Google Pixel Buds Pro with smart ANC + pressure releasing sensors are right on point

Google Pixel Buds Pro with smart ANC + pressure releasing sensors are right on point

With the mild success of the 2020 Pixel Buds and the Pixel Buds A-Series on its back, Google is now looking to turn the tables in the ANC earbuds market with its latest creation. The long-rumored Pixel Buds Pro have arrived! They offer features that are hard to ignore for anyone, even grumpiest users.

The true wireless earbuds were announced at Google I/O. They are designed to address the unique nuances audio listeners experience every day. These earbuds are not just noise-isolating accessories. They compete directly with the Apple AirPods Pro. The Pixel Buds Pro will be an integral part of the ecosystem Google is creating with their latest launches at the even including Pixel 6A and Pixel Tablet. Something that tries to replicate the closely-knit ecosystem created by Apple. The ability to seamlessly switch between devices thanks to the multipoint Bluetooth connectivity and software integration. So, you could be listening to a podcast on your phone, and then seamlessly switch to your computer for Zoom calls.

Designer: Google

The new buds were designed to accommodate the varied ear shapes and sizes of thousands. Top that off with the advanced active noise canceling technology honed by the custom-built-6-core audio chip that adapts to the environment to provide the best isolation. Google’s Silent Seal technology is an improvement on the previous one. It uses sensors to adjust the pressure within the ear canal, ensuring maximum comfort. This feature also adapts to the user’s ear and listening habits to provide apt noise cancellation in any environment.

These earbuds are IPX4 rated for water and sweat resistance making them ideal for an active lifestyle. Easy music control and volume adjustment are possible with the intuitive touch controls. These buds are perfect for calling as they have bone condition technology to detect speech. The beamforming microphones, wind-resistant mesh covers, and the voice accelerometer all combine to make sure you hear the person on the other end loud and clear, and vice versa – no matter how noisy the external environment is.

For audio quality fanatics, the buds produce clean sound powered by Google’s algorithms beaming sound via the custom drivers. The in-house audio engineers have done a great job with software tuning. A good example of this is the Volume EQ function, which adjusts the lows and mids according to the volume. Audiophiles will appreciate this feature, which produces a balanced audio profile and a rich audio sound.

The dual-color design gives the buds a unique look. It comes in four colors – Coral Fog Charcoal, Lemongrass, and Charcoal – which adds some zing. In fact, Google senior vice president of devices and services Rick Osterloh said in a media briefing that the Pixel Buds Pro is the “best mobile audio hardware we’ve ever designed.”

Google Pixel Buds Pro claim to have 11 hours of listening with ANC turned off and around seven hours without them. With the wireless charging capable case, that number can be increased to another 13 hours in ANC mode. The buds will be available for pre-order from July 21 onwards for a price tag of $199 and shipping starts July 28.

Master Chief has sex in Halo episode 8, but the episode’s still not great

Master Chief has sex in Halo episode 8, but the episode’s still not great

Paramount Plus’ Halo series has finally achieved what the games never could: Letting Master Chief have sex. Halo has included plenty of scenes of John getting in touch with his humanity after his UNSC brainwashing, and the latest episode is the most vulnerable and emotional yet. It seems that he may have sex with someone else, which could lead to more death and destruction.

[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for Halo up to episode 8 of season 1.]

In case you haven’t been keeping track of Halo so far, it’s mostly been about strange Forerunner artifacts and the connection that Master Chief has to them as a “Blessed One.” The series includes a human member of the Covenant named Makee, who is also a Blessed One. Makee is the Covenant’s only visible character in this series. This may be because CGI aliens can be expensive and he was assigned to serve as the double agent for the Covenant among human beings.

Shortly after she arrives in humanity’s care, however, Makee’s loyalty to the Covenant falters, largely because of the kindness shown to her by Master Chief. The other side of this relationship is Makee, who helps Master Chief to regain his humanity after learning about how he was kidnapped as a child by UNSC and the brainwashing that Dr. Halsey gave him.

At the end of the show’s sixth episode, the pair’s connection is solidified when it’s revealed that their Blessed One status connects them. They share an emotional moment with the Forerunner artifacts and are given a momentary vision of the Halo rings.

This week, in episode 8, with the bond of Halo-visions between them, Makee and John finally hook up — while Cortana watches and makes a somewhat creepy, supposed-to-be-sweet face. Makee even removes her Covenant-installed fingernail sword (yes, really) because she’s so moved by her rediscovered love of humanity. As weird as the whole thing is, it actually fits pretty neatly within the show’s weird off-kilter sentimentality and the odd story it’s telling about Master Chief.

Unfortunately, Halo immediately returns to its worst tendencies after as everyone in the show starts to make strange out-of-character decisions to jump-start the plot once again. There’s a big Spartan versus Spartan fight, Miranda Keyes makes an extremely rash decision for no reason, and that one guard who keeps calling the Covenant “squid heads” — despite that making no sense at all — shocks Makee with a stun baton, just like in her flashback from earlier this season.

Madee once more attacks humanity as a concept by the end of this episode and may be trying to team up with Dr. Halsey in order to control the universe through Halo.

So Master Chief doesn’t get to enjoy having a girlfriend for very long. Chief and Cortana have become friends, which is a plus.

Review: Nomad Base One Max offers MagSafe and Apple Watch charging in a premium design [Video]

Review: Nomad Base One Max offers MagSafe and Apple Watch charging in a premium design [Video]

Following up on the Base One premium MagSafe charger, Nomad debuted its Base One Max recently with the same high-end glass and aluminum design plus an integrated Apple Watch charger. Follow along for a detailed look at how this official MagSafe dual charger for iPhone and Apple Watch stands apart from the competition.

After reviewing the Base One, I found it to successfully deliver a premium experience both aesthetically and functionally. And the Base One Max has the same attributes like the beautiful solid glass and aluminum design, 15W MagSafe wireless charging for iPhone, and a delightfully weighty build.

Base One Max specs

  • Official MFi certified MagSafe with 15W fast wireless charging for iPhone
  • Integrated Apple Watch charger
  • Powered via USB-C (6.6 ft nylon braided cable included)
  • All metal and glass design
  • Super solid build weighing in at 1.98 pounds (900 grams)
  • Priced at $149.99

Base One Max in use

Just like the Base One, the Base One Max comes in silver and carbide gray (black/very dark gray). I find the design in both colorways really classy. I kind of think of it as a beautiful, compact sculpture that happens to charge your iPhone and Apple Watch. It looks great in any space you put it.

The two-pound weight of the Base One Max is lovely and means it’s not moving at all when removing your devices.

As is the case with the Base One, the Max isn’t going to be the right fit for everyone with a premium price of $149 to match the high-end materials and build.

But as I wrote previously, in a market dominated by cheap plastic chargers, it’s good to see a premium dual MagSafe/Apple Watch charger that should last a lifetime, looks wonderful, and doesn’t spare any detail.

Nomad Base One Max MagSafe charger

One difference between the Base One Max and its smaller sibling is the area around the Apple Watch charger. It features a clean granite/quartz type of material. It has a smooth finish and complements the aluminum and glass very nicely.

Nomad Base One Max MagSafe charger full review

The entire bottom of the charger is made up of non-slip rubber or silicone with feet to give it a bit of lift.

Nomad Base One Max wrap-up

After testing out both the Base One and Base One Max, I think if you’re in the market for a premium MagSafe charger, these should be on your shortlist.

And for everyone out there with an Apple Watch, the Base One Max is a bit more compelling with the integrated wearable charger for just $20 more than the Base One. Just don’t forget you’ll need to pick up a 30W power adapter if you don’t have a spare one.

Base One Max is available direct from Nomad priced at $149.99.

Alan Wake Remastered coming to Nintendo Switch

Alan Wake Remastered coming to Nintendo Switch

In a video released by Remedy Entertainment ahead of the 12th anniversary of Alan Wake‘s release, creative director Sam Lake announced that Alan Wake Remastered is coming to Nintendo Switch.

The first minute features Ilkka Villi (voice actor, model, and voice actress for Alan Wake), playing on the Xbox One a version of the game. Remedy Entertainment released a press release stating that the game would launch only as a digital Nintendo Switch title and will run natively on hardware. The developer said it will announce a release date “in the coming months,” closer to the game’s launch.

In addition to the news of Alan Wake Remastered on Switch, Lake said that while development on Alan Wake 2, which is slated to release next year, is going well, the developer will not be showing any new footage of the game this summer. “To create a proper, polished demo or a trailer takes a lot of effort, and it’s several months of work that could take away from development,” Lake said in the video. “We feel that we have momentum going, and we want to make sure we are creating the best, and first, survival horror game for Remedy.

Remedy Entertainment has shared some new concept art for the game.

Lake also shared that the rights to the Alan Wake TV series, which was announced all the way back in 2018, have been purchased by AMC Networks. The press release stated that the series still has a lot of work to be made a reality. “But we are excited, to say the least, about this latest development.”

Vampire Survivors guide: Survive 31 minutes, kill Death

Vampire Survivors guide: Survive 31 minutes, kill Death

Vampire Survivors is all about surviving in a sea of classic movie monsters. But once you reach the thirty-minute mark, the game ends with Death swooping in and killing you instantly. However, there is a way you can survive this encounter, and even defeat the grim reaper.

In this guide we’ll teach you how to survive for over 31 minutes in the Inlaid Library to unlock the Disco of Gold Arcana and defeat Death to unlock the secret Red Death character.

Before the run

For both surviving Death and eventually defeating him (the latter being the much harder task of the two), you’ll need to have already spent a lot of gold on upgrades and power ups. If you don’t have enough gold to buy most of the upgrades, this is probably a task best saved for later in your Vampire Survivors journey.

If you’re ready to take on Death, though, purchase all the power-ups except for three: Growth, Curse, and Magnet. If you’re low on gold, you can also ignore Greed for this purpose. (Note that you can easily refund your gold if you’ve already invested in the three power-ups listed above).

When your power-ups are set up, select the Inlaid Library map, turn hyper mode on (and hurry mode off), and select Clerici as your character (whom you unlock by regenerating 1,000 health total).

Now, start the run.

Setup

A hero uses a special spot to survive in Vampire Survivors

Image: Poncle via Polygon

Once you load in, select the Awake or Slash Arcanas before you start. Once you have control of Clerici, you need to move fast.

Walk up and to your left. Grab the green gem to instantly level up once and grab Runetracer. If Runetracer doesn’t appear in your options, reroll until you get it or quit and restart — Runetracer is mandatory for this strategy.

Once you have Runetracer, quickly run around the table to your left and walk up into the little cubby. Place Clerici’s right hand (when she’s facing you) just under the clock. Her head should be in-line with the left-most crack in the bookshelf. Check the image above and mimic our placement.

At this point, you should still be level two. If you’ve accidentally leveled up to level three or higher, back out and try again.

If you’re in the correct position and still a low level, you’ll shoot out a massive Runetracer, blocking the entrance to the nook. This is due to Clerici’s special bonus, which increases the area of her weapons while she’s still low level.

All you need to do now is wait until 30 minutes. You might take some damage on occasion, and you might die. But if you’re dying regularly, you’re likely out of position. This isn’t an exact science and there is some luck involved.

Killing Death

After 30 minutes, Death will kill everything and swoop into the map. Once you see him, quickly run out and look for the red gem on the floor. This gem will have dozens of levels worth of XP in it.

As you grab XP and chests on the way to the gem, here are the items you’re looking for:

  • Santa Water
  • Runetracer
  • Laurel
  • Clock Lancet
  • Bracer
  • Spellbinder
  • Empty Tome
  • Candelabrador

Knife, Bone, Attractorb, and Magic Wand are all good additions to fill in the rest of the build.

Once you’re set up and leveled up, grab the chests around you and try to evolve your weapons. (Your Laurel should be protecting you from Death and Clock Lancet should be freezing him).

With your build fully put together, position yourself behind the table, on the other side of the clock, and unleash hell on Death.

By using this method, you should definitely be able to reach 31 minutes and unlock the Disco of Gold Aracana. Killing Death, on the other hand, is a bit more of a crapshoot. Keep focused on him and he’ll eventually die. If he or his other Death cronies defeat you, restart and try again using this same method.

2017’s best game, Prey, is free on Epic Games Store

2017’s best game, Prey, is free on Epic Games Store

Epic Games is offering three new games for free on its Epic Games Store this week: Thunder Lotus’ Jotun: Valhalla Edition, Arkane Studio’s Prey, and 34BigThings SRL’s Redout: Enhanced Edition.

Epic has announced the free Thursday lineup on Twitter . All three will be available for free until May 19, when a new free game become available. Jotun was released in 2019, and is described as “a hand-drawn action-exploration game set in Norse mythology,” while Redout came out in 2016 — it’s a space racing game. The standout, however, is Prey, which was released in 2017 by publisher Bethesda Softworks.

The first-person space shooter was critically-acclaimed at its release. Polygon named it one of 2017’s best games, calling it “a game about identity, wrapped in the clothing of a first-person shooter.”

Epic Games has committed to giving people weekly free games throughout 2022. In 2021, it offered 89 free games; in total, 656 million free games were claimed. Games that were downloaded in the weekly rotation will be available for a short time, but they will remain free forever in a player’s Epic Games Store library.

Apple highlights three AAPI founders who build apps on the App Store that foster community

Apple highlights three AAPI founders who build apps on the App Store that foster community

In celebration of May being Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage month, Apple has highlighted three app founders who cultivate community within their technology. The founders of Coffee Meets Bagel, Weee!, and HmongPhrases sat down with Apple to share their reflections on creating their App Store apps.

Coffee Meets Bagel

Founded by Dawoon Kang and her twin sister Arum, they teamed up to make a dating app with a “slower approach.” On Coffee Meets Bagel, it’s not about getting the most likes, it’s about building meaningful conversations. As one of the App Store’s most popular dating apps, it has created over 150 million matches so far.

I knew from the very beginning that dating is a cultural phenomenon, and it was important to have diverse representation in our workforce and our dater research. I can empathize with others thanks to my upbringing as a minority, but my perspective is also limited to my own experiences.

According to Kang, the AAPI community makes up over 45% of the app’s user base. The community sends 1.6x more chat messages each day and 1.3x more chat messages per connection than any other community on the app in the US.

Weee!

Larry Liu is the founder of Weee!, a grocery delivery app helping bring widespread access to both Asian and Hispanic foods. The inspiration for the app came from when he first immigrated to the US from China and was looking for a wider selection of Asian groceries. He didn’t want to be limited to the small “ethnic” aisle at major grocery chains.

Food brings people together. It’s about shared culture, community, and identity, and a celebration of life. Changing grocery shopping from a rote chore into something fun and shareable is a crucial part of Weee!. Consumers are rewarded for sharing their thoughts and recommendations with the community of shoppers. Weee! also creates a feeling of being at home and being seen, particularly for immigrants, but also for second- and third-generation consumers who can access ingredients to make their mom’s congee, or whatever their favorite comfort food or snack is.

Weee! has brought in an array of products that customers in the US haven’t had for many years. Customers have found they resonated with the belief that food is meant to be shared together. Liu states, “I hope we can leverage our understanding of diverse cultures. In a world that is fast globalizing, that can be a huge asset.”

HmongPhrases

HmongPhrases started with Annie Vang, who participated in the Apple Entrepreneur Camp last year. As a member of the Hmong community, Vang seeks to preserve the dialect for future generations through her app. As one of the most marginalized Asian groups, the Hmong have been in the US for over 40 years. Within the app, you can learn the Hmong dialect. Vang not only codes the app herself, she also records the phrases in her own voice.

Not many people know who the Hmong people are because we don’t have a country of our own. My vision for HmongPhrases is to serve as a digital footprint to preserve the language for future generations and anyone who wants to learn Hmong. I also hope that the app can help bridge the language gap.

Vang also mentions the process has been hard not seeing many other AAPI women creating apps. Her work has taught her to step outside her comfort zone and set aside any social norms of what it means to be an Asian woman.

PlayStation Extended Play sale: 21 games to pick up

PlayStation Extended Play sale: 21 games to pick up

The PlayStation store launched a massive sale earlier this week called Extended Play, and it highlights some incredible PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles. The sale runs for two full weeks, ending May 25.

The sale advertises up to 70% off, but the available discounts are actually quite a bit better than that in some cases. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s Complete Edition is 80% off, for example. And while not over 70%, there are some relatively new games, like Deathloop, that are over 50% off.

We’ve highlighted 21 games in this Extended Play sale — focusing mostly on classic PlayStation 4 titles you might have missed — that are absolutely worth the price PlayStation is offering:

  1. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Game of the Year Edition — $19.99 (PS4)
  2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition — $9.99 (PS4)
  3. Mass Effect Legendary Edition — $23.99 (PS4)
  4. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Gold Edition — $24.99 (PS4)
  5. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection — $9.99 (PS4)
  6. Watch Dogs 2 – Gold Edition — $17.99 (PS4)
  7. The Division 2: Warlords of New York – Ultimate Edition — $15.99 (PS4)
  8. Overcooked! + Overcooked! 2 — $10.49 (PS4)
  9. Xcom 2 Collection — $9.99 (PS4)
  10. Slime Rancher: Deluxe Edition — $8.99 (PS4)
  11. Darkest Dungeon: Ancestral Edition — $5.99 (PS4)
  12. Jurassic World Evolution Deluxe Edition — $10.99 (PS4)
  13. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate — $14.99 (PS4 & PS5)
  14. Back 4 Blood: Deluxe Edition — $44.99 (PS4 & PS5)
  15. Immortals Fenyx Rising Gold Edition — $24.99 (PS4 & PS5)
  16. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Master Edition Digital Deluxe — $37.49 (PS4)
  17. Wolfenstein: Alt History Collection — $23.99 (PS4)
  18. Frostpunk: Complete Collection — $17.99 (PS4)
  19. Ruined King: A League of Legends Story – Deluxe Edition — $25.99 (PS4)
  20. Dead Cells: Road to the Sea Bundle — $23.09 (PS4)
  21. Deathloop Deluxe Edition — $39.99 (PS4 or PS5)

Many of the sales we’ve highlighted here are enhanced, deluxe, gold, complete, or some other form of bonus edition. In most cases, the cheaper versions of these games are also on sale with Extended Play. So if you don’t care about getting all the content, consider picking a less advanced edition to save even more.
