New Dragonlance board game was designed by Rob Daviau and Stephen Baker

New Dragonlance board game was designed by Rob Daviau and Stephen Baker

The new Dungeons and Dragons “battle” game was announced at D&D Direct on Thursday. It is a fully-fledged, board-based game that Wizards of the Coast says will also include miniatures. Titled Dragonlance: Warriors of Krynn, the board game will function as a standalone experience. But it is also fully integrated into the companion tabletop RPG campaign, titled Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen. Who were the designers of this project? Rob Daviau and Stephen Baker are the only two designers. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect pair for this project.

Wizards also announced a new Spelljammer setting on Thursday, however these Dragonlance products will be very different in tone and feel.

“We focus on the idea that Dragonlance can be described as a war story,” stated Ray Winninger of Wizards’ D&D department. The backdrop for Classic Dragonlance’s history is this huge conflict. These massive military battles form an integral part of Dragonlance. One of the original 12 Dragonlance modules [published by TSR] was a wargame [called Dragons of Glory]. They asked you to stop your role-playing game experience and start playing a wargame for a bit.”

Winninger continued:

In the spirit of that, at the same time we are releasing Shadow of the Dragon Queen, which is the role-playing experience, we are releasing this battle game. [It] allows you to play out sort of massive military battles in the world of Krynn. But one of the interesting things about that game is that it has a lot of narrative elements, just like a role-playing game. It’s a board game, but you’re asked to narrate what’s happening and whatnot. If you choose, while you’re playing the role-playing campaign when major sort of battles break out in the story you can break out the board game and start playing the board game. Your characters from the RPG import into the board game. You keep playing your characters in the board game, and you can learn what amazing, incredible, heroic things they do in these battles. But that experience is entirely optional.

The tabletop role-playing game is completely optional. Winninger will also be added to the board game, as the campaign book includes rules for solving the same battles. Vice versa, players can pick up the board game without diving into the larger role-playing experience. But this is the first time that Wizards is directly integrating its 5th edition TTRPG products and its board game products in this very specific way.

Why are Baker and Daviau such great designers? Well, both have had a lot of experience working in the genre of wargames. For example, they share great design credits for the Risk franchise. Baker, on the other hand, is the designer behind Battle Masters, a sprawling tabletop wargame using 28 mm miniatures and a massive plastic playmat. Daviau is, of course, the inventor of the Legacy System. This system creates new board games every time they are played.

But, Daviau also co-founded Restoration Games. This company specializes in the resurrecting of older games and giving them new lives. Expect him to go back to the original source material to bring forward as much of that excellent TSR design work as possible.

But, why didn’t Hasbro simply assign its hobby board game division, Avalon Hill with this project?

“Avalon Hill was in-house with Wizards of the Coast […] until very recently,” said Winninger. However, the studio has created its own design and production department outside of Wizards. That team has been busy bringing the reboot of HeroQuest to life, and on a spiritual successor to the original Risk Legacy. That left Wizards in need of some outside help.

“Avalon Hill and Hasbro were not really involved in the creation of the board game,” Winninger continued. “We in the D&D studio oversaw the creation of it, but that said the designers of the board game Rob Daviau and Stephen Baker are very well-known board game designers, [they] have worked on a lot of games for Hasbro — most recently, [Return to Dark Tower] was one of their efforts.”

Both Shadow of the Dragon Queen and the Warriors of Krynn board game represent a “whole new story” Winninger said. Also, the events portrayed in both products do take place around the same time as the original Dragonlance novels, a beloved and best-selling series by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis. He added that Tracy Hickman and Laura, who created Dragonlance, were not directly involved with any products.

A new series of novels by Tracy Hickman & Weis is out in August. It will continue the Dragonlance timeline into future.

M1 iPad Pro turns one, but patience for pro experience hits zero

M1 iPad Pro turns one, but patience for pro experience hits zero

A year ago, Tim Cook went Totally Spies on the “Spring Loaded” keynote to add the M1 chip to the iPad Pro. Twelve months later, iPadOS 15 is coming to the end of its life-cycle and the company just introduced a brand new iPad Air with the M1 processor, but the question remains: what’s holding Apple back to make its software follow its hardware?

We wrote several stories over this past year about the M1 iPad Pro, iPadOS’ lack of Pro apps, and even some concepts of what Apple could do to improve its iPad operating system. As of now, unfortunately, nothing has changed.

Don’t get me wrong, the M1 iPad Pro is a magnificent piece of hardware. iPadOS 15, I must say, also improves the iPad experience: Universal Control, new multitasking view, and a more powerful Files app surely make iPad users happier, but it’s still not enough.

A few years ago, I bought my first iPad Pro – the second-generation 12. 9-inch model – and it was around the time the company released iOS 11, and the famous What’s a computer? ad. The iPad Pro was a revolutionary device with endless possibilities. I even spent the entire year of 2019 using this machine as my main computer.

But when I switched to the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro a year later, I haven’t found a reason to return to the iPad as my go-to computer to work. I mean, I’m currently back with the second-generation iPad Pro while I wait for the M1 Pro MacBook Pro to arrive next week, but it’s just for me to discover that little has changed over these years and iPadOS is still bad for those committed to work on Apple’s Pro tablet.

The 12. 9-inch iPad Pro needs more!

pados

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman wrote last weekend that Apple should add a “Pro” mode with iPadOS 16, designer Parker Ortolani went on a similar direction with his concepts, and I truly think Apple should take advantage of a larger screen to add specific features.

For example, it’s weird to open a 13-inch Messages app on the iPad Pro. If Split View could evolve to windows, I believe it would make more sense to arrange the Messages app on a corner of the screen while using Safari to write an article.

I know most of you iPad defenders will say the tablet is capable of multitasking and then putting two apps side by side, Netflix in PiP, and Slide Over stack of apps but just take a deep breath and look at your screen. Is that possible? It’s not possible, I think.

I know that I am a bit behind with the Magic Keyboard accessory because I still use the Smart Keyboard but the overall experience is not much better. It consumes a lot of energy, it makes the iPad Pro chunky, but hey, at least you can say you got another USB-C port. Don’t even get me started on proper external monitor support.

Wrap up

You’re tired of listening to that every now and then, but, once again, we’ll have to wait for iPadOS 16 to see if Apple will finally unleash the iPad Pro’s potential. By adding the M1 processor to the iPad Air, I think the company is just making a mess of a product lineup that has become pricier and doesn’t hold the benefits when comparing to an M1 Mac.

I’m sure the M1 iPad Pro is amazing for those designers who like to edit photos on the go with a full 5G connection, but developers, journalists, students, and so many other people are still trying to understand how and why an iPad could be better than a Mac for everyday tasks, especially when the iPad ecosystem becomes pricier and heavier than owning a Mac.

What do you think would make Apple improve your iPad experience? Please leave your comments below.

Halo Infinite season 2 getting King of the Hill, Land Grab, and Last Spartan Standing game modes

Halo Infinite season 2 getting King of the Hill, Land Grab, and Last Spartan Standing game modes

With less than two weeks before the launch of “Lone Wolves,” the second multiplayer season of Halo Infinite, 343 Industries has released a second preview video detailing three new game modes — King of the Hill, Land Grab, and Last Spartan Standing — as well as additional variants due to release on May 3.

Halo Infinite Season 2 will feature the return of King of The Hill, a long-time favorite game mode of Halo multiplayer, albeit now with a slight new variation. “A neutral hill spawns on the map and two teams battle it out to control the hill and earn points,” 343 Industries community writer Alex Wakeford wrote in a new blog post. “When a player enters the hill uncontested, it is captured and begins earning 1 point per second into a capture bar. When a team’s capture bar is full, they score 1 point and a new hill spawns somewhere else on the map.”

Wakeford added that in Land Grab, “At the start of the match, there are 3 neutral zones around the map. When a player captures a zone, it is locked and gives their team 1 point. When all zones are captured, there is an intermission before 3 new neutral zones spawn. The first team to score 11 points wins.”

The third mode this season is Last Spartan Standing. It’s an entirely new mode that revolves around the season’s “Lone Wolves” theme. This mode’s basically HaloInfinite ‘s solution to Battle Royale multiplayer. “In this free-for-all experience, 12 players spawn on Big Team Battle maps with a confined loadout and 5 respawns,” Wakeford wrote. Wakeford wrote that if a player has exhausted their respawn points and is unable to participate in the match, they have two options: spectate or withdraw from it. A player who gets a match win can get an upgrade to another weapon, something that players of “EscalationSlayer” will be very familiar with. The match ends when there is just one Spartan left standing.”

Both King of the Hill and Last Spartan Standing will be available on day one of Halo Infinite Season 2, while Land Grab is set to be featured a month after launch as part of the Fracture: Entrenched event and will remain available throughout the rest of the season afterwards.

The new multiplayer modes look exciting, and combined with the addition of two new multiplayer maps, “Lone Wolves” looks like it’s shaping up to be a fun way to lure back Halo Infinite players who may have dropped off the game after the conclusion of Season 1.

Apple’s M2 chip nears as Samsung beats LG as processor packaging partner

Apple’s M2 chip nears as Samsung beats LG as processor packaging partner

Samsung Electro-Mechanics is collaborating with Apple on creating the M2 chip, beating out LG Innotek. Samsung is developing the flip chip ball grid array (FC-BGA) for the new generation of Apple Silicon for 2022.

According to ET News, Samsung previously supplied FC-BGA parts for the M1 chip that was released in November 2020. The M1 is the first system on a chip (SoC) designed by Apple for Macs. The chip is currently on the 13-inch MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, 12.9-inch and 11-inch iPad Pro, fifth-generation iPad Air, Mac Mini and the 24-inch iMac.

Apple started developing the M2 immediately after introducing M1. It is developing at least nine Mac PCs equipped with the M2, the successor to the M1. It is expected that Apple will introduce the M2 processor in the first half of the year.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman stated in his Power On newsletter earlier this year that Apple is planning an array of new Macs for 2022. This includes multiple Macs featuring the new M2 chip. It’s possible we will see some of these new Macs announced at the upcoming WWDC event in June. First up is likely to be a redesigned MacBook Air.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics participated in the Apple M2 development project because it received high scores from supplying the high-spec substrates for the M1 series. There is a handful of companies that can reliably supply FC-BGA to Apple. Despite Taiwan and Japan investing trillions in FC-BGA, Apple has a small number of companies, such as Japan’s Ibiden and Taiwan’s Unimicron, that supply FC-BGA. Unlike other substrates, FC-BGA requires an advanced technology that makes it difficult to enter the FC-BGA business.

While LG Innotek also supplies FC-BGA, it will not take part in the development of the M2 chip.

Call of Duty: Warzone getting Godzilla and King Kong crossover in May

Call of Duty: Warzone getting Godzilla and King Kong crossover in May

While leaks pointed at this over the past few months, Activision announced that Godzilla and King Kong were heading to Call of Duty . It’s a cross with Godzilla vs. Kong ,, which is a little unusual, considering that the movie was first released more than a year ago. However, the trailer has enough high-end CG for it to be easy to forget.

We don’t yet know how Operation Monarch will be implemented. We may be seeing a parallel storyline than the movie’s trailer, with the beasts fighting each other. This suggests we might see the film as a continuation of the original plot, and not a free for all that only happens to include the characters.

In a world overrun by Fortnite and Minecraft, crossovers might not be what they once were, but given Activision’s tendency to stray from Call of Duty’s grounded roots, it seems like there’s a lot of potential for something that feels as much like the movie as it does the game.

According to the trailer, “the battle begins” on May 11.

Women in tech report shows that Apple’s leadership is now ahead of the curve

Women in tech report shows that Apple’s leadership is now ahead of the curve

A new women in tech report shows that Apple is now ahead of the curve when it comes to its leadership roles.

For a long time, Apple was accused of having a “‘male, pale, and stale” leadership – another way of saying “older white men” …

Background

Apple in recent years has made more concerted efforts to address its lack of diversity. The motivation for this isn’t just about fairness – starting to redress imbalances – but also because research shows that having a workforce that reflects the broader population makes sound financial sense.

Companies in the top quartile for gender or racial and ethnic diversity are more likely to have financial returns above their national industry medians. Companies in the bottom quartile in these dimensions are statistically less likely to achieve above-average returns. And diversity is probably a competitive differentiator that shifts market share toward more diverse companies over time.

That includes financial gains thorough having women in leadership roles.

Deloitte women in tech report

Management consultancy Deloitte has published a new report that shows that when it comes to female representation, tech giants are making progress – and the fastest growth was women in leadership roles. The company compared 2019 stats with 2022 projections based on company diversity reports.

While the overall growth in women in the workplace was 6.9%, the growth within leadership roles was 19.5%.

The average for the top 20 tech companies is 25.3% female leadership, while Apple’s current leadership page of its most senior execs shows five out of 18 are women, which is 27.8%. This includes environmental lead Lisa Jackson, pictured above. Apple’s board of directors has three women out of nine members, equating to 33%.

More broadly, Apple’s latest diversity report, published last month, shows that the company is also ahead of the pack when it comes to its workforce as a whole.

The diversity report shows that in 2014, Apple’s workforce was made up of 70% males and 30% females. Since then, the numbers have ticked a bit, with 65.2% male employees and 34.8% female employees in 2021.

The data also shows Apple’s leadership saw an 87% increase in female employees across the world. Overall, its female workforce increased 89%. The company is also increasing its female staff working in R&D, with 34% of its [broader] leadership roles fulfilled by women.

Apple hired more Black and Hispanic/Latinx employees than ever before in 2021. A combined 25% of Apple’s leadership roles in the US were filled by Black and Hispanic/Latinx candidates last year. Additionally, a combined 41% filled Retail leadership roles last year.

D&D Direct reveals Dungeons & Dragons’ take on Day of the Dead

D&D Direct reveals Dungeons & Dragons’ take on Day of the Dead

Wizards of the Coast announced a variety of new adventures to Journeys through the Radiant Citadel Dungeons and Dragons’ brand new, adventure-packed anthology only featuring the work of persons of color during Thursday’s D&D Direct stream. Designers and project co-leads Ajit George and Wesley Schneider introduced players to three of those adventures, which include a vibrant Dungeons & Dragons take on Mexico’s Day of the Dead.

George and Schneider teased “Wages of Vice,” a fifth-level adventure that features “gorgeous pastels” and is “evocative of the Caribbean and its people.” They also teased “Orchids of the Invisible Mountain,” a 14th-level adventure that was described as plane-spanning, from the mystery and majesty of the Feywild to the realm of madness known as the Far Realm. In “Orchids of the Invisible Mountain,” players will face a brand-new monster, The Whistler, described as a Far Realm entity “that’s going to horrify your parties.”

Finally, there’s “The Fiend of Hollow Mind,” a 4th-level adventure. There, players will experience the Night of the Remembered, a festival where “the departed and the dead come back to celebrate with their loved ones in this raucous party of skeletons and spirits.”

These three adventures are part of the “Salted Legacy” starter adventure, which was inspired from the first-generation American experience. “Written in Blood” is described as “an homage to the Black experience in Southern United States .”

Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel will bring 13 new adventures and 16 new locations to players when it launches in stores and online starting June 21. The anthology will cost $49. 99, and will be available in digital formats, including on Roll20, on Fantasy Grounds, and through the D&D Beyond toolset.

TIDAL is the latest music streaming service to add Siri integration, here’s how it works

TIDAL is the latest music streaming service to add Siri integration, here’s how it works

TIDAL finally announced the long-awaited Siri integration. Starting now, subscribers to the music streaming service can ask Apple’s personal assistant to play songs, playlists, albums, and more on the platform. Here’s what you need to know about this update.

According to the company’s Twitter account, ”TIDAL meets Siri.” In addition, the music streaming service also replied to a few users complaining over the past months about the lack of integration with Apple’s personal assistant.

In these last months, TIDAL has also integrated another important feature for Apple Watch users by bringing offline playback on Apple’s smartwatch. On the other hand, the music streaming service still lacks integration with the HomePod and HomePod mini.

As of now, apart from Apple Music, only Deezer and Pandora offer true integration with the HomePod. Unfortunately, Spotify and TIDAL still have to integrate its service to Apple’s speakers.

Ever since Apple released iOS 14.5 last year, it’s possible to use a default music streaming service to play your favorite songs. With TIDAL finally offering Siri integration, this became easier than ever. Just follow the steps below:

  1. Make sure you’re running iOS 14.5 or later on your iPhone or iPad;
  2. Ask Siri to play an artist/song/album;
  3. Look for a new pop-up to choose which service you’d like to use;
  4. Tap Yes to allow Siri to access data to TIDAL (or another app);
  5. Your music should start playing.

What do you think about this integration with Siri? Which feature are you still waiting to see TIDAL adding? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Stunning Devialet Butterfly speaker concept comes with an elegant design and dual-firing audio chambers

Stunning Devialet Butterfly speaker concept comes with an elegant design and dual-firing audio chambers

A successor to the Phantom, this fan-made concept takes Devialet’s unique design language to new heights.

I’ll be honest, it’s been nearly a decade since Devialet unveiled the Phantom and it’s still the most beautiful speaker out there (it also still remains on my bucket list, even with its $2k price tag). However, seems like the Phantom has some competition, at least in the looks department) from the Devialet Butterfly, a fan-made concept from the mind of Carota Design. The butterfly boasts of a design that seems like a beautiful intersection between nature-inspired design and luxury design. The speaker has a soft triangular side profile, and sports audio chambers on each side. The Butterfly, just like the Phantom has the famous speaker grille at the front. It also mounts to the Devialet tripod, for an (literally) superior sonic experience.

Designer: Carota Design

A visual exercise in recreating Devialet’s product language, Carota’s Butterfly speaker is all about looking elegant. With the same CMF options as Devialet’s other speakers and a combination of white and chrome, the speaker is also designed around Devialet’s product language. The Butterfly speaker by Carota is all about elegance.

Unlike the Phantom, however, the Butterfly is a delicately designed speaker that can only be mounted on a tripod. The Butterfly cannot be placed on a tabletop because it lacks a flat base. However, the tripod’s slim legs help to create the appearance of a delicate butterfly. Carota Design made the Butterfly in leather and red finishes. I would love to see it in black.

New D&D Starter Set is called Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, priced $19.99

New D&D Starter Set is called Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, priced $19.99

Fans finally have more details about the newest starter set for D&D. Titled Dungeons & Dragons: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. Wizards of the Coast provided scant details on Thursday, during the D&D Direct streaming presentation. The title and pricing were originally unveiled by parent company Hasbro in February.

Note that when that product was unveiled by Hasbro is was listed with an incorrect price. While the press release is still live, Polygon has confirmed that the new boxed product will be priced at $19.99.

Images show that it comes with an introductory rulebook, an adventure book for Dungeon Masters, a set of blue plastic dice, and some pre-generated character sheets. But it’s the pricing that’s most confusing here.

The original 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set came with pretty much the same amount of stuff. It was released in 2014 and has a list price of $19.99. It’s currently going for just $13.29 on Amazon. Meanwhile, the excellent Dungeons & Dragons Essentials Kit is exactly that — essential for getting started with the game — with rules for sidekicks, a double-sided paper map, dice, and 81 cards for tracking magic items, conditions, and more. When that launched in September of 2019 it was priced at $24.99. You can find it now on Amazon for just $19.92.

Update: Polygon has updated our story to reflect the new — and correct — pricing on the boxed set.
