Pixel 7 First Look – Google unveils the upcoming smartphone in a rare move at the Google I/O 2022 Keynote

Pixel 7 First Look – Google unveils the upcoming smartphone in a rare move at the Google I/O 2022 Keynote

In a pretty unprecedented move at today’s Google I/O, the company gave a sneak peek at a phone that’s months away from being launched. Google decided that instead of letting people speculate about their future projects, unlike other tech companies (especially Apple), it would rather let the world see the bandaid than keep them secret. Along with the Pixel 6A (which really quickly became stale news), Google’s Brian Rakowski also presented the world with a ‘first look’ at the Pixel 7, due this fall. The 7 follows the unique camera bumper style of the Pixel 6, but cuts its visual mass by providing ‘eye-shaped’ outlines around the cameras. There is still a bump. However, there’s an opening within it that adds visual interest to the phone. It’s up to you whether or not you like it. Me? Well, I honestly think it’s refreshing, but I belong to the group of people who wants to see phones reinvent THEMSELVES, not just their camera bumps.

Designer: Google

This isn’t the first time Google just ‘self-leaked’ their own phone design. Amid a lot of speculation, the company also provided a preview of their Pixel 4 on Twitter, although that was just an image hinting at the phone’s design. With this reveal, Google’s pretty much showed us what the phone is EXACTLY going to look like. Only the color options are what will be on the new phone.

The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro look striking to say the least. The camera bumper is given a metallic finish (chrome in the 7 Pro, matte in the 7), with cutouts that show the cameras underneath. The Pixel 7 has two lenses and a flash, whereas the Pro has a third lens, turning the cutout into a rather weird sideways ‘i’ shape. It’s hard to say if I like it. It’s memorable. That’s where I am at the moment.

The Pixel 7 was soon overshadowed by a bunch of other hardware announcements, including the Pixel Buds Pro, the Pixel Watch, the Pixel Tab, as well as Google’s renewed attempt at augmented reality glasses – but that was more of a preview than a launch, like last year’s Project Starline.

Google announces new Wallet app with support for digital IDs

Google announces new Wallet app with support for digital IDs

If there’s one thing Google likes to do almost as much as constantly launching new messaging apps, it’s killing an app or service and then after a while launching another thing with the same name. So, with that in mind, say hello to the new Google Wallet. This will be available for Android and Wear OS devices in the coming weeks in “over 40 countries”.

As you might expect, you can use it to store bank cards for tap to pay, but also any other sort of card you might have, including loyalty ones. But not just that – vaccine certificates? Check! And at some later point, Wallet will even support digital IDs, where you can identify yourself without even giving anyone your phone, through the magic of NFC. This obviously depends on state support, so the rollout might take some time, even in the US, where it’s starting.

Digital office and hotel keys will also be supported, and developers can make almost any item into a digital pass. Google has created some templates that are the easiest to use – for boarding passes and event tickets and the likes, but there’s also a generic template for more unique things.

To add a boarding pass or Covid vaccine card, you can simply take a screenshot of it and then you’ll see an option to add it directly to your Google Wallet. Once it’s added, you’ll get notifications of delays and gate changes. The same goes for concert tickets – you’ll receive a notification reminding you of the gig.

And if you look up directions in Maps to go see a friend, your transit card balance (provided it’s added to Wallet) will be shown alongside the route. If you’re low on credit/fare, you can tap and add more.

Since Google loves to be confusing with its apps and services sometimes, Google Pay will still be around in the US, India, and Singapore, focusing on sending and receiving payments from friends, but you’ll pay for stuff with Google Wallet. See? We told you it was confusing.

Apple selling out of last iPods ever, here’s where you can still buy an iPod touch

Apple selling out of last iPods ever, here’s where you can still buy an iPod touch

After Apple announced it is discontinuing the iPod touch (7th generation) yesterday and retiring the iPod altogether, consumers have been rushing to retailers in-store and online to buy one of these devices. The product is only being sold at retailers while supplies last.

While we don’t have exact inventory counts, here’s what we know is in stock. We’ll continue to update periodically as inventory changes.

Apple

On Apple’s website, the 256GB iPod touch is sold out in every color. However, there are still options available for the 32GB and 128GB models. The 128GB is available in every color but (PRODUCT)RED and the 32GB is available in every color except Silver.

When buying through Apple, new subscribers receive three months of Apple TV+ for free.

Best Buy

Best Buy is sold out of all of the 32GB options with the exception of the Space Gray model. For 128GB, you can still buy a Blue and a Space Gray. The Space Gray option is slightly more costly than other colors available at Best Buy. Additionally, all of the 256GB models are out of stock.

Best Buy includes three months of Apple TV+, six months of Apple Music, and six months of Apple News+ for free when you purchase an iPod touch. Each subscription is for new subscribers only.

Target

Target only has a 32GB option available for both the Blue and Space Gray models. All other iPod touches are sold out.

Target offers four months free Apple Music to new customers through the Target Circle program.

Walmart

Walmart is where you’ll find some of the best prices for an iPod touch. 32GB is available in every color except Blue and 128GB is available in Space Gray, (PRODUCT)RED, and Pink. Walmart is entirely sold out of 256GB options as those seem to be the most popular models at most retailers.

Amazon

The iPod touch is currently listed as a best seller on Amazon and has decent stock. There’s even a 5% discount on what’s available. Every 32GB model is in stock and you can find a 128GB in Gold, Pink, and (PRODUCT)RED. There’s even some 256GB available in either Silver or Space Gray.

Must-have accessories for your iPod touch

  • 2 in 1 Shockproof iPod Case with Screen Protectors
  • (2 Pack) Tempered Glass Screen Protector
  • ULAK Case Bag

Keep in mind, inventory at these retailers will change throughout the day and we will continue to keep you updated on where to buy an iPod touch.

Google Maps immersive view launches this year to give you the vibe of a place from afar

Google Maps immersive view launches this year to give you the vibe of a place from afar

Google Translate wasn’t the only app/service that got some new features announced at Google I/O today – so did Maps. Google Maps will soon get an immersive view feature. The name of the service is quite self-explanatory. It should work initially for LA, London and New York as well as San Francisco, San Francisco, Tokyo and San Francisco. More cities will follow.

So, what’s all the fuss about? Immersive View takes Street View and aerial photos to the next level. It combines them to give you a sense of the atmosphere in a particular place, no matter where you are. Let’s suppose you would like to “soar above Westminster” to view the area and marvellous architecture, such as Big Ben. Immersive view lets you do just that.

With a time slider you can check out what the area looks like at different times of day and in various weather conditions, and thus figure out where the busiest spots are. When you go down to street level you can see information like live busyness and nearby traffic, and even look inside restaurants and other places to get an idea of what they’re like before you go.

Immersive View should be compatible with “just about every phone”, thanks to Google’s unique ability to combine billions of Street View images and aerial photos to make “a rich digital model” of the world.

Eco-friendly routing is coming soon to Europe after its initial debut the US and Canada, while Live View is now available for third-party app developers. The feature called Live View uses AR to show directions and arrows as well as navigation when you are walking. Lime and Accenture use this feature to assist concertgoers and sports enthusiasts at Marvel Stadium. There will be many more uses.

Google Translate gets support for 24 additional languages

Google Translate gets support for 24 additional languages

At its I/O developer conference today, Google kicked things off by announcing an expansion relating to Google Translate. Namely, that the service now supports 24 additional languages. This brings the total supported languages to a whopping 133.

The new additions are the first where something called Zero-Shot Machine Translation was used – where a machine learning model only sees monolingual text. It learns to translate in another language without ever seeing a translation example. Although technically this is impressive, it also means that the accuracy of translations in other languages is not as high, at least for now. Google promises to improve the quality of its results.

The newly added languages are spoken by a total of over 300 million people across the globe, including 800,000 in the far northeast of India, and 45 million people in Central Africa. Some indigenous languages from the Americas and an English dialect were added for the first time.

The full list is: Assamese, Aymara, Bambara, Bhojpuri, Dhivehi, Dogri, Ewe, Guarani, Ilocano, Konkani, Krio, Kurdish (Sorani), Lingala, Luganda, Maithili, Meiteilon (Manipuri), Mizo, Oromo, Quechua, Sanskrit, Sepedi, Tigrinya, Tsonga, and Twi.

Smite launches Slipknot crossover with skins of all the band members

Smite launches Slipknot crossover with skins of all the band members

We live in an era of pop culture crossovers, with tons of video game rosters now including icons from other mediums like hit films or popular Netflix shows. Captain Jack Sparrow’s in Sea of Thieves, Sasuke and Ariana Grande are duking it out in Fortnite, and now the band Slipknot is coming to Smite as part of a set of skins.

Smite is a third-person battle arena game, à la League of Legends, with a cast made up of the Gods and champions of various pantheons. A typical match can see characters like Athena, Cthulhu, Jormungandr, and Morgan le Fay get into a scrap. Now, three of those Gods (Poseidon, Chaac, and Raijin) will be able to roll up to the match in lovingly detailed skins of Slipknot’s band members. Poseidon gets some sweet cosplay of Sid Wilson, Corey Taylor, and Craig Jones; Chaac has skins of Mick Thomson, Jim Root, and Alessandro Venturella, and Raijin gets to dress up as Michael Pfaff, Shawn “Clown” Crahan, and Jay Weinberg.

Let me hear you scream! @slipknot is here to put on a show in SMITE!

While pop culture crossovers are pretty popular in everything from Fall Guys to Call of Duty, this specific blend feels particularly intriguing and unexpected. The update is planned to be released later this month.

Apple: Most iOS 15 users opt out of personalized ads; no impact on App Store Search Ads conversions

Apple: Most iOS 15 users opt out of personalized ads; no impact on App Store Search Ads conversions

Apple is growing its Search Ads business. In a presentation to advertising clients today, obtained by 9to5Mac, the company emphasizes that even as Search Ads continue to grow, the vast majority of users are opting for an experience that doesn’t rely on personalized advertising.

App Store Search Ads and personalized ads

Apple will present this briefing today to advertising partners. It explains that Apple Search Ads helps “advertisers expand their businesses while giving users control over their data how it is used.”

Apple’s emphasis in today’s presentation, according to a slide deck obtained by 9to5Mac, is that Search Ads rely very little on personalized targeting, and conversion rates are virtually unaffected.

With iOS 15, Apple added a new prompt when a user opens the App Store for the first time. The prompt explains personalized ads “help you discover apps, products, and services that are relevant to you.” The prompt gives users the ability to turn on personalized ads or to turn them off.

According to data aggregated by Apple, 78% of iOS search volume on the App Store came from devices with personalized ads turned off. This effectively means that 78% of users are opting to “Turn Off Personalized Ads” when they see the prompt for the first time in the App Store.

Additional data from Apple shows that personalized ads enable users convert nearly the same amount of people as those without personalized ads. For customers who opted in to personalized ads, advertisers see a 62. 1% conversion rate. Among users with personalized ads disabled, that conversion rate is 62.5%.

In the presentation to advertisers, Apple explains that many developers would be better off by targeting users who have personalized ads disabled. This is because the pool of users with personalized ads disabled is larger than the pool of users who opted in is much smaller.

App Store Search Ads are priced with auction-based, bidding system. Because there are more users who have disabled personalized ads, prices will be lower. And again, the ads are just as effective, if not more effective.

Finally, it’s important to remember that this data applies solely to Apple’s first-part advertising efforts in the App Store. It is not referring to App Tracking Transparency, which applies to third-party advertising.

Trendforce: Smartphone market will decline in 2022 due to COVID, inflation

Trendforce: Smartphone market will decline in 2022 due to COVID, inflation

Trendforce has published today a report in which it predicts that smartphone shipments will drop in calendar 2022. Performance in Q1 2022 was unimpressive, and the downward trajectory is predicted to continue in the second quarter as China is struggling with its “zero COVID” policy.

The total production forecast for the entire year is 1. 333 billion devices, which is less than 2021, and Trendforce even warned that there is still room for negative revisions in the future.

Trendforce: Smartphone sales in 2022 will decline due to inflation

Trendforce says that the key reason for this poor market performance is China’s lockdown. This is impacting the overall economy and resulting in fewer smartphone buyers. The country is expected to experience a sharp 13% decline compared to last year.

The landscape will remain challenging in the second half of 2022. Even if/when China manages to escape its current COVID situation, the inflation crisis will affect other markets. There’s also the Indian market that cannot keep sustained growth for an extended period.

Trendforce’s perspective of the national shipment share is that China will remain the most significant market, but it will shrink from 24. 2% to 21. 1%, followed by India with 13. 1% of all shipments, with the United States coming in third with 11%.
