Apple Watch glass rumor revives flat-edge design for Series 8 or other models

Apple Watch glass rumor revives flat-edge design for Series 8 or other models

Less than six months away from Apple introducing Apple Watch Series 8, this upcoming smartwatch is again rumored to feature a flat-edge design. After leakers and analysts supported that Apple Watch Series 7 would be the one to feature this new look, rumors are now pointing out to this year’s model.

Tweeted originally by ShrimpApplePro and now highlighted by YouTuber Jon Prosser, who was the first to say that Apple Watch Series 7 would feature a flat-edge design, it seems Series 8 could have a new look, apart from more sensors.

ShrimpApple pro wrote :

Heard from source today that there is a flat front glass display for Apple Watch display. High change that this is the front glass for the Apple Watch Series 8. Haven’t heard any on how’s the redesign housing nor which model yet.

While Jon Prosser is also careful to confirm that this new design is indeed coming to the Apple Watch Series 8, both say that this could be the look of a future Watch.

ShrimpApplePro also brought back an old tweet about Apple Watch Series 7, in which they pretty much correctly predicted the model launched last year – except for the colors.

While no other analyst wants to bet on a redesign of the Apple Watch Series 8, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman believes this will be one of the biggest years for the Apple Watch, with up to three models being introduced.

He also says that Apple is readying a more powerful SoC and body-temperature sensor, which would be the newest sensor to be introduced since the blood oxygen measurement one with the Apple Watch Series 6.

Wall Street Journal also corroborated the rumor of a new sensor in a story shared a few months ago:

WSJ: “A planned use for the sensor in 2022 would be for fertility planning, the people said, giving women clues about where they are in their ovulation cycle.”

Would you like a flat-edge layout? If so, why? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Watch our Sony Xperia 10 IV video review

Watch our Sony Xperia 10 IV video review

If you have read our review of the Sony Xperia 10 IV you already know that the relatively small Android phone is a battery life champ. However, as Will explains in our video review below, there is a trade-off to be made.

The 5,000mAh battery is glacially slow to charge – it takes 2 and a half hours. The phone seems to support 20W or so fast charging, but in our tests it didn’t really make use of it, sticking close to the 10W mark for almost the entire charge cycle.

We tested several different chargers and got the same results
The cameras have improved processing

We tested several different chargers and got the same results * The cameras have improved processing

The Mark 4 does improve on the Mark 3 in several aspects like a brighter screen with Gorilla Glass Victus, more reliable telephoto camera, OIS for the main and improved processing. However, it missed out on some features that should be standard on a 2022 mid-ranger like faster charging, high refresh rate or 4K video recording (this is actually a regression from last year).

Is the Xperia 10 IV worth the EUR500 that Sony is charging for it? Our video review offers arguments for and against the Mark 4 to help you make up your mind.

Netflix customers canceling service increasingly includes long-term subscribers

Netflix customers canceling service increasingly includes long-term subscribers

Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers last quarter and potentially two million this current period, according to a note to shareholders from last month. New research has shown that long-standing customers are cancelling the streaming service more frequently in recent years.

The data provided by the research firm Antenna to The Information shows that people who had been subscribers for more than three years accounted for just 5% of total cancelations at the start of 2022, while it hit 13% in the first quarter of 2022.

Newbie subscribers, meantime, accounted for only 60% of cancellations in the quarter, down from 64% in the fourth quarter. Also in the first quarter, overall cancellations rose to 3. 6 million people, compared with around 2. 5 million in each of the preceding five quarters. Antenna says it draws its data from a panel of 5 million Americans who anonymously contribute their streaming subscriptions.

netflix-canceling-9to5mac-1

While Netflix is losing ground, the streaming market as a whole is gaining more subscribers, and Antenna’s data suggest a connection between the price increase and Netflix’s subscriber losses.

“Consumers vote with their wallets on a monthly basis, and now there are just more viable candidates on the ballot,” said Brendan Brady, media and entertainment lead at Antenna. He also said that Netflix had to rely on originals more than it did on Netflix, as many companies such as NBCUniversal or Disney have taken their shows off Netflix.

The data shows that for the first four months of 2022, Paramount+, Peacock, and Disney+ were the most popular options among new subscribers. One of the reasons is the fact that Paramount+ and Peacock are two of the most affordable services.

Although Antenna’s survey didn’t highlight Apple TV+, Apple’s streaming service is also one of the most affordable options. It has limited content, but it provides high-quality content. Last week, 9to5Mac reported that the company is promoting some of its shows in the Los Angeles The Grove store, as you can read more about here.

Apple launches updated professional training and certification for IT support and management

Today, Apple announced new online courses and certifications for Apple device support, deployment, and management to prepare workers for in-demand careers. According to a press release shared by the company this morning, demand for skilled support and technical staff within the enterprise is growing, with jobs in computer and information systems in particular projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2020 to 2030.

With that in mind, Apple is updating its professional training and certifications for IT support and management. This training was completely revamped and now can be done online. Apple offers two additional exams that will test users’ competence and allow them to earn their certification.

“More people than ever are using Mac, iPad, and iPhone to do their best work, and the demand for Apple-certified IT professionals has never been greater,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Enterprise and Education Marketing. Apple Professional Training is available to anyone interested in IT. It can help them pursue high-paying jobs that are attractive to employers, whether they’re changing their careers or upgrading their skills. We believe deeply in inclusion in technology, so the new courses are self-paced and freely available, and we are working to ensure ability to pay isn’t a barrier to earning Apple certification.”

Apple Deployment and Management and Apple Device Support are both sequential courses that help users build skills and knowledge. New certification exams can be taken at the end of each course to show competence and provide digital badges from Apple.

Each exam costs $149, and certification can be displayed on resumes, online profiles, and job boards, enabling users to stand out in job searches.

Apple also partnered up with Mac Admins Foundation in order to provide additional access to new Apple exams. With underwriting from Apple, the foundation will offer vouchers to applicants with financial needs. As a new 501(c)(3) organization, two key tenets of the Mac Admins Foundation are making a welcoming and accessible organization to expand the profession and maintaining affordable access to all community resources.

DeathVerse: Let It Die will launch a limited open beta later this month

DeathVerse: Let It Die will launch a limited open beta later this month

Publisher GungHo Online Entertainment and developer Supertrick Games announced today that they will host the first limited-time open beta for DeathVerse: Let It Die, the multiplayer survival action game follow-up to 2016’s Let It Die, on May 28.

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players will be able to pre-download the DeathVerse beta from the PlayStation Store starting Wednesday. The beta will be available to players in multiple regions and languages.

Set hundreds of years after the events of Let It Die, DeathVerse: Let It Die will have players compete as a contestant in a 16-player survival battle arena within the universe of a smash-hit reality TV contest known as Death Jamboree. The game will allow players to control a personal robotic partner named Wilson, which they can transform into any of the five weapon types, including buzzsaws and machetes.

DeathVerse: Let It Die introduces some intriguing twists on the battle royale genre, introducing reactive battlefields with regions that become hazardous to players’ health and debuff the effectiveness of their attacks; deadly NPC opponents such as Cryptids and Hunters (think Left 4 Dead‘s Special Infected) that roam the arena attacking players on sight; and materials that can be used to modify your abilities to boost your chances for survival.

Players who defeat other players, or Cryptids in a flashy manner will earn Glory Points which can be used to increase their attack power. Killing Brands can be used to collect Glory Points. These are given out when Hunters kill a rival. Watch out though — if you’re not careful, you might run risk of being killed yourself.

DeathVerse: Let It Die’s open beta is scheduled to begin on May 28 and run from 1-7 pm PDT, with a second open beta set to launch on June 5, and run from 1-6 am PDT.

Saints Row’s 2022 reboot won’t skimp on the mayhem, Volition vows

Saints Row’s 2022 reboot won’t skimp on the mayhem, Volition vows

If you’re headed into Saints Row when the rebooted, open-world criminal escapade launches in August, pack a proverbial lunch; it looks like a lot. Deep Silver Volition is aware of this.

“In terms of the amount of it, you said it, you can be a victim of so much,” creative director Brian Traficante acknowledged — where “so much” means just about every feature in Saints Row: character customizations, side hustles and rackets, car combat, melee finishers, and, of course, multi-part set-piece missions that drive the core narrative.

“So we put a lot of energy into making sure that you can feel successful, and you can be accomplished in the main objectives,” Traficante said. “You don’t have to do all the things. You can get easier options. In an example of a [business] venture, you can build it, but you can only do 25% of [the] venture and you’ll earn the achievement [to] move on.”

In short, Traficante is trying to make a thread. There’s, on the one side, the endless openness of content hardcore completionists expect from Saints Row over the past two decades. But, in structure, dabblers and samplers won’t feel paralyzed by FOMO. The designers instead are promoting Saints Row s many aspects as an expression to their playing style. They assume that not everyone will want to try everything.

“You’ll see a cool thing, and that’s the beauty of it — are you pulled to vehicles? Traficante asked. Are you drawn to weapons?” Traficante said. Do you feel drawn to characters? I mean, is that your style? Because I guarantee you, we’ve got something out there for you to go seek.”

Big picture, Saints Row will be the same up-from-nothing/comeback epic players have come to expect of the open-world crime genre, no matter how weird it got from 2011’s Saints Row the Third onward. The game still centers on wiping out rival factions to establish control of the city — in this case, Santo Ileso, introduced in the game’s first big reveal at Gamescom 2021.

Three months later, Volition and Deep Silver kicked Saints Row‘s launch date down the road to August (from February), saying that the game needed more development polish while vowing not to back away from the younger, more diverse, and more inclusive Gen Z sensibilities presented in its cast and story. Last week’s preview event seemed to confirm this; the missions, dialogue, and (it must be said) weapons stayed true to what was shown nine months ago, and didn’t veer back to the days when Saints Row was marketed by porn stars and dildos.

That’s not to say it’s any less zany. The tutorial heist mission will involve a payday loan joint. Players and their roommates need to pay the rent. Of course, that leads to more trouble with a rival gang, in a lengthy story mission that introduces your lieutenants’ stories and the gameplay loops you’ll be returning to throughout Saints Row.

“There’s a lot of heavy lifting” done in the game’s early portions, Traficante said. “These are brand-new characters. […] We want to give you all the time, and all the knows, and all the feels, but there are other costs to that, right? We’ve got to keep things moving along to keep the player engaged.”

The “boss” player character looks at her smartphone with a sunset in the background

Image: Volition/Deep Silver

Volition showed off a mission in which the gang, still in its early days but starting to pack a punch, acquires an attack helicopter (they’re used as thrill rides in the Vegas-like Santo Ileso, letting tourists shoot up the desert) to invade a rival faction’s weapons factory. Before going in, The Boss (the player character, same as they’ve always been known) re-spec’d their skills loadout, which runs four perks deep. This passive ability can be earned through completing tasks in the wider open world. If properly arranged, it may give players an advantage. In the mission we saw, a fire resistance perk helped the player chew through the weapons foundry against the Panteras gang, which is known for deploying firebombs.

Similarly, all weapons in Saints Row will have signature abilities that are unlocked by completing challenges. We saw an extra-damaging submachine gun in the weapons factory mission. That comes in handy when a rompin’, stompin’ monster truck rolls up on the set. Presumably, there are other perks and weapon signatures to efficiently pacify these boss and sub-boss enemies, depending on player style.

A character swings past a monster truck in a screenshot from Saints Row

Image: Volition/Deep Silver

” “At the end, it’s Saints Row, so it should be easily recognized and feel like Saints Row,” Traficante stated. Jim Boone, the chief creative officer of Volition, stated that the delay was not due to the studio taking extra time to revise Saints Row ‘s story or characters. Bottom line, Volition is trying to make Saints Row feel familiar through gameplay, assuming that’s what its biggest fans value most.

Side hustles and ventures, a staple of the franchise, are another welcome mat Volition is laying to make Saints fans feel at home. Santo Ileso’s map has 14 vacant lots in need of redevelopment, one of them being an old folks’ home that unlocks the fan-favorite insurance fraud racket. A chop shop garage delivers additional vehicle customizations, for players who find drive-bys more efficient than shootouts on foot. The business ventures will have four tiers, with progressive benefits and mission lists to unlock them. These missions can also result in turf takeovers which will help the game reach its final state.

” The side hustle culture was something I think I drew from,” stated Volition’s Jennifer Campbell. She is one of Saints Row s authors. “Because of the dream of, like, ‘One day, maybe I’ll be able to retire.’ It seems to be really big in the early to mid-20s. Just seeing all these entrepreneurs making opportunities for themselves, when they have so many roadblocks in their way. That’s a really awesome story to inspect: When you’re up against the world, how do you find ways to prosper?”
