Vivo X80 Pro design highlights the cameras in an awkward way

Vivo X80 Pro design highlights the cameras in an awkward way

There are many options to focus the camera on your smartphone, but some designs really stand out.

While Samsung appears to be focusing on making foldable smartphones more accessible and saleable in mainstream markets for its products, other manufacturers continue to take advantage of the popularity of mobile photography cards that have not lost their luster over the years. Hardware for these cameras continues to impress with new technologies and features that try to outdo or at least match those on professional cameras. In order to emphasize the role these cameras play, some phone makers have embraced designs that make the lenses the visual focus of a phone’s back. In some cases, the strategy works, but there are also instances like the Vivo X80 Pro that does have you staring at that camera bump, but probably not in a good way.

Designer: Vivo

In general, there are two ways to call attention to something. Either you make the object so stunning that everyone stops and marvels, or make it so confusing that they are left wondering. To be fair, the Vivo X80 Pro’s camera design isn’t on either extreme, but its “circle in a box” takes its oddest turn here. The phone doesn’t just talk.

Vivo likens this motif as resembling traditional cameras, where the lens is enclosed in a circle that’s a bit off-center of a larger rectangular box. Of course, a camera’s lens and sensor are more in the middle, and the entire camera design is well-balanced despite how some parts look larger and longer than others. The camera must be balanced ergonomically, otherwise it can be hard to use and hold, even with one hand.

In contrast, the Vivo X80 Pro’s camera design seems to revolve around the idea of asymmetry and imbalance. Although it has used this motif in other models, like the Vivo X Note, the Vivo X Fold, and the non-Pro Vivo X80, it looks more awkward and almost cluttered here with more elements to accommodate. In order to keep the design consistent between those four 2022 models, Vivo opted to keep the “extra” 8MP periscope telephoto camera out of that circle. This means that the rectangular island is much wider than the circle, allowing for the square lens to be placed on its own row. It’s not as tight as the other models that fit tightly on the bottom and top edges of the enclosure.

Even the position of that periscope camera itself is awkward and could trigger some people with OCD tendencies. It sits on its own, not aligned with any other visual object horizontally or vertically. It’s almost as if the designers couldn’t really decide where to place the camera best and just used an empty space there. For the record, the right side of the camera array is nearly empty save for the LED flash and branding. While there are arguments for making good use of white space in certain cases, wasted space is also an issue.

To its credit, the Vivo X80 Pro seems to at least deliver all the photography prowess it promises, and owners will be more focused on taking photos and recording videos rather than staring at the cameras on the phone’s back. That said, Vivo could have probably done better, especially to maximize the space it can use, even if it meant deviating a bit from the Vivo X80 and their cousins. Then again, Vivo could have also done worse, like the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate and the upcoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra, both of which put a large wart with many holes in the middle of the phone’s back face.

Fortnite coming back to iOS, thanks to Nvidia’s GeForce Now

Fortnite coming back to iOS, thanks to Nvidia’s GeForce Now

After more than a decade of being absent from Apple’s App store, Fortnite is coming back to iOS. Epic Games’ epic battle royale smash hit won’t return to Apple’s App Store. Instead, the game will be available via Apple’s Safari browser and Nvidia’s GeForceNow gaming streaming service. An Android version will also be playable through GeForce Now.

Nvidia and Epic announced Thursday that the companies have been working to develop a touch-friendly version of Fortnite for mobile devices that’s playable through the cloud. A closed, limited-time beta for Fortnite on mobile through GeForce Now will roll out next week, Nvidia said, and subscribers to the cloud-gaming service can register to take part.

Fortnite was removed from the App Store in August 2020, when developer Epic Games added a new option to the in-game store that allowed players to purchase V-Bucks, the paid in-game currency, directly from Epic. This new option bypassed the App Store’s 30% cut of purchases made on the platform, a violation of Apple’s terms.

Apple quickly removed Fortnite from the App Store — a move that Epic anticipated — leading Epic to release a video that parodied Apple’s most famous commercial, and to file a lawsuit against Apple. Google likewise pulled Fortnite from its app store, leading Epic to instruct players how to install the game outside of the Google Play app store.

After a very public trial, and a lengthy deliberation, the judge in the case ruled that Apple cannot prohibit developers “from including in their apps and their metadata buttons, external links or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms.” But Fortnite remains barred from Apple’s App Store, and may be unavailable natively on iOS for up to five years, according to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney.

Microsoft opted for a similar implementation for Xbox Cloud Gaming when it brought its cloud-based gaming service to iOS devices last year. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers have the ability to stream Xbox games from their Apple devices using a browser. This is a clever way for Apple to bypass its restrictive guidelines regarding game streaming apps being added to its App store.

Update (May 17): GeForce Now’s Fortnite beta test has ended, and the game is now available for all GeForce Now subscribers to play on the Safari browser for iOS or on the GeForce Now Android app.

Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro in for review

Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro in for review

The latest Huawei flagship smartwatches are now available. They offer top-notch quality and enough activity and health tracking features to satisfy even the most demanding customers. We’ve got both 46mm titanium GT 3 Pro and the smaller 43mm ceramic unit on hand so let’s take a quick look at their key features.

Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro in for review

As is usual with Huawei’s GT Series watches, the build quality of these watches is exceptional. You can feel it from the moment you open them. The titanium body and strap and the sapphire glass screen on the 46mm GT 3 Pro feel solid, premium and reassuring. This is a big watch weighing 55 grams and may look a bit odd on people with smaller wrists. The 1. 43-inch round AMOLED screen is large enough for most use cases though we can’t help but mention the thick surrounding bezel.

The nanocrystalline ceramic body and strap on the 43mm model are quite impressive and feel comfortable and solid on the wrist. The 1. 32-inch AMOLED on here is also covered with sapphire glass and you get a golden accent surrounding the watch face and crown element.

People with small wrists will love the compact design, though not all styles will be able to use the gold and white colors. Both GT 3 Pro watches feature butterfly lock mechanisms and come with spare links in the box.

The 46mm GT 3 Pro is a big watch.

Navigation of watches can be done mainly via touchscreen, but you also have the option to use the side and crown buttons. HarmonyOS 2.0 covers the software side and runs smoothly while supporting third-party apps. Health tracking promises the usual mix of heart rate and blood oxygen measurements alongside sleep and stress measurements. The more fancy ones include ECG (not available in our market) and arterial stiffness detection as well as a body temperature measurement.

Both Watch GT 3 Pro devices come with onboard microphones and speakers for taking calls. NFC, dual-band GPS and diveproof ratings are some other notable features. Watch GT 3 Pro 46mm is rated at two weeks of battery life with normal use while the smaller 43mm gets a seven-day estimate. These claims will be tested alongside other important features during our complete review.

Audi Apple Music integration gives direct access from infotainment system for most 2022 models

Audi Apple Music integration gives direct access from infotainment system for most 2022 models

A new Audi Apple Music integration means that owners of almost all 2022 models will be able to play the streaming music service directly from the built-in infotainment system. No connection to your iPhone is needed.

The company says that existing owners of 2022 models will also get the feature, via an over-the-air update …

The company made the announcement today.

Audi is integrating Apple Music, a premium music streaming subscription service, directly into select models. Adding Apple Music into the infotainment system gives users the ability to access their subscription directly and intuitively from the Multi-Media Interface (MMI) screen using in-car internet data. This seamless integration allows Apple Music subscribers to find their favorite music and discover even more new music.

The new Apple Music integration allows customers to access their personal Apple Music account directly from the Audi infotainment system, with no bluetooth or USB required. After linking an active subscription to the vehicle, Apple Music subscribers can access Apple Music’s full catalog of 90 million songs, and tens of thousands of playlists, including hundreds of new mood and activity playlists, personalized mixes, and genre stations – all ad-free […]

The Apple Music integration will be included in nearly all Audi vehicles in Europe, North America and Japan starting with the 2022 model year. The integration will be conveniently rolled out to vehicles already on the road via an automatic over-the-air update.

The company naturally took the opportunity to talk-up its in-car sound systems at the same time.

Audi creates a tailor-made acoustic experience for each model, and digital signal processing delivers a well-balanced sound. For example, the signals from the speakers can be controlled with an individual time offset and thus reach the listener simultaneously. Sound design goes even further to create the ultimate acoustic experience. This is where the Audi sound developers adjust the frequency response to create the typical, but still subjective, Audi sound.

Audi has been working with Bang & Olufsen in this context for many years, which has resulted in the development of some exceptional sound systems, such as the B&O Premium Sound System with 3D sound in the Audi e-tron GT. Here, 16 speakers including 3D sound speakers, a center speaker, and a subwoofer deliver impressive audio.

Fellow German carmaker Porsche has offered a similar integration in some models since 2019.

Second Apple union-busting charge filed, this time at World Trade Center store

Second Apple union-busting charge filed, this time at World Trade Center store

A second Apple union-busting charge has been filed against the company, alleging that the company has violated multiple federal laws at the World Trade Center store.

A previous charge of violating the National Labor Relations Act related to Apple’s response to unionization efforts at an Apple Store in Atlanta …

Background

We first learned of retail staff plans to unionize back in February, when groups at two stores were reportedly preparing paperwork to file with the National Labor Relations Board, with about six more locations at earlier stages of planning. The main concern is over wages having failed to keep up with inflation, though workers are also concerned about a range of other working condition issues.

We saw a formal start to the process at Apple’s flagship Grand Central Terminal store in New York, with a number of goals for a better deal for staff. This was followed by similar moves in Atlanta and Maryland.

Apple responded by distributing anti-union talking points to managers, in which it was suggested – among other things – that unionizing could result in fewer opportunities for promotion.

Apple union-busting charges filed

Apple is accused of “unfair labor practices” – the legal term for violations of the National Labor Relations Act, which prohibits companies from interfering with the formation or organization of a union.

Engadget reports that the Communications Workers of America (CWA) has filed one charge on behalf of Apple Store workers in Atlanta, and a second one regarding the World Trade Center store.

The labor union is accusing the tech giant of violating multiple federal labor laws at its flagship World Trade Center store. The complaint alleges that Apple interrogated workers at the WTC store regarding their “protected concerted activities.” Apple also allegedly monitored those activities, or at least made employees believe that they were being monitored […]

The group said Apple “unlawfully implemented” a rule at the store that prohibits employees from posting union flyers in work areas during their breaks. Further, it’s accusing the tech giant of conducting “captive-audience” speeches designed to discourage them from unionizing […]

The Communications Workers of America also filed an Unfair Labor Practice complaint against Apple on behalf of workers at the Cumberland Mall store, [accusing] the company of holding mandatory captive audience meetings regarding the upcoming union election for the Atlanta location.

“Captive-audience meetings” refers to meetings that staff is required to attend as part of their duties, such as morning briefing meetings. It’s illegal for a company to use mandatory-attendance meetings to discourage unionization.

The CWA said that Apple was also not acting in accordance with its claimed values.

Apple retail workers across the country are demanding a voice on the job and a seat at the table. Unfortunately, and in contradiction to its stated values, Apple has responded like a typical American corporation with heavy-handed tactics designed to intimidate and coerce workers. The best thing Apple can do is allow workers to choose for themselves whether or not they want a union. When we learn of situations where Apple is violating labor law, we intend to hold the company accountable and help the workers defend their rights under the law.

9to5Mac’s Take

We’ve previously suggested that Apple adopt a cooperative approach to unionization moves, rather than a confrontational one. That would continue to be the company’s best course of action, from both a staff morale and PR perspective.

Apple union-busting activity wouldn’t be a good look at the best of times, but the fact that Apple is now being accused of going far enough to violate the law only adds to the stakes.

The Xiaomi 12 Ultra will retain the camera specs of its predecessor

The Xiaomi 12 Ultra will retain the camera specs of its predecessor

Yet another rumor backs the Xiaomi 12 Ultra to keep the same camera specs as the Mi 11 Ultra. Per Digital Chat Station on Weibo and a leaked case with camera specs markings, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will have a 120x, 12-120mm, f/1.95-4.1 camera, which coincides directly with the current Ultra.

Let’s clear the specs up – the 12-120mm refers to the optical distance covered from the 48MP 12mm equivalent ultrawide to the 48MP 120mm telephoto camera. The other numbers refer to the apertures of the camera lenses – starting with the f/1.95 of the main camera and ending at the slowest f/4.1 of the periscope telephoto.

The Xiaomi 12 Ultra will retain the camera specs of its predecessor

Most rumors agree that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will retain the camera specs, although some people expected brighter lenses, at least. However, the move to a faster Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip can bring much-needed benefits in speed, and possibly some image processing enhancements as well.

The Xiaomi 12 Ultra could arrive this month, clad in premium materials such as leather, glass, or ceramic, like its predecessor.

Motorola Moto G42 renders and certifications surface

A new Motorola phone is on the horizon – model number XT2233-2, also known under the ‘Hawaii+’ code name. This will arrive on the market as the Motorola Moto G42, a sequel to the G41 from last year and a cheaper alternative to the G52.

Actually, the full code name of this device is ‘HawaiiPlusOLED22’. Having an OLED display is not surprising, though, given that both the Moto G41 and G52 have one as well. Unfortunately, that’s almost everything we know about the phone specs-wise.

The Moto G42 has already secured quite a few certifications that offer a glimpse of what’s to come. Per the FCC, this will be a 4G-only phone, which limits the possible chipsets inside to nothing too advanced (e.g. the G52 runs on a Snapdragon 680, the old G41 had a Helio G85). If you want 5G, you might have to wait for the Moto G62, which is also incoming.

This particular model has two SIM slots along with NFC support and will launch with Android 12. Aside from the FCC, it was also certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance and the EEC.

Previous leaks of Motorola’s 2022 line-up mentioned four names, which will most likely be part of the Edge series – Frontier (Edge 30 Ultra), Dubai (Edge 30), Dubai+ and Miami (Edge 30 Lite) – so there’s more to come from the company soon. It is not clear when.

The listing reveals the chipset bears the “Taro” codename and features a maximum clock speed of 3. 19Ghz which should be for the Cortex-X2 CPU performance core. We can also see an additional trio of cores clocked at 2. 75Ghz – presumably of the Cortex-A710 variety and four power-efficient Cortex-A510 units running at 1.8GHz. The Z Flip4 in the listing is also equipped with 8GB RAM and boots Android 12. It managed 1,277 single-core points and 3,642 points on the multi-core test.
