The South Korean government wants 6G prototypes to be ready in 2026

5G became a battleground not just for smartphone makers, but for governments as well. But now that the tech is established, focus is shifting on what comes next – 6G. What is 6G?

Some performance requirements include a peak data rate of 1 Tbps (i.e. 1,000 times the bandwidth of a typical Ethernet port) and latency of under 100 us (one 10,000th of a second). Compared to 5G, 6G aims to deliver 50 times higher peak data rates and to reduce latency 10 times.

Below is a chart from Samsung that compares 5G (light blue) and the targets for 6G (blue):

The South Korean government wants 6G prototypes to be ready in 2026

As we have mentioned, not only the company but also the government of South Korea has an important interest in becoming a significant player in the new era in mobile networks. According to the Presidential Transition Committee :

“When it comes to future economic growth drivers, the current government is focusing on non-memory chip, future car and biotech and healthcare. The new government is planning to add 6G communications, secondary battery, display, defense and aerospace, advanced nuclear power plant and digital content.”

The goal is to have 6G prototypes ready in 2026, so that the technology can be ready for commercialization in the late 2020s or early 2030s. The government wants it done as soon as possible.

There’s a lot of work left to do, however, things seem to be progressing fast. Last year Samsung demonstrated a transmission at 15m. LG improved that and managed to beam a signal 100m between buildings. Both were using signals above 100 GHz, significantly higher than the current mmWave implementations.

Genshin Impact 2.7 update delayed by Hoyoverse

Genshin Impact 2.7 update delayed by Hoyoverse

The new 2.7 update to Genshin Impact, the popular open-world gacha game, has been delayed. The next patch was originally scheduled for May 10. Developer Hoyoverse announced the delay Thursday night on Twitter.

The developers did not cite any specific reasons behind the delay, but a press representative from Hoyoverse told Polygon via email that it was “due to project progress.” It’s likely that the setbacks are being caused by lockdowns in Shanghai from Covid-19, where the Hoyoverse offices are located. The city has been in a strict lockdown since early April.

Dear Travelers,

Due to project progress, the Version 2.7 update will be postponed.
For detailed information on the date of the new update, content adjustment plan, and compensation, please stay tuned for upcoming announcements.#GenshinImpact pic.twitter.com/FiiGQyJO1G

— Genshin Impact (@GenshinImpact) April 29, 2022

Content from Genshin Impact typically unrolls on a very timely schedule, generally speaking, the game will get a new update every week and contain two three-week banners in every patch. The current 2.6 update, “Zephyr of the Violet Garden,” is amidst its second banner and the game was due for an update in on May 10. There have been no official announcements for the characters on the next banner or content in the 2.7 update, but it was likely that Yelan, a new five-star hydro bow user would come since Hoyoverse revealed her official character art at the end of March.

Although the game is well known for updating on a regular schedule, fans have suspected a possible delay for weeks because of the lockdowns in Shanghai. Additionally, game features like decorating and building in the Serenita Pot have been under maintenance for several weeks. As for the details of upcoming banners, and how long the delay will last, Hoyoverse said more information is to come.

“For detailed information on the date of the new update, content adjustment plan, and compensation, please stay tuned for upcoming announcements,” a representative said. “We will provide the corresponding information to Travelers as soon as possible. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.”

Final Fantasy 16 producer offers update on game development, design goals

Final Fantasy 16 producer offers update on game development, design goals

Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida says the next mainline game in the Final Fantasy series is in the “final stages” of development, according to translated comments Yoshida made to Uniqlo’s UT magazine. (Yes, Uniqlo the clothing retail giant, which is about to launch a new series of Final Fantasy T-shirts for the franchise’s 35th anniversary. )

Yoshida, aka “Yoshi-P,” also offered some insight into the development philosophy of Final Fantasy 16 — insight that seems tailored to appeal to the kind of player who might fondly remember past Final Fantasy games, but really only buys the retro T-shirts now.

“Unlike an online game that involves many players at the same time, [Final Fantasy 16] offers a different experience where it focuses on the individual player and immerses you in the story,” Yoshida said, according to a translation from Final Fantasy fan and Twitch streamer Audrey. “I think it’s a very fleshed-out story. For those who have grown up and realized that reality isn’t kind to you and have drifted away from Final Fantasy, we hope that FF16 will be a game that can bring back anew the passion that you once had with the series.”

Publisher Square Enix hasn’t communicated any kind of release date for Final Fantasy 16, but Yoshida himself has promised to show new information about the game sometime this spring. Yoshida has also said that FF16‘s development was slowed by the pandemic, impacting the game’s development by as much as six months.

Final Fantasy 16 was announced in September 2020 as a PlayStation 5 game. An official version for PC has been also announced.

Cellebrite iPhone cracking: Here’s which models the kit can unlock and access, and how to protect your data

Cellebrite iPhone cracking: Here’s which models the kit can unlock and access, and how to protect your data

Cellebrite iPhone cracking tool allows clients of the company to view virtually every private data on their phones – sometimes even locked.

But the precise capabilities of an iPhone depend on the model and version of iOS that it runs. To see the capabilities of the latest version, we were able to access the documentation.

Background

Cellebrite makes a range of hardware and software kits designed to unlock both iPhones and Android smartphones, and extract most of the data on them.

Some versions are sold to commercial companies, while Cellebrite Premium is – in theory – sold only to law enforcement agencies. However, the exact position is unclear. For example, the company recently revealed that it has over 2,800 US government customers, many of which would not fall within what one would normally think of as ‘law enforcement.’

Investigators with the US Fish and Wildlife Service frequently work to thwart a variety of environmental offenses, from illegal deforestation to hunting without a license. These are serious crimes but they don’t usually involve hacking phones. But Fish and Wildlife agents are among the increasingly broad set of government employees who can now break into encrypted phones and siphon off mounds of data with technology purchased from the surveillance company Cellebrite […]

The list includes many that would seem far removed from intelligence collection or law enforcement, like the departments of Agriculture, Education, Veterans Affairs, and Housing and Urban Development; the Social Security Administration; the U.S. Agency for International Development; and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Other Cellebrite clients are bluechip firms that want to carry out internal investigations and cybersecurity businesses.

Cellebrite Premium kit

The flagship phone cracking kit offered by the company is known as Cellebrite Premium. This is a hardware and software package comprising:

  • Cellebrite Premium laptop, with pre-installed software
  • Android Adapter
  • iOS Adapter
  • iOS Adapter (AFU version, for use after the phone has been powered off)
  • A complete set of cables and carrying bag
  • A hardware license dongle, without which the software won’t run

The software allows users to extract either specific target data (for example, Messages or photos) or the complete filesystem, which contains almost all user data – including Keychain passwords, which then gives the user the ability to access most services you use. Here’s what the company says about it:

By performing full-file system and physical extractions, you can get much more data than what is possible through a logical extraction, and access highly protected areas such as the iOS Keychain or the Secure Folder.

Accessing 3rd party application data, stored passwords and tokens, chat conversations, location data, email attachments, system logs, as well as deleted content, increases your chances of finding the incriminating evidence.

Cellebrite iPhone cracking capabilities

Back in February, the company kept its most advanced capabilities in-house, but the webpage relating to this has since disappeared, and it seems from the documentation we’ve reviewed that Cellebrite Premium can now do everything that CAS used to do.

We should note that the documentation we have obtained pre-dates the launch of the iPhone 13, and at that time the company apparently had no ability to access the iPhone 12 either.

Full access even when locked, with any supported iOS version

Cellebrite Premium can unlock and gain access to the full filesystem of the following models of phone even when protected by a passcode, with the unlocking time dependent on the complexity of the passcode. The company will unlock your phone and allow you to access all supported iOS versions.

  • iPhone 4S*
  • iPhone 5*
  • iPhone 5S*
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6S
  • iPhone SE
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone X

*Interestingly, in-house unlocking is required for these three models if they are running iOS 5 or iOS 6, while Cellebrite Premium allows clients to unlock devices directly if running iOS 7 or later.

The reason these models can be cracked regardless of iOS version is because of unpatchable vulnerabilities in these models. One of these was revealed with the checkm8 exploit, and another flaw discovered in the Secure Enclave later the same year. This too cannot be patched.

Full access even when locked, with older iOS versions

There are three models of iPhone the kit can unlock if they are running any version of iOS up to iOS 13.7.

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone 11

Full access only with passcode

The same three models running iOS 14 or iOS 15 cannot be unlocked by the company, either with Cellebrite Premium or the company’s in-house resources. If clients possess the passcode for the phone, full filesystem access can be obtained.

  • iPhone XR (iOS 14 or 15)
  • iPhone XS (iOS 14 or 15)
  • iPhone 11 (iOS 14 or 15)

Law enforcement may or may not have the power needed to force a suspect to reveal their passcode – this depends on the country and the jurisdiction.

Brute-force unlocking is very time-consuming

Unlocking devices requires the kit to brute-force passcodes. This relies on being able to disable the lockouts Apple applies to repeated passcode attempts, but even so is a slow process due to delays imposed prior to complete lockout.

The company warns that the process can be very time-consuming, with one example in the user guide referencing a rate of a little over 100 attempts per day.

However, the kit does allow users to enter any personal data they have for the phone’s owner, such as date of birth, and other important dates, such as a significant other’s birthday. They will then be used for initial attempts before resorting brute force. This information serves to underline the importance of protecting even relatively trivial personal data.

Autonomous mode

Cellebrite brute-force unlocking used to require the phone to be left connected to the kit until it succeeded. Cellebrite Premium, however, provides an autonomous mode, where the phone can be disconnected once the attack is underway. This is because the kit manages to install the software running the attack directly on the iPhone itself, even though the phone is locked.

Cellebrite uses Cellebrite to run an automatic dictionary attack on target devices. Cellebrite Premium can disconnect the target device from Cellebrite Premium so that the automated bruteforce process runs on multiple devices at once.

It is worth noting that Cellebrite attacks need physical access to your phone. This is in contrast with NSO Pegasus spyware which can be remotely deployed, and includes zero-click options.

The card that breaks MTG New Capenna wide open has only 9 words on it

The card that breaks MTG New Capenna wide open has only 9 words on it

Turns to be able to only use one line of text for a Magic: The Gathering card. This will allow you some serious shenanigans. Among the cards released in Magic‘s newest set, Streets of New Capenna, a certain six-mana green artifact has deck-builders buzzing with its potential to take over games and promote table-flipping reactions. Allow me to introduce you to Bootlegger’s Stash.

Bootlegger’s Stash allows you to create a treasure token for each land you control when you tap that land.

Image: Wizards of the Coast

Image: Wizards of the Coast

Before exploring some of the specific applications that Bootlegger’s Stash has, let’s clarify why this card’s ability is noteworthy in the first place. In short, by granting all your lands the ability to produce treasures, this card generates value in the form of a concept Magic players sometimes refer to as “material.”

Consider your everyday Magic cards: lands and spells. When you have creatures or lands, one card in your hand can put one permanent or object on the battlefield. But common exceptions to this principle are cards that make tokens. Classic examples such as Thraben Inspector (which makes a clue) or Hordeling Outburst (which makes three goblins) will represent one card in hand but produce multiple permanents on the battlefield, here in the form of tokens. When Magic players refer to “material,” it’s usually this ability to create multiple permanents off one card.

A grim-faced card inspects the lichen. When they enter the battlefield, players can investigate.

Image: Wizards of the Coast

Hordeling outburst creates three 1/1 red Goblin creature tokens using red mana to cast it as a sorcery.

Image: Wizards of the Coast

Generally, token makers are no big deal. Practically every set has them, and the majority see relatively little play because the in-game value these cards produce isn’t powerful enough for competitive constructed formats such as Standard or Modern. But every once in a while, a unique new token maker breaks through because it’s easy to cast, annoying to deal with, and the tokens themselves are good enough to want multiples.

Older players might recall when Bitterblossom or Gideon, Ally of Zendikar were format-defining cards for their unique abilities to produce a steady stream of pesky creature tokens on otherwise hard-to-answer permanents. Even today in the Modern format, Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer is one of the most-played creatures thanks in part to its ability to generate ongoing treasure tokens on a cheap, aggressive body.

Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, is a planeswalker that brings human soldiers onto the battlefield and buffs them.

Image: Wizards of the Coast

Image: Wizards of the Coast

Image: Wizards of the Coast

Like previous token maker all-stars, Bootlegger’s Stash checks a critical box: It keeps producing material after it is played — treasure tokens, no less. These let you extend the range of your mana base beyond your land count and color restrictions. It’s fun to grab a few treasure tokens once in a while, but if you do it more than that three times in one game, your resource bank will be huge and could trigger other great synergies. By transforming your lands into token makers, the decks that maximize all these treasures will find themselves snowballing quickly with a variety of outlets that can exploit a never-ending supply of widgets.

Time Sieve

One of the scariest applications for Stash is the threat of enabling an infinite-turns combo when it’s on the board at the same time as a two-mana artifact called Time Sieve. The best part of all? It’s as simple as combining both of your cards.

Image: Wizards of the Coast

Since Time Sieve only requires five artifacts to activate, and Stash can enable at least six treasure tokens every turn, once the two artifacts are online simultaneously, your opponent better have some artifact removal handy or they’ll never take a turn again.

Academy Manufactor and Chatterfang

Among the limits to Stash’s potential is the fact that it only makes one type of token. Although having tons of mana through treasures can be very powerful, eventually you will need to have something to spend that mana. Stash is able to produce more material every time an activation occurs with the aid of token generators. The simplest one-two punch is to have Academy Manufactor on the board, which diversifies your material production into mana, card draw, and life gain effects. With Manufactor out, each treasure you make comes with a clue token and a food token, providing a built-in application for all the mana you produce. Crack the clues to draw through your deck and find a way to win, or pad your life total with some tasty food if opponents have you under pressure.

You can take this combo one step further by creating creatures in the process with Chatterfang, Squirrel General, the most adorable apex predator currently hiding out in the vast catalog of legal-to-play cards. Chatterfang can be used even without the Academy Manufactor, but it becomes stronger when you have more tokens. By themselves, Chatterfang and Stash produce an additional 1/1 squirrel with every treasure you make. At a minimum there are six squirrels for every treasure you make.

Things get really out of hand if you have Manufactor on the board, too, because now, every land you tap is making two extra artifact tokens along with three squirrel tokens. Assuming we’re still only working with the six lands you used to cast Stash, that means you can make up to 36 tokens every turn between squirrels and other widgets. So if you haven’t drawn a Time Sieve to take infinite turns, your practically infinite material should close out the game.

Streets of New Capenna is out now for Magic Online and Magic: The Gathering Arena, and is available for tabletop play starting April 29.

AAPL Q3 2022 will be tough, says company, for five reasons

AAPL Q3 2022 will be tough, says company, for five reasons

Analysts and investors of course wanted to hear yesterday’s Q2 earnings, but they were even more eager to get any clues to how AAPL Q3 2022 numbers might look.

The company reported record revenue for fiscal Q2 despite component shortages, but the company warned that things could get tougher in the current quarter …

Apple yesterday reported Q2 revenue of $97.3B. That’s not only a new Q2 record, but higher than even the most bullish of analysts had expected. The consensus forecast among the institutional analysts was $95. 51B – and even JP Morgan, which came closest, was under at $96.43B.

However, Apple did also reveal that it expected significant supply-chain headwinds in the current quarter. Chief financial officer Luca Maestri warned that component shortages would be “substantially larger” this quarter.

Supply constraints caused by COVID-related disruptions and industrywide silicon shortages are impacting our ability to meet customer demand for our products. We expect these constraints to be in the range of $4 billion to $8 billion, which is substantially larger than what we experienced during the March quarter.

But the CFO also warned that three other factors would hurt the company’s Q3 revenue:

The COVID disruptions have also had an impact on China’s customer demand. With respect to foreign exchange, we expect it to be a nearly 300 basis point headwind to our year-over-year growth rate. We also stopped all Russian sales during March quarter. This will impact our year-over-year growth rate by approximately 150 basis points. Specifically related to services, we expect to continue to grow double digits but decelerate from our March quarter performance due to some of the factors I just described.

Finally, Tim Cook, the CEO, stated that sales were being closely monitored to determine if inflation had an impact on sales. Although Apple does not expect the factor to have as much impact as those previously mentioned, they do believe it will.

So all-in, that’s five factors likely to reduce Q3 revenue:

  • Component shortages
  • COVID-19 disruption in China
  • Exchange rate weaknesses
  • Loss of Russian sales
  • Inflation reducing consumer spending power

While the supply constraints are temporary, Cook did admit that some sales might be lost permanently, because customers who needed something quickly would buy competitor products.

Strong iPhone growth leaves Apple the only smartphone winner so far this year

Strong iPhone growth leaves Apple the only smartphone winner so far this year

Strong iPhone growth saw Apple as the only smartphone brand to increase shipments during the first quarter of the year, according to a new market intelligence report. All other major brands saw their shipments shrink – by anywhere from 4% to 30%.

The independent estimate follows Apple’s earnings report yesterday, when the company revealed that iPhone revenue was up 5. 5% year-on-year …

Canalys measures iPhone shipments rather than revenue, and estimates that these climbed by 8% year-on-year, for a total of 56. 5M units.

Global smartphone shipments reached 311. 2 million units in Q1 2022, down 11% year on year. Samsung retook the lead after refreshing its portfolio for 2022, shipping 73. 7 million units, down 4% on a year ago. Apple combined high demand for the iPhone 13 series with a new iPhone SE, leading to solid growth of 8% and 56. 5 million units shipped. The top five were completed by OPPO, Xiaomi and vivo.

It’s impossible to compare Apple numbers with Canalys because sales and shipments differ. This can be either way. It’s possible for Apple to ship more iPhones in any given quarter than are actually sold (the balance being held as inventory), and it’s also possible for resellers to buy iPhones on 30-day terms, and sell them in one quarter before Apple gets the revenue in the following one.

But as shipments and sales do balance out in the end, this would give a back-of-an-envelope average selling price (ASP) of $895 – which would suggest the higher-end iPhones are selling well.

Canalys reports that Samsung of course remained the overall market leader, thanks to selling smartphone models at every price point, but its shipments were still 4% down year-on-year. Other major brands saw shipments down by a massive 20-30%, while smaller brands in the Other category were down 7%.

Canalys also warned of continued disruption due to component shortages.

A strict pandemic policy has led to lockdowns across major Chinese cities, putting a damper on the market’s short-term prospects. Moreover, disruptions in component production and logistics will affect most vendors’ Q2 shipments, both in mainland China and worldwide.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook yesterday warned that Apple is likely to see a supply shortfall costing the company anywhere from $4B to $8B this quarter. This was in response to a market intelligence report that indicated continued shortages of four components.

Cook added said that the company had seen a record number of iPhone owners upgrading to a new model last quarter, and that switchers – former Android owners switching to iPhones – also increased by an undisclosed double-digit percentage.

Canalys: Samsung shipped 73. 7 million smartphones globally in Q1 2022

Canalys released its full Q1 2022 global smartphone shipments report and the numbers show Samsung once again stood atop the charts. The South Korean conglomerate managed 73. 7 million shipments during the January – March period and secured 24% of the global smartphone market share. A total of 311. 2 million smartphones were shipped for the period which is 11% less than the same time last year.

Canalys: Samsung shipped 73.7 million smartphones globally in Q1 2022

Apple came in second place with 56. 5 million shipments with an 18% market share while also boasting the only annual growth out of the top-five companies at 8%. Xiaomi (39. 2 million), Oppo (29 million) and vivo (25. 1 million) were the other top-five companies in terms of shipments.

The Chinese market suffered significant drops during the period with Xiaomi, Oppo and vivo all losing upwards of 20% of their shipment figures compared to the same time last year. Low demand was caused by component shortages, COVID lockdowns ongoing and increasing inflation. Honor was the only brand that seemed to fare well during the period and claimed first place in terms of shipments with 15 million units sold.

The situation in Africa and the Middle East was not much better with Xiaomi shipments in both regions declining by 30%. North America was the only region to experience growth during the past quarter with Apple’s iPhone 13 series and Samsung’s Galaxy S22 trio leading the way. Looking ahead, analysts predict improvements in supply chains and a rebound in smartphone demand heading into the second half of the year.
