Elden Ring turned me into the bully

Elden Ring turned me into the bully

I’ve had it with these jerks.

My first attempt at Elden Ring did not go well. My valiant efforts to chip away at any opponent’s health felt like a toothpick poking a cinder block. Power stancing helped, yes, and hemorrhage weapons got me past my fair share of scraps. But I succeeded by the skin of my teeth. Margit, Godrick, and Grave Warden Duelist were all jerks, and I could feel their joy as they tossed me around their respective arenas. Although I eventually achieved victories, they were slim.

Now, I’ve had six weeks away from the open-world epic. I got as far as beating Rennala before putting the game down to role-play as John Wick in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. When I came back to Elden Ring, I restarted completely. I could have respecced with the Queen of the Full Moon’s help, but something about a fresh start seemed more appealing. I wanted to see this world, complete in all of its magisterial beauty, without clenching my teeth at every turn.

I chose to restart as the Vagabond, and nostalgia kicked in immediately, taking me back to the first time I awoke in Dark Souls’ Northern Undead Asylum before finding a sword and shield with which to batter the zombie horde. Elden Ring’s heartiest starting class gave me an early edge in the Vigor department, and its Strength stat (second only to the Warrior class) meant I could pummel foes from the outset. I could also withstand — or at least mitigate — the vast majority of enemy attacks. By the time I had entered the open world, the block, counterattack, stun lock muscle memory had already come rushing back.

A strength-build character against the Onyx Lord in a Liurnia evergaol in Elden Ring

If this evergaol had a toilet, I would have given this guy a swirly
Image: FromSoftware/Bandai Namco via Polygon

I shield-bashed my way across the Weeping Peninsula. I beat the living ass out of Leonine Misbegotten. I one-shot Margit with the help of my Lone Wolf Ashes and my watermelon triceps, and blocked each of Godrick’s attacks before circling around to give him an atomic wedgie with my Omen Cleaver. He crumpled to the ground and disappeared in a cloud of gold, and as I breathed a sigh of relief, I also felt a pang of pity. I had bullied the bully, and in doing so, I had become the very thing I used to hate.

Here at Polygon, we’ve lauded Elden Ring’s flexibility several times over. We’ve also praised Elden Ring’s willingness to encourage flexibility. Much of FromSoftware’s catalog has already done this to some extent, but The Lands Between is so packed with magical armor, mysterious armaments, and helpful NPCs that there are numerous ways to mount every hurdle. Elden Ring is not only the newest in a legacy of games that act as crucibles to test your character builds, but also that legacy’s most approachable incarnation.

In my first playthrough, I was a mere pest. But this time around, I’ve created a character that doesn’t put up with shit. Runebear could only nick my stamina bar, and Radagon’s Red Wolf couldn’t interrupt a single swipe of my Grafted Blade Greatsword. I’m the one tossing these would-be bullies around now. I’m making these jerks look like dorks. My new playthrough is the second act of Mean Girls, where the bullied Cady Heron fights back against Regina George only to become a bully herself.

The difference here is that I refuse to come down from my perch. I’m the Matt Wilson to Margit’s Encino Man. I am the Vice Principal Vernon to Royal Knight Loretta’s Breakfast Club. I am Tony Perkis, and Rennala is a gaggle of pubescent boys. I’ve become the bully and it’s served me well, and a dark part of me now understands the allure of punching down in FromSoft’s cruel world. Here, Johnny Lawrence will always sweep Danny LaRusso’s legs. In The Lands Between, O’Doyle will always rule.

iPhone 14 Pro Max previewed with design mock-ups in hands-on video

iPhone 14 Pro Max previewed with design mock-ups in hands-on video

As we’re only about four months away from an iPhone 14 launch, Apple fans alike are stoked for the new device. YouTuber Unbox Therapy previews a CAD (computer-aided design) mock-up of an iPhone 14 Pro Max made in Japan.

Upon first look, the mock-up looks identical to the iPhone 13 Pro Max. However, based on the mock-up device, there are a few differences between the two generations.

iPhone 14 Pro Max feels a bit bigger

With an iPhone 13 Pro Max in hand, Unbox Therapy notes that the mock-up feels a touch fatter than the 13 Pro Max. The camera bump is noticeably bigger, making the device a tad heavier. The power and volume buttons are slightly larger too. There are also no visible antenna bands on the side of the device.

The mock-up also shows that the bezels are slightly smaller but not enough to require any tweaks in the iOS interface.

Goodbye to the notch

We also expect that both the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will have a “pill + hole punch” cutout instead of a notch. That’s what the model in the video shows – great news for those who despise the notch. Additionally, the iPhone 15 lineup is expected to feature the “pill + hole punch” cutout as well.

No USB-C yet

USB-C stans will have to wait longer as the iPhone 14 lineup is likely to still feature a lightning port, as seen on the mock-up. Reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the iPhone 15 lineup will be the first to use a USB-C port.

9to5Mac’s Take

This new mock-up seems to follow everything we’ve seen so far regarding the iPhone 14 Pro Max. It feels a bit dull that the device looks identical to the past two generations, but progress is a gradual thing. Only a few more months to go to see if these predictions will come to fruition. Overall, if you’re used to an iPhone 13 Pro Max, holding the 14 Pro Max shouldn’t feel any different.

Silent Hill 2 remake among multiple Silent Hill games in development

Silent Hill 2 remake among multiple Silent Hill games in development

The unannounced Silent Hill game that appeared to leak last week is just one of multiple games in development based on the franchise, according to a report from Video Games Chronicle. One of those projects is reportedly a remake of Silent Hill 2, the beloved PlayStation 2 horror game from 2001.

VGC cites multiple sources, as well as rumors from VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb and YouTuber Nate the Hate, in a report that says The Medium and Observer developer Bloober Team is tackling the remake of Silent Hill 2. The remake is said to feature improvements, new puzzles, and several new endings, and may arrive as a timed PlayStation exclusive.

Konami also has a new mainline entry in the Silent Hill series in development, VGC says, and last week’s leak was related to a P.T.-like teaser coming to promote that brand-new game. VGC also says that other studios, including Until Dawn studios Supermassive Games and publisher Annapurna Interactive have been involved in developing or pitching Silent Hill projects.

Konami hasn’t released a new game in the franchise since 2012’s Silent Hill: Book of Memories, with the exception of the playable teaser for Silent Hills that was once in development at Kojima Productions. In 2021, Konami announced a partnership with Bloober Team, saying that the Polish developer was collaborating with Konami on “potential projects across our various IP.”

The original Silent Hill 2 was developed by Konami’s Team Silent, and starred protagonist James Sunderland in a survival horror story of grief and guilt. Silent Hill 2 solidified the series’ visual design by introducing iconic monsters like Pyramid Head and the Bubble Head Nurse, and features one of the franchise’s most beloved and bizarre alternate endings, featuring a shiba inu. Originally released for PS2, Silent Hill 2 was later ported to the original Xbox and Windows PC. It was featured in the Silent Hill HD Collection released in 2012, paired with Silent Hill 3.

tvOS 15.5, watchOS 8.6, and HomePod Software 15.5 now available to the public

tvOS 15.5, watchOS 8.6, and HomePod Software 15.5 now available to the public

Following the release of iOS 15.5 and macOS Monterey 12.4 to all users, Apple on Monday also made tvOS 15.5, watchOS 8.6, and HomePod Software 15.5 available to the public. The updates bring overall improvements with no major changes.

tvOS 15.5

Apple doesn’t specify what has changed with tvOS 15.5, so we assume that the update just fixes some bugs and improves the performance of the operating system for Apple TV users.

The update is now available for Apple TV HD (4th generation) and later users. You can install the latest version of tvOS by going to Settings > System > Software Update.

watchOS 8.6

As for watchOS 8.6, the update enables the ECG app and irregular rhythm notifications for Apple Watch users in Mexico. With the ECG app, users can take an electrocardiogram directly from their wrist.

According to the release notes, the update also includes “improvements and bug fixes.”

watchOS 8.6 is available for Apple Watch Series 3 and later, and you can download the update by going to the Watch app on your iPhone.

HomePod Software 15.5

Just like tvOS 15.5, it’s unclear what’s new in HomePod Software 15.5, as Apple says that the update comes with “general performance and stability improvements.”

Users can update their HomePods through the Home app on an iOS device.

Apple releases macOS 12.4 with new Podcasts features and separate Studio Display webcam fix

Apple releases macOS 12.4 with new Podcasts features and separate Studio Display webcam fix

Apple has officially released its latest update for Mac with support for new Podcasts app features as well as the Studio Display webcam fix. While the Studio Display 15.5 beta came inside the macOS update, it’s now available as a separate release.

macOS 12.4 is now available via OTA for all users. Head to System Preferences > Software Update to see if it’s showing up for your Mac.

We didn’t see much new in the first macOS 12.4 beta but Apple did include a warning that Universal Control functionality will require a Mac to be on the latest beta if an iPad is running iPadOS 15.5.

  • PSA: Universal Control in iPadOS 15.5 requires all devices run the latest beta

With the third macOS 12.4 beta, Apple seeded the first beta for the Apple Studio Display with a fix for the webcam:

  • Apple releases Studio Display Firmware 15.5 beta for developers, webcam fixes included

Then we learned that with the public macOS 12.4 release, Apple would make the Studio Display 15.5 update separate from the macOS build.

  • Studio Display Firmware 15.5 with webcam improvements to be available soon as a separate update

Another change coming with macOS 12.4 is a new setting in the Podcasts app to limit the number of episodes stored and automatically delete old content.

macOS 12.4 release notes:

  • Apple Podcasts includes a new setting to limit episodes stored on your Mac and automatically delete older ones
  • Support for Studio Display Firmware Update 15.5, available as a separate update, refines camera tuning, including improved noise reduction, contrast, and framing

Sony shares list of games for its three-tier PlayStation Plus subscription

Sony shares list of games for its three-tier PlayStation Plus subscription

Back in March, Sony detailed its new subscription tiers for PlayStation Plus – Essential, Plus Extra, and Plus Premium.

Depending on the tier, you get access to different games and features. For $9.99 per month, Essential nets you two PS4 and one PS5 game to download each month, online multiplayer, and other core features. Plus Extra costs $14.99 and adds access to the Game Catalog with hundreds of downloadable PS4 and PS5 titles. For $17.99, Plus Premium adds time-limited game trials (2 hours per game), the Classic Catalog, and cloud streaming.

Now Sony has detailed which games will be included in the Plus subscription, as well as the dates when the new service will go live in different parts of the world. Asia will get PlayStation Plus on May 24, Japan on June 2, North and South America will get it on June 13, and Europe, Australia, and New Zealand will get access on June 23.

However, Sony won’t include new first-party games in the subscription package. Meaning that titles like Horizon Zero Dawn, Forbidden West, or Grand Turismo 7 won’t come to PlayStation Plus at first.

Here are the games. Firstly, the first and third-party games, coming to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers.

Genshin Impact developers release Shikanoin Heizou’s design

Genshin Impact developers release Shikanoin Heizou’s design

Hoyoverse on Monday revealed the new drip marketing for Genshin Impact’s newest character, Shikanoin Heizou. While new characters regularly come to the free-to-play game, this highly anticipated character’s design surprised fans, and now they can’t stop talking about him.

Shikanoin Heizou (also known as Doushin Shikanoin) is an Anemo character who serves as a detective for the Tenryou Commission in Inazuma. The announcement describes Heizou as “free-spirited and unruly, but cheerful and lively.” The release comes with an endorsement from the head of the Kamisato clan himself, Kamisato Ayato, who said, “While [Heizou] is unfettered and unrestrained in demeanor, one should not dismiss his talents.”

“Doushin Shikanoin has admirable wit and insight. While he is unfettered and unrestrained in demeanor, one should not dismiss his talents. The Tenryou Commission is incredibly fortunate to have such a man in their ranks.” – Kamisato Ayato#GenshinImpact pic.twitter.com/lM0HNfZktr

— Genshin Impact (@GenshinImpact) May 16, 2022

Beyond the design, the official Genshin Impact page didn’t reveal all the much. Lumie, a well-established and credible leaker in the Genshin Impact community shared that Heizou would be a catalyst, making him the first male catalyst in the game.

Heizou’s design reveal both surprised and delighted fans. Many fans were expecting to get a character that resembled a male version of the Pyro character Hu Tao, but Hoyoverse ended up taking Heizou in a different direction. He has purple hair, green eyes, and cute freckles, and fans are already all over TikTok on Twitter fawning over the character in videos and fan art.

One TikTok shows a person just sharing their excitement, “Holy fuck he’s GORGEOUS.”

Others have already made fan comics of him. People seem to like his top, which I’ll describe as a fancy muscle tee that’s been cut out completely on the sides.

Others are excited to get another Anemo boy, who can fit right in with Venti, Xiao, and Kazuha.

There are just loads of people excited for another Anemo character.

We don’t know his official height yet, but it looks like he might be another short boy as well. Here a comic makes a playful height comparison to another shortie, Xiao.

Hopefully now Kazuha will have a little Anemo buddy to join him Inazuma.

At the moment, Genshin Impact’s next 2.7 update has been delayed and we don’t know when we can expect Heizou in-game. He joins the ranks of other newly announced characters like Yelan and Kuki Shinobu who have yet to join the game as playable characters. Until he arrives, we’ll just have to be content with fan content.

Apple releases iOS 15.5 with enhancements to Apple Cash and Podcasts app

Apple on Monday released iOS 15.5 and iPadOS 15.5 to the public following the release of the RC build last week. The update doesn’t bring significant changes, but it does improve the Apple Cash and Podcasts app.

  • Wallet now enables Apple Cash customers to send and request money from their Apple Cash card
  • Apple Podcasts includes a new setting to limit episodes stored on your iPhone and automatically delete older ones
  • Fixes an issue where home automations, triggered by people arriving or leaving, may fail

Fall Guys going free-to-play, coming to Switch and Xbox in June

Fall Guys going free-to-play, coming to Switch and Xbox in June

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, the bean-based battle royale game that launched in 2020, is going free-to-play in June, developer Mediatonic announced Monday. Fall Guys will also make its long-awaited debut on new platforms, including Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles, and on the Epic Games Store.

All versions of the game (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X) will support cross-play and cross-progression, using Mediatonic-owner Epic Games’ online services. Fall Guys was originally expected to hit Switch and Xbox in the summer of 2021, but those versions were delayed so Mediatonic could add cross-play features.

Fall Guys’ transition to a free-to-play model will coincide with a new season, titled Free For All, that will feature new challenges and rewards, new events and locations, “major updates to the game’s progression systems,” and a new in-game currency: Show-Bucks. Players can purchase Fall Guys’ season pass with Show-Bucks, but there will also be a free progression track.

Existing players — folks who paid for Fall Guys — will get free cosmetics in a Legacy Pack bundle and the Free For All season pass for investing early in Fall Guys.

Fall Guys’ free-to-play launch, and new console versions of the game, will arrive on June 21.

Verizon raising prices for wireless plans with new ‘economic adjustment charge’

Verizon raising prices for wireless plans with new ‘economic adjustment charge’

Two weeks ago, AT&T announced that it would be increasing prices for many of its legacy subscribers starting in June. Now, Verizon is following suit with its own round of price increases for consumer and business accounts. This marks the first time that Verizon has raised prices in two years.

Verizon price increases are coming

Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg first raised the possibility of increasing prices back in April, citing ongoing inflation concerns. Vestberg stopped short of saying price increases were definitively coming, instead saying that the company had “plans to be prepared for what it takes,” including “different types of cost adjustments.”

This marks the first time that Verizon has increased prices on these customers in two years. However, the company has increased prices on customers grandfathered into older plans as recently as late 2021.

Verizon is taking a different approach to raising prices this time. The advertised pricing of Verizon’s actual plans will stay the same, but it will begin adding a new “economic adjustment charge” to your bill every month.

The news was first reported by Bloomberg and Verizon confirmed the changes through its representatives. According to the company, the “economic adjustment charge” will be $1.35 per voice line for consumers. For instance, if you have 4 people on your family plan, this means your monthly cost will increase will be around $5.50.

Note that the increase applies only to voice lines per account. For instance, if you have four voice lines and two data only iPad lines on your account, your increase will only be based on the four voice lines.

Business customers will see a bigger increase every month, with data plans increasing by $2.20 per month and “basic service plans” increasing by $0.98 per month.

Verizon says these price increases will go into effect beginning with customer bills sent out in June. The increase on business accounts will begin on June 16. Verizon started notifying consumers of this new “economic adjustment charge” today, while it has also been in direct contact with “some of its larger corporate clients” recently as well.

These changes follow price hikes on certain plans from AT&T last month, though AT&T notably excluded its newest Unlimited plans from the price changes. Verizon’s “economic adjustment charge” applies across the board to all plans.
