launch for its European customers, where the 9 series is expected to appear. We are going to see the Realme 9 with a 108 MP main camera and the Realme 9 5G, and previously we saw a report, suggesting the latter is different from its namesake, launched in India.

These rumors were confirmed today as the new European Realme 9 5G popped up on the company website in Poland, revealing a familiar design, a new chipset, and a new set of cameras. We should point out that while the promo images look legit, some materials appear to be reused, and that’s why the official page has some images and videos mixed.

The new Realme 9 5G is listed with a 6. 6″ LCD with 1080p resolution and a fingerprint scanner on the side. The front offers a 120 Hz refresh rate and 240 Hz touch sampling rate. The Dimensity 810 chipset in the Indian version has been replaced with a Snapdragon 695 that brings a 2x Kryo Gold 2. 2 GHz + 6x Kryo Silver 1. 8 GHz CPU.

RAM is listed as 4 GB, but it can be expanded by up to 3 GB more. Storage is either 64 GB or 128 GB, so we should expect two prices, just as the previous rumor suggested. The trio of cameras is 50 MP main + 2 MP B&W + 2 MP depth sensor, and the front-facing shooter is listed as 16 MP with f/2. 1 aperture and 5P lens.
