Apple iPhone SE (2022) in for review

Now, in its third generation of iPhone SE (2022), it keeps the same formula: familiar, quick with long-term support, and affordable (for an iPhone). It’s a winning product for Apple, so why change it.

The iPhone SE (2022) comes in a simple box with the phone emblazoned on the front (the imprint is the same size and color as the phone inside, which is a nice touch), a SIM tool, and a USB-C to Lightning cable.

This iPhone is Apple’s most affordable, though it costs a little more than the predecessor. The difference is $29 at their base configuration in the US, and a harder to swallow EUR40 pricier than the iPhone SE (2020) was in Europe. But even that’s a lot cheaper than the base iPhone 13 mini, which starts at $699/EUR809.

If you’re looking at an iPhone purchase on the cheap then the iPhone SE (2022) is the entry-level choice for you, and it’s better than before.

The iPhone SE (2022) has the same display, body, and camera hardware, but it gets the Apple A15 Bionic chip from the iPhone 13, which opens the door for better camera performance (though no night mode), and software support for many years – something many buyers will be banking on.

We cannot understate how important Touch ID is. It is a proven and trusted biometric unlocking method. The physical home button can also be used to access the homescreen from anywhere – something that many senior citizens rely on.

A huge update to the iPhone SE (2022) is the battery. It’s bigger by 200mAh and that, Apple claims, gives it two more hours of battery runtime. We’ll be testing it in more detail as part of our complete review. However, there is no doubt that this will perform better than the one before.

Using the phone is a familiar experience. iOS works well despite its small size. We haven’t experienced any hiccups, which isn’t something we can say about some of Android’s entry-level phones (yes, yes, price difference and all that, but still).

Motorola Frontier leaks with Samsung 200MP sensor

Motorola Frontier leaks with Samsung 200MP sensor

Motorola’s rumored 2022 flagship Android phone is expected to bring a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chipset alongside Samsung’s 200MP ISOCELL HP1 sensor and we just got our first live look at the alleged device thanks to a Chinese tipster.

The upcoming Motorola Frontier houses a huge camera island on its back with a massive cutout for the 200MP main sensor. The accompanying text on the side confirms this is in fact the 200MP HP1 sensor with OIS and a f/2. 2 aperture. According to details provided by Samsung, the 200MP sensor can function as several different sensors thanks to the deep learning-based remosaicing algorithm.

Samsung HP1 can do 2×2 pixel binning, which results in 50 MP resolution with an effective pixel size of 1. 28 um. There’s also a 4×4 binning mode with 16 sensor pixels used to create one big image pixel with the equivalent of 12. 5MP resolution and 2. 56um pixels. It can shoot up to 8K video at 30 fps with the field of view shrinking as little as possible.

Motorola Frontier is also rumored to bring a curved 6. 67-inch pOLED with a 144Hz refresh rate and a 60MP selfie cam. Elsewhere we get confirmation of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chipset which will be paired with 8/12GB RAM and 128/256GB storage. Speculations suggest a 4,500 mAh battery with 125W wired charging and wireless charging which will vary between 30W and 50W speeds. Motorola Frontier is rumored to launch in July.

New iPad Pro to come with Apple M2 chip in fall 2022

New iPad Pro to come with Apple M2 chip in fall 2022

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has released a newsletter, giving us more details about the next iPad Pro.

According to him, the tablet will have an Apple M2 chip when it arrives in Fall 2022. It will also support MagSafe, making it the first Apple tablet that charges wirelessly.

New iPad Pro to come with Apple M2 chip in fall 2022, will also support MagSafe

The new M2 chip will have the same octa-core CPU architecture as the M1 predecessor but will have better speed and efficiency because it will be built on the 4 nm TSMC process. It could have 9-core and 10-core GPU versions, up from 7-core and 8-core graphics in the current M1 chip.

Apple usually needs between 13 and 16 months to launch the new Pro series of its iPads. Quick math reveals that the new tablets will arrive around August 2022, since the current iPad Pro 11 and iPad Pro 12. 9 were introduced in April 2021.

Realme 9 4G mentioned on company site, tipped to have 108MP camera

Realme 9 4G mentioned on company site, tipped to have 108MP camera

The Realme 9 series kicked off with the 9i, a 4G only mid-ranger. After that came two Pro models (both with 5G), then the Realme 9 5G and 9 5G Speed. Several leaks indicate that this will be followed by with second 4G model, though one more capable than the 9i.

First off, the Realme 9 (4G) temporarily appeared in the list of devices on a realme.com support page. That has now been scrubbed, but not before it caught the eye of leakster Yogesh Brar and MySmartPrice.

Realme 9 (4G) appears in list on the company’s official site

Besides confirming the phone’s existence, Brar also revealed that the phone may have a 108 MP main camera. This could make it one of the more capable shooters in the 9-series. The current leader is the Realme 9 Pro+ with a 50 MP sensor (1/1. 56″, 1.0 um) and OIS.

Additionally, the Realme 9 (RMX3521) will reportedly offer a 16 MP selfie camera, which is on par with the rest of the series. Previous leaks suggest that the phone will arrive with two memory configurations (6/128 GB and 8/128 GB) and three colorways (Sunburst Gold, Meteor Black and Stargaze White).

We don’t know what chipset will be at the heart of the 4G phone (the 9i has a Snapdragon 680), but unconfirmed info suggests that it will be powered by a 5,000 mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging. This will match the Realme 9i and 9 5G battery setups.

Speaking of those two, the Realme 9 5G costs Rs15,000 in India and we expect to see the 4G model around the same price (the less capable 9i is Rs13,000).

The Xiaomi Mi 11 may also be throttling certain apps

The Xiaomi Mi 11 may also be throttling certain apps

Performance throttling based on app name may be more prevalent than we know – John Poole (co-founder of Primate Labs, maker of Geekbench) discovered that the Xiaomi Mi 11 scores noticeably lower with a tweaked version of the benchmark.

The tweak is simple, it just disguises Geekbench as Fortnite. Similar results were obtained when Geekbench was disguised as Genshin Impression , and other titles.

The results show 30% lower single-core CPU performance and 16% lower multi-core performance. It looks like that Cortex-X1 based core is having trouble with under sustained load (either with heat or battery drain).

The Mi 11 came out on January 1 of last year, making over a year old at this point. It’s not clear if the phone was doing this from the get-go or if this is a change brought in with one of the updates since launch.

Also unknown right now is whether the Mi 11 Pro, Mi 11 Ultra and Mi 11i/Mi 11X Pro exhibit the same behavior (they are also powered by the Snapdragon 888). Our own benchmarks show nearly identical single-core performance for the 11, 11i and 11 Ultra, so it’s possible. These are all different phones, with different cooling options, so Primate Labs will have to look into it.

Recently, Samsung got in hot water for gaming the results in a similar way on the Galaxy S22 series. Samsung apologized, and began rolling out an update to allow users to turn off the throttle.

Streaming movies win big at Oscars, CODA on Apple TV+ becomes the first to win Best Picture

Streaming movies win big at Oscars, CODA on Apple TV+ becomes the first to win Best Picture

The Academy has traditionally looked down on streaming movies, but that changed yesterday – CODA won the Oscar for Best Motion Picture. Although the film was only shown in theaters, it is now available on Apple TV+.

Writer/director Sian Heder also picked up a statuette for Best Adapted Screenplay (CODA is based on the French La Famille Belier). Troy Kotsur won the Best Supporting Actor award, the first deaf male actor to win an Oscar (Kotsur previously won a BAFTA award and several other awards for his role in the film).

Netflix has been trying to win Best Picture for years now and came quite close with Roma in 2019. In fact, this year’s The Power of the Dog was considered a favorite to win. Dog was nominated in several categories and Jane Campion did win Best Director (only the third woman to receive this award). Even though that was a historic moment, it was also Netflix’s only win yesterday, despite a record 27 nominations (12 of which for Dog alone).

Netflix also had Don’t Look Up in the running for Best Picture, Best Actor nominations for Benedict Cumberbatch (Dog) and Adrew Garfield (tick, tick… BOOM! ), Best Actress for Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter), no less than four nominations for Best Supporting Actor/Actress and others. Best Director is the only one it won, however.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, which was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, won six awards – Cinematography, Film Editing, Visual Effects, Music (Original Score), Sound and Production Design. King Richard was also released on Max the same day as in theaters and won Will Smith his first ever Oscar (for Lead Actor).

Fitbit purchased by Google in 2019,. It took regulators two years to approve the purchase. According to the latest rumor, Fitbit has not yet embraced Wear OS even though it was completed. It says three new devices are coming, and none of them will come with Google’s wearable platform.

According to 9to5Google, Fitbit Versa 4 and Fitbit Sense 2 smartwatches, as well as the Fitbit Luxe 2 band, are on their way with the brand’s own interface.
